Jets to fans: Get the champagne on ice

Rex Ryan, Bill Callahan,

The Jets did their best to hold their tongue all week.   With only one day left before Sunday’s AFC Championship, they can’t help but let their confidence show.

We are gonna win,” guard Matt Slauson told Steve Serby of the New York Post Saturday morning as the team began boarding buses for the airport.  “I believe we are a better team.”

So what is so much better about the Jets?

“I feel like we have a better offensive line,” Slauson said. “We have a better running game. As far as our passing game, we have a lot more playmakers. We can spread the ball out more. Our defenses are really similar, blitzing a lot, a lot of really good players on either side, but I would give the edge to our guys because of our ability to penetrate and push the pocket with all of our really strong guys.”

Receiver Jerricho Cotchery allowed himself to imagine wearing the AFC Championship t-shirt and hat.  Tight end Dustin Keller says the mood at 9:30 p.m ET Sunday will be all high fives and looking towards the Super Bowl.  Safety James Ihedigbo said much of the same:

“Stock the refrigerator full of champagne and get ready to celebrate,” he told Jets fans.

It’s good to see the 2010 Jets team we know well finally make an appearance this week.

LOL well the Jets were the only team this season that is trying to win the Super Bowl so it makes sense they plan on going there to win.

    What are they to say?

Slauson: “Well we stink, no chance really…I don’t even know why I’m making the trip LOLz!”

The Jets offensive line may be better than the Steelers, but the Jets offensive line isn’t blocking the Steelers offensive line.

Does he remember his team’s paltry 276 yards last time? They’re gonna have to do better than that with Polamalu on the field.

  5. blackglass3 says: Jan 22, 2011 12:05 PM

I remeber when the Patriots were the most hated team in America. Thanks for taking that burden away, Jets.

Please, Steelers. Send these guys golfing.

If you say a lie enough, eventually you start believing it yourself. Steelers, bring this sham of a team back to reality, please.

All they do is dig themselves there own grave with running there mouth’s early like this, there not the only team feeling disrespected now!………..GIVING FEUL FOR TO STEERLERS IS NOT SMART

What would be worse on the senses? N Korea exploding a nuke over my house, or the loudmouth Jets actually winning the whole shebang? I prefer the nuke as it is quick and you won’t know what hit you. I’m rooting for the Pack, but if Chicago wins that game I’ll root for them. Hate the Steelers but the hate for the Jets resides at a much higher plateau. It is ingrained on my DNA. Please lord, get that nuke airborne!

If this team loses even the SuperBowl it will be one of the biggest laughing stocks of all time. They talk and have nothing to back it up, whens the last time the Jets won anything?

  12. steviesteeler says: Jan 22, 2011 12:13 PM

They sure do a lot of trash talking for a bunch of players that never really won anything…

  13. drgfri says: Jan 22, 2011 12:13 PM

  14. tdl8 says: Jan 22, 2011 12:14 PM

Stupidity and trash talk doesn’t win games! It just makes the other team mad!
Why is Cotchery saying anything anyway? If the Jokes do win it will have NOTHING to do with him!

I do wish playoff games could end in a tie though because I don’t want to see either one of these worthless teams in the Super Bowl! We have either the trash talking foot lovers or the dirty hitting… Well we all know what Little Ben is!

If the jets win the NFL needs to market an afc champion commemorative toe ring.

  17. drescon says: Jan 22, 2011 12:16 PM

As much as I dislike the Steelers, it does no one any good to underestimate them. Big Ben is not like Tom Brady. If the Jets cover all their recievers, he’ll simply buy time for his recievers. Mike Vick is the best running quaterback in the league but no one scrambles to find the open reciever better than Big Ben. This should be fun.

  18. tbd3 says: Jan 22, 2011 12:19 PM

They’re pretty high on themselves — as they should be — but if they lose, it is only going to be more painful.

  20. stixzidinia says: Jan 22, 2011 12:23 PM

Unfortunately for them, weapons won’t matter. Sanchez is still the guy throwing the ball. Steelers win big. Pats thought they had the game in the bag last week too. Jets are going to be humiliated tomorrow.

