News that the Broncos have hired a defensive coordinator has reminded us that the Chiefs have yet to hire an offensive coordinator.
Two weeks after Charlie Weis escaped left for the same position at Florida, the Chiefs have no replacement.
And there’s no real buzz about what the Chiefs will do. Bill Callahan’s name apparently has emerged as a potential candidate, based on the photo teasing an article that’s trapped behind a wall that we won’t pay to scale.
The smart move, in our view, would have been to hire former Broncos coach Josh McDaniels, who helped make quarterback Matt Cassel sufficiently attractive in 2008 to become the Chiefs’ starter. But McDaniels never interviewed in Kansas City.
It’s unclear whether the Chiefs offered McDaniels an opportunity to sit for the job. Our guess is that coach Todd Haley wants no part of a former head coach who, if things go off the rails in 2011 or 2012, easily could become the interim head coach. Also, it would be a safe wager that McDaniels, if offered the chance to interview, would have uttered a three-word response consistent of the words “no” and “way”.
The buzz continues to be that Haley is tough to work with. Moreover, the thinking is that he wants a coordinator over whom Haley can lord.
It remains to be seen whether Kermit can get out of his contract.
