Jets continue to harp on Hines Ward

Hines Ward, Mike Tomlin

Earlier this week, it appeared that the Jets had realized that it made no sense to rile up the Steelers, who are 8-1 in their last nine postseason games and who have shown up consistently in big games since losing the AFC Championship to the Patriots six years ago to cap Ben Roethlisberger’s rookie season.

But whether it’s strategic or because they simply and truly can’t help themselves, chatter has emerged late in the week, and it centers on receiver Hines Ward and his reputation for hitting a guy in the jaw when the rest of his face is turned.

On Thursday, it was defensive coordinator Mike Pettine.  Our guys I think called him the toughest guy in the league when nobody’s looking,” Pettine said, per Ian Begley of ESPNNewYork.com.

On Friday, it was cornerback Antonio “Cee Lo” Cromartie, who told Adam Schein and Chris Carlin of SNY’s Loudmouths, “I know for a fact that he will hit you while you’re not looking.  I don’t think he’s man enough to hit you while you’re looking at him.”

Also on Friday, Jets safety James Ihedigbo got involved.  “We’re going to deal with him early so he knows what type of game it’s going to be, and that none of that stuff is being tolerated,” Ihedigbo said, per Begley.

Safety Eric Smith stopped short of saying what would happen if Ward lays a guy out with a no-look block.

“If I finish what I said and then do what I planned on doing, I’m going to get fined,” Smith said, who knows a thing or two (or 50,000 things or two) about being fined.

“We saw some of those plays, like in the Ravens game, he’s out there hitting Dawan Landry in the back, he came across and hit Ray Lewis in the back,” Smith said. “Ed Reed was 30 yards downfield and he’s going down and hitting him.  It’s just unnecessary things like that that make you mad as a defender.”

Given that coach Rex Ryan doesn’t seem to have a problem with Ward’s tactics (“[H]e plays hard and he plays to the whistle. . . . I respect the heck out of Hines Ward.”), we’ve got a feeling that the monster Rex has created by talking and talking and talking some more can’t easily be contained, even in those rare weeks when Rex finds a way to zip it.

Actually, I kind of like the trash talk-it is entertaining and reminds me of the smack-talking that takes place in professional wrestling. The Jets talk trash better than a lot of teams-the NFL needs more hype like this prior to games. Goddell is no fun when it comes to things like celebrations and smack talk.

  5. green41563 says: Jan 22, 2011 10:16 AM

Rex doesn’t tell the players to talk, and he doesn’t tell them to shut up.

He lets every man be himself, and that’s why half the league wants to play for him.

The Jets are just trying to divert attention away from all the holding they do.

You hear that Hines… they’re saying they don’t respect you. Say you can’t play.

    Time to get nasty!

If your not looking shame on you, need to be playing Pop Warner. Defensive backs don’t like to be hit by receivers especially the JETS DB”s they don’t even like to tackle just watch CROMARTIE. Better worry about more that Hines, he has taught the younger receivers well. Wallace, Sanders and Brown will hit you just a hard so you keep looking for Hines

  13. Stiller43 says: Jan 22, 2011 10:25 AM

It’s cute, guys on defense try their best to create highlight reel big hits, often doing more than they have to to actually make the play, and yet they whine and complain when someone on offense wants to do the same to them.

  14. andyprough says: Jan 22, 2011 10:32 AM

According to the newspapers, the Jets are so scared of Hines, the coaches put together a special video of his hard hits to warn their defenders.

Better pee your pants now, Jets, while its warm. If you wet your britches out of fear on Sunday night, they are going to freeze to your legs in the 5 degree weather

(Bart Scott is such a baby for generating all this talk, just because he’s scared of getting laid out by Ward again – way to go Rex, you signed the weakest of the Baltimore LB’s to build your defense around, LOL)

(I’m still trying to think of which Jets receiver James Harrison and James Farrior are afraid of getting hit by, LOL!!!)

  15. ncoolong says: Jan 22, 2011 10:34 AM

All this may be new to the Jets, but it’s ancient to Ward and the Steelers. Nothing makes Hines smile more than defensive backs paying attention to what he’s doing when he doesn’t have the ball.

They all hate him because Ward gets in their heads. He doesn’t need the ball to make an impact. If Smith is more concerned with Ward, Wallace will get behind him.

  16. nflfollower says: Jan 22, 2011 10:40 AM

Hines Ward is one of the dirtiest players in the NFL, that’s a fact. I like the title “toughest guy in the league when you’re not looking”. The fact is if he played defense in the current NFL atmosphere he would be getting fined continually. It annoys me so much when an offensive player uses the league’s bias to his advantage and gets away with things defensive players couldn’t dream of. And then has that stupid laugh / smile after being a cheap coward. I hate the Jets, so I was planning on rooting for the Steelers, but Hines Ward makes it difficult.