  21. steelerzzzrule says: Jan 22, 2011 12:23 PM

  26. gjshihadeh says: Jan 22, 2011 12:28 PM

Considering the Steelers score more PPG and allow fewer PPG, I don’t see how these comments are relevant…

  27. marinofreakout says: Jan 22, 2011 12:30 PM

hahhahaha cant wait for the end of yet another season of jets showboating without a single trophy to back it up

no afc east trophy, no afc champ trophy, and no superbowl—and you know regardless of not walking away with one trophy they will run their mouths more than any other team next season.

  28. swinbun says: Jan 22, 2011 12:30 PM

They are just like the Ravens. All talk. But what do you expect, when you have a baffoon like Ryan leading your team.

They are not going to be able to run the ball, so eventually Sanchez is going to chuck one up. The Steelers defense is going to put up too much pressure for him to survice the game without some big mistakes.

So let them run their mouths all they want…..its all going to come back to them…..then Rex will have plenty of time to shoot some more feet videos.

The Jets should be confident and they should be visualizing success. They just don’t need to share their private visualizations with the media. But that’s the personality of this team, and it’s worked for them so far.

And coincidentally, feeling they’re perceived as underdogs works well for the Steelers :)

The Steelers have been mum and confident all week. What makes you think they’re in their heads? If anything, I think the Steelers are in the Jets heads. They made it a priority this week to keep their mouths shut and they cracked. Yeah… they clearly are the ones with the strong states of mind right now.

Sanchez is allegedly a guy with plenty of poise and great feet. However, I don’t think the Jets’ offensive line will give him enough time in the pocket. Sanchez’s footwork becomes erratic with pressure in his face and will often overthrow his receivers. This game should be a defensive struggle, not a footrace. Sanchez better be on his toes because the Steelers are coming after him with no mercy.

    Steelers win 20-10.

freakin steelers dont even believe we belong here

how are you guys getting disrespected?

one out of every 15 announcers is picking the Jets to win.

We beat the colts, the Pats, and been to the title game two year in a row…how have we not accomplished anything..

i hope the Jets do beat the steelers soundly, so then we dont have to hear everyone say the Jets got lucky, they cant do anything, over rated, steelers lost it the jets didnt win it….blah blah blah,…

Stick a fork in them, they are done.

Not sure how many hockey fans are on the boards but I grew up a Red Wings fan. In 94-95 they made it to the cup finals and were heavy favorites to win against the Devils. The few days leading up to the cup finals there were reports coming out in the media of how the Wings were skating around at practice pretending to hoist the cup, shooting their mouths off about how they would win, etc, etc, etc. They went out and were swept 4 games to 0 by the Devils. All it did was motivate the Devils to stomp them. Now the Jets have been lucky so far running their mouths but it will catch up to them and hopefully that is tomorrow.

  46. joerevs300 says: Jan 22, 2011 1:08 PM

    One out of every 15?

Come on Jets fans. At least try to tell the truth…

CBSSports: 2 of 5 (Not counting Bill Cowher picking the Jets to win)
    ESPN: 2 of 7
Generally speaking…the Steelers are around 55-60% to win.

    So that’s 5.5-6 out of 10.

Will I respect the Jets the same way should the do the same? NO!

Baltimore’s offense was so horrible that punting was considered to be a good thing. the Jets have 1 of the best OLine’s in the game, an HOF RB, 2 adequate WR’s and a QB that the media loves as though he would be the Christ himself.

ALL this Jets team will be remembered for after Tomorrow is it’s a good thing words aren’t currency or they’d be arrested for throwing around play money

The steelers have allowed 8 td in their last 8 games on defense and that includes the 3 they allowed last week. The jets went 13 quarters without a td this season.

This game is will not be as great as some people hope it will. Unlike the colts and pats, the steelers can run the ball and play defense as well.

Nice season jets. Steelers win 27 10

Besides all the talk, the matchup between the Jets defense and Big Ben really intrigues me. They shown that they can stop pocket passers like #18 and #12 but #7 is miles ahead of those two when it comes to improvisation. Having said that, #7 can also be reckless with the football due to his ‘confidence’ in his ability to ‘make big plays’.

Can the Jets defense stay patient enough to stop #7 ?

Jets have a decent team, no doubt, and are playing well right now. Steelers seem to just be going about their business getting ready for this game, while Jet’s can’t seem to shut up for one week.

