Tomlinson not guaranteed to be back in New York

LaDainian Tomlinson, Gary Guyton

Like every team, the Jets have more free agents with uncertain futures than usual this offseason.

Gang Green also has a few big names under contract that may not be back.   Jason Taylor is generally expected to retire, and it’s possible the Jets won’t bring LaDainian Tomlinson back.  Both the Newark Star-Ledger and the New York Daily News write Tuesday that Tomlinson is no lock to return.

A divorce would not be Tomlinson’s choosing.  He said Monday that he hopes to be back in 2011 to earn the remaining $2.425 million on his contract.

Tomlinson had a nice year for the Jets overall, but the team could be concerned with his 3.5 yards-per-carry average in November-January.  It’s possible the team thinks they could do better with fresh legs.

Maybe even they could go for older legs; Ricky Williams has made his interest in the Jets known.

why would they want to bring this guy back? once again he was nowhere to be found in the biggest game of the year.

Would love to see LDT back….he doesn’t have to be the lead ball carrier next year, he can play change of pace to Greene

  4. xpensivewinos says: Jan 25, 2011 9:58 AM

Pretty funny if he ended up in New England….

  5. richm2256 says: Jan 25, 2011 10:00 AM

In the single biggest yard of his career, Tomlinson couldn’t get the job done.

Get that yard, score the TD, and it’s “Super Bowl, baby!!!!”

Couldn’t get the most important yard of his career. Chew on THAT this off-season, Ladanian. This one is all on YOU. This couldn’t have happened to a better person.

New England fans will remember THAT, almost as much as him sitting on the bench sulking while Rivers refused to pull a “Cutler”.

they should def bring him back! he played really well against the pats just last week.

They should def feature shonn greene more, tho.

  7. nxsteven says: Jan 25, 2011 10:20 AM

With TRich retiring it frees up an extra spot in the backfield. I’d feel good about Greene, LT, McKnight, and Connor in the backfield.

Greene 1st/2nd down, LT 3rd down, McKnight for fresh legs in the 4th quarter, Connor is our FB who looks great.

Also helps that they would combined for less than $6m/yr.

  8. themage78 says: Jan 25, 2011 10:22 AM

How is it on LT to run on 4th and 1 up the gut and get one yard against a great run stopping defense? Most RBs in that situation couldn’t do that.
I still think the Jets were stupid to let Faneca go, should’ve kept him because their run game and pass blocking has looked suspect since last season.
And how can you fault LT for being beat up in Nov-Jan?They kept running him in garbage time when some games were already won. Toss the 3rd string RB in at that point.

Why would they want to bring him back. Funny how quickly you guys forget. Tomlinson had a really good year and him and greene are perfect compliments to eachother. You say he was nowhere to be found but if you watched football you would know alot of rbs are nowhere to be found against the pitt d. So please just shut the hell up you hater. Go worry about whatever crappy team it is that you cheer for and stop worrying about what the jets do!!

    =======================

Dont be a dufus. Get that yard, and its still a 7 point Steeler lead, getting the ball back on a kickoff rather than at their own 1/2 yard line. Ain’t no Jets Super Bowl either way, probably.

What New England fans should remember is the Steelers are going to their 3rd Super Bowl since the Patriots last showed up big in a big game.

  13. ny82jy says: Jan 25, 2011 10:31 AM

Tomlinson had two really good playoff games against the colts and pats too. So dont make it like he did nothing in the playoffs cause thats BS!!
In the Colts game he rushed 16 times for 82yds for 2tds and 4 catches for 17yds.
In the Pats game he rushed 10 times for 43 yds and had two catches, 1 for a td which was a big one.
He didnt have a great game vs pitt but pitt is really good at stopping the run. So say what you want he is very valuable to the jets. You haters are just to stuipid to see it i guess

Typical band wagon Marsha Brady fan comment. Real NE fans could care less what LT does or doesn’t do! It has nothing to do with them when they aren’t on the same field! It wasn’t NE’s defense that stopped him from getting that yard! NE’s D would have given up the TD on the 1st play! Real fans aren’t still talking about a game from 5 years ago! Especially since NE didn’t win the Super Bowl that year either!

L.T. sign the one day and retire with class IF you dont get picked up by the JETS again next yr! Sucks you left S.D. for Jersey, but it will be even worse if you start the tour around the NFL playin for every team trying to relive the ol days. BTW has the ink on the JETS tatoo dried yet, might be able to start modifying it if he hurries!!!!

  25. realitypolice says: Jan 25, 2011 11:23 AM

It comes down to production per dollar spent. When everyone proclaims how “great” LDT was this year, they are saying that in comparison to expectations.

His numbers this year were decent. He was 28th in YPA, 21st in rushing yards.

And before everyone rushes to attack me, I fully understand he didn’t carry the full load in NY.

Which is my point. You can probably get LDT’s production from a much younger player making significantly less money.

He’ll be 32 next year, and has a history of injuries, this year notwithstanding.

Sorry, folks, this is a business. If LDT is back in New York next year, it will only be because he took a salary cut.