As a side note, it’s pretty humorous that Antonio “I won’t hit you whether you’re looking or not” Cromartie is saying Hines Ward is afraid to hit somebody if they are looking.

  17. Bubby Brister says: Jan 22, 2011 10:45 AM

Huh. It’s been a while since one of these stories came out. You’d think a team with so many ties to the Ravens would realize that people who call out Hines before games is like 0 for freaking 17 since he came into the league. I have not once seen a player make the “we’re gonna get you, Hines” proclamation and then back it up.

I have, however, seen Earl Little leave the game on a stretcher after making one.

Just when I started getting worried about this game… thanks, Jest, for getting me right back into it.

  18. Spoonthis says: Jan 22, 2011 10:47 AM

  20. bischof12 says: Jan 22, 2011 10:52 AM

Hines Ward isn’t Wes Welker, the Steelers aren’t the Patriots. Hines will pop you in the jaw Cromartie and he’ll smile while he does it. Should be a great game on Sunday even though I hate both teams.

  21. mackie66 says: Jan 22, 2011 10:56 AM

Its obvious who in this blog has played the game and who hasnt. Its NOT illegal to blindside someone above the waste, not leading with the helmit. Its done in every game. If someone is getting ready to tackle ure ball carrier, say, on a punt return, your not going to block him to prevent the tackle, even if that player is not looking ? Are u kidding me ? If a blocker doesnt get his block then that blocker wont have a job long. These Jets players are simply trying to put a dought in Wards head, they know its not illegal . I cant wait to watch Ward pile drive Cromartie or any jet DB.. Its call football people, get a life.

The NFL is becoming a very odd league … they penalize guys for end zone celebrations but let teams like the Jets run their mouths on a daily basis.

The only talking cromartie should be doing is with his financial planner. Doesn’t this guy have like 7 kids with 7 different women living in 7 different states? On Hard Knocks he could barely name them all. Three years after he’s out of the league he’s going to be flat broke and living in his car.

Hines is great! I can’t think of another WR ever that good that can pull off the intimidation factor. A WR that scares the Def. and a Safety is their best player- Polumalu, pretty unique. I think this game will come down to turnovers. Gonna be some hitting out there Sunday. Should be fun!

  36. gatorprof says: Jan 22, 2011 11:53 AM

Bart Scott still has nightmares about this hit…

    Perfectly legitimate, hard nosed football.

I get a kick out of all these defensive secondary guys complaining about cheap hits when they are the ones drilling receivers constantly. Hines Ward is a beast and they had better keep their head on a swivel.

  37. paulieorkid says: Jan 22, 2011 11:57 AM

It’s EASY for the uninformed to cast Hines Ward with an overly broad brush. The Jets comment that “Ward is the toughest guy in the league when nobody is looking” may be appealing to the ignorant.

    However, here is the reality.

Hines hits every player at every position. It’s usually DBs since that is who is squared off with. I’ve seen Hines drill noseguards and defensive ends too — cleaned Gerard Warren off Ben’s back 5 yards downfield when Warren was a Cleveland Brown. And of course, Hines lights into the LBs: everyone knows about the Keith Rivers killshot but there have been so many others, … including Bart Scott.

Hines is a hitter. He’ll hit you crackback. He’ll hit you face up. He’ll attempt to deliver punishment. And if he can’t deliver a killshot – he’ll clean off a defender with a lunging hit. Been watching Hinesy every snap he’s ever played. Either way, he’ll send a message and he gets in guys’ heads. Ward is a FOOTBALL PLAYER.

And why shouldn’t he dishing out the love? Receivers are nearly always “blind-sided” with big hits when they’re not looking. I guess it’s okay if the wideouts, tight ends and backs get lit up while focusing on catching a pass. Quarterbacks also regularly get drilled from the blindside — it’s a dream shot for a defender to light up the QB when he doesn’t see it coming.

But somehow Hines is a bad guy in these hypocrites’ minds for not rolling over and pretending he’s the wide receiver version of Jeff “Head on a Swivel” George.

Defenders with a manic reaction over Hines Ward’s play would LOVE him on their own team … as the Steeler defenders and coaches (and fans) do. And their problems with Ward are so hypocritical that it blows my mind.

As for the Jets dictating to Ward what will and won’t be tolerated, good luck with that. The Jets evidently have no idea what they’re dealing with.

  38. laxer37 says: Jan 22, 2011 12:05 PM

Hines is in their heads – just how he likes it.

He’s a veteran with two rings and is a lock for the Hall of Fame. You don’t think he knows guys are out there looking for a knockout shot on him every week?