However, Jets aren’t playing the soft Colts or the overrated and Brady-dependent Pats. They are playing the league’s best defense on their home field. No way the Jets will be able to run the ball like they do against other teams. With the way the Steelers’ defense is playing, I would be surprised to see the Jets get much offense. Ben isn’t immobile like Brady and Manning. Ben will extend the plays as he always does, while possible taking a few sacks but creating 3-4 monster plays. Further, Sanchez isn’t half the QB Ben is. Also, while the Jets have some good WRs, don’t discount the Steelers including their younger WRs in Sanders and Brown.

It should be a great game. IMHO Steelers have the better overall defense, and the better QB. They can’t afford special teams blunders like the KO TD return they gave the Jets the last time. Frankly, I would consider kicking off out of bounds and let the defense stop them from there.

Yeah, Sanchez was arrested for rape in college, Ben was accused … and so were 7 Packer players this past off-season. The great-nephew of Bears founder George Halas pled guilty in ’06 in relation to a charge of sexual misconduct with a 15-year-old.

Omigoodness … you can’t root for anybody!

Or … you could stop being an idiot and stick to football. Ben, Sanchez, and the 7 Packers were falsely accused. I am not a fan of trash talking. But whatever works. The Steelers are a very very good team and the Jets will need to play their best to beat them.

But the trash talking does a couple of good things. One it helps the Jets believe they can win and second it helps the TV ratings. I a game where everything is scripted and everyone is told to the say the right thing. The Jets and Ryan are a breath of fresh air. What they say may not always smart but its honest. I would love to see the players zip their mouth and let Ryan do the bragging. Ryan is usually a lot smarter and more entertaining.

The Jets are on the edge of accomplishing two great things. If they beat the Steelers they will have beaten the AFC SB representative of 8 of the 9 last years in the Colts, Pats and Steelers. I don’t think anyone has ever made the SB with a harder playoff schedule. Second the Jets can go from being an irrelevant team the last 40 years to one of the NFL’s marquee franchises. Not necessarily because of their play but because of their style.

But to get there they actually have to win something and that means beating the Steelers. I have suffered as a Jets fan for 40+ years and I don’t see us beating Pittsburgh. Big Ben is to good when it counts.

But I will say this regardless of who wins I admire the Steelers a great deal. I just love the way the play football with honor and respect. I love Pittsburgh’s non trash talk keep quiet style. Hard nosed, physical, defense orientated, run the ball football. I even love the Steeler fans as they seem much more knowledgeable than the modern day ADHD type fans we see spamming message boards. If I could make my team (the Jets) emulate any team it would be Pittsburgh. Absent the trash talking they mostly have. Unfortunately we do not have Big Ben.

Do you know what a jet fan is?

Someone who could not get Giants tickets

Do you know why the jets wear green?

They are green with envy wishing they could be the Giants.

At jet games they take food stamps at the food stands

Jets fans are so damn loyal they had to give refunds and lower ticket prices this year after having what they now call a great season last year.

And of course there owner is such a dick his mama named him woody johnson sounds more like a porn star then one of the richest men in the country

My only wish would be that the jets would have moved out to LI where they belong where they could have really been the home town fav instead of being in the shadow of the NY Giants

Everybody who rips the jets for talking trash must never have played a sport in their life. Everybody talks trash. Look at other teams in the NFL. Do they talk as much as the jets no but who cares. Everybody just hates the jets because they are actually winning and are still playing. People who hate the steelers hate them because they have won 7 super bowls. I hate the pats and tom brady because they are good and tough to beat and are a thorn in the jets ass. (we got them this time). Everybody rips Floro because he made this incredible site and does a great job at it and they couldn’t even get close creating something similar. So how about you stop ripping the jets and just enjoy a great match up on Sunday. If you dont like trash talking go back to your Madden video game because obviously that is the only competitive thing you have ever done.

  90. phillysteve says: Jan 22, 2011 3:50 PM

These comments by the Jets remind me of another Pittsburgh sports team rival who had somehow gotten too full of themselves.

In 1990, the Minnesota North Stars made it to the NHL finals and somehow won the first game against a Pittsburgh Penguins team that was loaded with great hockey stars. After that first game, the press reported that North Stars players began talking about a victory parade and going to the White House to meet President George H.W. Bush.