  26. mike32303 says: Jan 25, 2011 11:25 AM

All you people that wanna defend LT go ahead. But once again in the AFC championship game he was nowhere to be found. And dont give me that Pitt run defense crap. The jets have a great run defense as well and Mendenhall owned the jets all game long. And for those who wanna say NE couldnt stop that 4th and 1.. please you have no idea what would have happened. LT disappears when it counts the most and has no sense of leadership. He is a crybaby who will have all these stats and no ring which is what he really wants. All you people come on here and say all this stupid stuff about Brady is a girl and this and that. Well let me tell you something.. Id take Brady’s credentials over most..

Id certainly hate to be remembered as the guy who was the “greatest QB never to win a superbowl” like Marino… Screw that i wanna be the QB with rings and one who’s a great leader like Big Ben. Im not kissing Steeler ass I hate them.. But i respect them because they care about winning and do it the right way. They, like the pats, find players that play their brand of football and its clearly working. Not only that, they have a coach that they believe in like Belichick. They rarely talk trash and play sick defense.

All you jets fans talk trash about winning a divisional playoff game.. Who cares. You didnt win your division or even the conference. You accomplished nothing this year. You haven’t won in over 40 years and are the 5th losingest franchise.. Keep your mouths shut until you hold that Lombardi trophy up. And for those saying Brady is on the downside of his career.. look at his numbers this year and shut ur mouths .. idiots

  27. monnymon says: Jan 25, 2011 11:39 AM

Wow… To the genius’s that are saying ” Why would they want to even have LT back?”
Well as a die hard Jet fan I believe bringing LT back is a MUST. This guy might be the most level headed guy in the NFL, and on a team like the Jets with all of the talented knuckleheads they have, thats just what they need.
And to the post about where was he vs the steelers?
Hm… I dont know, maybe he had a similar game like much of the other running backs vs the number 1 rush defense.
Call me crazy but I also remember LT having a touchdown in this game? Also, shotteinheimers coaching helped no running back out on the Jets this week.

  28. sc2115 says: Jan 25, 2011 11:48 AM

How is LT poison? How did he hurt the Jets this year? Explain that to me, genius? What did he do to poison the Jets locker room?

I love the ‘no heart’ thing. Dude has played 10 years at running back in the NFL, and has missed only 5 games in that span. No heart? Give me a freaking break you loser.

The NFL will be better without one of its best players of all time? How does that make any sense?

  29. sc2115 says: Jan 25, 2011 11:50 AM

Amen. Amen times ten. Show me a running back that could have pushed through that mass of humanity. It was a terrible play call no matter who the back was, and is was the 4th bad play call in a row on that drive.

Sorry pal, but any time you get to the championship game you have had a pretty good year. Did the Jets win a championship? No, and it’ll sting for a while. New England was 14-2 with a chance to host the Steelers (a team that they OWN) to go to another Super Bowl. The Pats got SPANKED by the NYJ in their own building. So suck on that all offseason.

  33. patriotinvasion says: Jan 25, 2011 12:28 PM

    @andyprough

While I can’t disagree with your comment, keep in mind that the Steelers defense (the key to your success) has been in its prime over the past 6 years that you’ve been going to Super Bowls.

The Patriots defense was in it’s prime from 2001-2005 when we beat you in not one but TWO AFC Championship Games IN Pittsburgh. So it’s just the ups and downs of NFL rebuilding due to age, free agency, etc.

  34. goawayeverybody says: Jan 25, 2011 12:30 PM

If LT doesn’t re-sign with the Jets, I hope he goes to New Orleans. I would like him to finally win a ring.

  35. goawayeverybody says: Jan 25, 2011 12:35 PM

I love all the delusional people who are saying LT didn’t show up in the playoffs. Ahem, the entire Jets running game didn’t show up in the first half of that Pittsburgh game, including Shonn Greene.

And, um, did ya happen to catch LT scoring TWO touchdowns against the Colts? Or scoring on that phenomenal grab against the Patriots?

  36. dasmol says: Jan 25, 2011 12:51 PM

Hate on, haters. I told you a year ago that LT would take the starting job at RB for the Jets. He’s still got plenty in the tank. I agree that if the Jets don’t bring him back, it was because he wouldn’t take a cut.

LT is one of the greatest to ever play the game. Period.

  37. jagerbolt says: Jan 25, 2011 12:55 PM

Someone beat me to it, but unless he takes a pay cut then he’s likely gone.

He still has some flashes of greatness but I doubt they will want to pay him that much if they have so many FAs to try and sign this year.

If I remember correctly, even when LT was in his prime with SD, they didn’t use him in goal line situations deep in the red-zone and it used to frustrate him.

Now he’s in his twilight and Marty’s boy runs that play with him as the ball-carrier … that didn’t make much sense having him attempt to run thru that brick wall between the tackles.

All you sobbing JETS fans pointing the finger everywhere for this loss, but you were fortunate to even be a participant in that game. Thanks to a stupid time-out taken by Jim Caldwell you would have been one & done after the COLTS game.

Yes, moron, the Steelers still would have had a seven point lead. Add the difference of five points between the missed TD and the safety to the final score of 24 – 19, and you’ve got a tied score, moron. Figure in a two point conversion and the Yets go to Dallas instead of the Steelers.

Ask Rex Ryan or Tomlinson himself if those lost points would have changed the final outcome.