It’s hard for these clowns with no championships to stay focused.

    @heydude2300 …

You’re happy the Jets sound like “professional” wrestlers? Dude, if I want clowns, I’ll go to the circus.

It’s Ward’s job to block and the defenders’ job to keep track of him so he can’t blindside them. Those big talkers don’t have any problem blindsiding defenseless receivers. Their problem is finding one that hits back. I couldn’t have scripted a better person for the Jets to whine about this week. Whining is like Wheaties to Ward!

And personally, I don’t think they will be able to back it, and cash the check their mouths are writing. The Steelers will win this game because they are the better team. They have a better defense, and by far a better QB. That is why a team will win, not because of what a player says.

They would have been better off keeping quiet this week. They have to play the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, at Heinz Field, not some other panzy team. How dumb can the Jets be?

Could the Jets be a little intimidated by the Steelers?

Seems to me that the Jets, with their recent comments, betray a certain trepidation of the intimidation the Steelers employ in their physical style of play.

In Hines Ward, and the Steelers in general, they meet a team unlike Bolts, Colts, and Patriots who are more finess passing teams. The Steelers are smash mouth in your face who don’t get intimidated, but rather fueled, by talk.

This is the reason why the Jets have said very little except complain about Ward’s “cheap shots.” Notwithstanding their earlier win against a shorthanded Pitt team, deep down the Jets are not so confident.

Another stupid, stupid comment. How is it that a 325 lb. DL can blindside a QB and its a great hit and a 190 lb. WR can’t make a clean hit just because some LB is not paying attention?

First two rules starting at Pop Warner:

    1) Play until the whistle goes.

    2) Keep your head up.

Obviously a few armchair QBs mouthing off about the immutable rules of football.

And as far as the Ravens (the second most classless team in the league) go: Reed was holding onto Ward’s mask for dear life when Ward caught him head on last week. That was no blind side hit. Reed looked like he filled up his thong after he got hit.

Go back to sleep. The draft will be here soon.

There sure are a lot of Hines Ward haters here! I don’t like the Steelers, but I’ve admired this guy for the longest time. It’s something about how he’ll run a route up the middle and get plastered to the turf as he catches the ball. He’s the first guy up and he helps up the guy who hit him most of the time. I don’t know what he says, but he has a smile, then he’ll pat the guy on the back as he runs back to the huddle. He loves the game so much, and big hits are a big part of that – both ways. He’ll congratulate people when they hit him hard!

And defender that wants to gripe about his play needs to look at their own play. The loudest complainers – Terrel Suggs,Ray Lewis, Eric Smith, etc. – those are some of the nastiest hitters on defense in the game. Could it be they play defense because they don’t want to get hit, and because they like to hit? Stop complaining so much, and learn to watch what’s going on around you. Really, what professional football player doesn’t see Ward coming? Defenses like the Ravens and Steelers explain why they hit receivers hard: so they second guess plays, knowing that if they go for the ball they will get hurt. What is wrong with a WR with the same philosophy? The rules certainly don’t suggest there is a problem with it…

Oh boy, it’s Zigg again — that bitter guy who didn’t pay attention in school.

    Pay attention to this.

Your claims of “dirty” fall on deaf ears. Harrison is an NFL defensive MVP who may win it again this year – whose game-turning interception in XLI may be the greatest Super Bowl play in history.

Ward is an NFL Hall of Famer and Super Bowl MVP.

Kemoeatu is admittedly a bit on the over-aggressive side.

Porter was known as a lightning rod, a leader and prominent from a vocal standpoint. Porter was not known as a dirty player.

And Kimo had a lonnnng career, some of it with Cincy. You’re a fool if you think Kimo is dirty based on one play over a career as long as his.

In short, your claims that the Steelers are “dirty” are easily debunked.

    Moving on.

Anyone sensible who has intelligently looked at the facts would not classify Ben as a “sexual predator.”

Holmes, a dynamic performer by any measure, was essentially given away because of his transgressions.

Jeff Reed’s issues with booze put him on a very short leash in Pittsburgh, and he was outright cut this year.

Bam Morris did have problems with Mary Jane, and his act too was not tolerated in Pittsburgh.

As for steroids and the 70’s Steelers, not one single defensive player on the Steel Curtain was ever linked to ‘roids nor were any skill players. Webster was suspected of steroid by some, but only Steve Courson was confirmed to have used steroids. Courson was a 5th round pick in ’78 and thus, had nothing to do with Steeler success prior to ’78, and Courson’s contributions in ’78 and ’79 were far from responsible for the two pieces of Steeler hardware.

Someone had to burst all your bubbles. And I was happy to do it.

Try to make today less miserable than the rest of the days of your life you’ve lived. You’ll be a better man (boy) for it.