How did that turn out? Well, the Pens then literally blew the North Stars clean off the rink in the next four games straight.
    …………………………………………………………………….

In addition, it’s all-too-apparent that that future Hall of Famer Hines Ward’s hard-nosed style of play is already affecting the Jets’ psyche right now, and Ward hasn’t even said anything.

PFT visitors love to hate on the Jets. Many of the comments are hysterical, since they’re being made by fans of teams who are thinking about the draft, or who their next OC or DC will be.

Honestly, the Steelers fans confidence reminds me of the Patriots fans posts just a week ago. No one thought the Jets stood a chance last Sunday, right? And how did that work out?? The Steelers are a great team, but this isn’t going to be a cake walk, Pittsburgh fans.

    May the better team win!!

  105. wtf__seriously says: Jan 22, 2011 6:20 PM

Oh, by the way, there was a FAN RALLY going on when the Jets boarded the buses for the airport this morning. So, in the presence of thousands of their fans at their training facility, were they going to say anything else BUT “get the champagne ready”???
They aren’t talking trash. They are responding to all the fans who came out to wish them well. And their local media….The New York Post.

  106. Pooped says: Jan 22, 2011 6:34 PM

“Jets have already succeeded in getting between the Steelers ears,

Pats did so for a few consecutive contests several years ago.”

The Pats would never engage in trash until after the games, and I think that was smart because the Steelers would initiate it (I think I recall it being typical Joey Porter stuff) and they would give the whole “we punched the bully in the mouth” statements after the game. It was effective in my mind, and I say that as a Steelers fan.

It’s the Jets who have the bully mentality right now because of that porker coach and Bart “Hulkamaniac” Scott’s idiocy, so let’s see where that takes it.

I think overall the Steelers are a better team but their weaknesses can be exposed by a smart coach. I just hope they switch up their signals as much as possible and use a lot of wrinkles on both sides of the ball because Ryan seems to be either stealing signals or he’s guessing right on almost every play because of something he’s seeing pre-snap. He’s either a huge cheat or a football genius.

Can you imagine the bean counters w the NFL if the SB came down to an intrastate match up of Pittsburg & Philadelphia? It will never happen. Too much money involved to let that happen.

The same would apply to 2 “blue collar” teams like the Bears & Steelers. The east coast media center won’t let it happen. Again, too much money involved.

The NY Jets will be there to insure “national interest” to the advertisers.

  126. steeelfann says: Jan 23, 2011 8:58 AM

    Everyone is forgetting this tidbit:

If Jim Caldwell does not call a stupid timeout, Jets are likely kicking a 50-51 yard field goal to win it with a shaky kicker. If Folk misses, Colts might be here.

Basically Jets would have lost to totally injured Colts team missing Collie, Dallas Clark and a slew of offensive linemen and db’s.

I say, “keep talking Jets”, almost starting to hear a touch of doubt now. Sounds a little different than before Pats game. Keep talking.

It’s easy to talk trash when you are beating up on poodles (Colts defense) and cheaters with out their video tapes (Patriots). It’s a whole different story when you take on the pitbulls (Steelers defense) of the league and a QB who plays his best games in the biggest spots. Thats not Brady who hangs his head and sulks when things are not going his way, or Manning who does the same thing and throws picks (last years Superbowl) when the chips are down. That’s Big Ben who makes shoe string tackles backing up in open space (AFC Championship against Colts) that Brady or Manning couldn’t make on their best days. And leads Superbowl GAME WINNING drives with one of the best GAME WINNING throws in Superbowl history. Did the J-E-T-S Jets, Jets, Jets, Jets really think thet could win that game? NO, thats why they shut their mouths before the game… too late they had allready made fools of themselves. Then they showed their true colors, 50 yards of offense first half and the defense got run over. See ya next year Jets.

The AFC championship was the next week when Big Ben and company went into Denver (13-3 that year) and did the same thing to Denver that they did to the jets (rolled up 24 points in the first half and that was the end of that). That was the game were Roethlisberger pump faked ( the best pump fake in the league) Champ Bailey out of his jock and threw another touchdown strike in a big spot.
