Zack Follett: I’m glad we have Matt Stafford instead of Jay Cutler

Danieal Manning, Zack Follett, Isaiah Ekejiuba

Lions linebacker Zack Follett gave a radio interview in which he called Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford “a china doll.” Then he gave another radio interview in which he walked back those comments.

Oh, and he threw in another shot at Jay Cutler.

I’m glad we have Matt Stafford instead of the Bears’ quarterback because [Stafford] goes out there and plays with separated shoulders and wins games,” Follett said.

Follett added that his “china doll” comment was meant to suggest that Stafford has had bad luck with injuries in the first two seasons of his NFL career, not that he’s not tough.

“It wasn’t a knock on him,” Follett said. “He’s just had some bad luck early in his career, but if he gets healthy I compare him to Dan Marino in terms of his arm strength and accuracy.”

Follett insists that he has great confidence in Stafford as a teammate.

“I have no doubt that he can play a full season,” Follett said. “I don’t want it to be confused as ‘he’s a china doll, he breaks.’ He can take a hit.”

UPDATE: Follett has posted a rambling video in which he blames Satan for today’s controversy.

  2. jimmysee says: Jan 25, 2011 6:35 PM

I mean — the Bears with Cutler won the division — the Lions with Stafford on IR (practically from the get-go) finished dead last.

Follett’s quote is about the silliest thing I have heard all day.

  3. snoiLtiorteD says: Jan 25, 2011 6:36 PM

Z speaks the truth. He just posted a FB video explaining himself and how his words were twisted. He also spoke to Matt, and they are on fine terms. Hopefully, he can continue to rehab and be back next year to blow some people up on the field. Dude’s the man

  4. pudgalvin says: Jan 25, 2011 6:38 PM

The Lions did play very well in the playoffs this year.

  5. bigfog says: Jan 25, 2011 6:41 PM

Again, who’s this Zack Follett you speak of?

  6. dragones99 says: Jan 25, 2011 6:41 PM

Hmmm really, Mathew Stafford, hurt two season in a row, and did absolutely nothing for your team, other then take your money, while he lays in bed in his rich house. Jay Cutler he took his team to the Championship, lets see when Stafford does that.
ohh wait he wont, because he will get hurt again next season, and the next and the next. and retire at 30 for breaking every bone in his body

  7. dbellina says: Jan 25, 2011 6:42 PM

Your update made this post 100x more awesome.

  8. echoplex89 says: Jan 25, 2011 6:46 PM

wow, a special teams specialist now thinks he has a clue about playing QB.

cutler and the bears destroyed him over the past 2 years.

  9. db105 says: Jan 25, 2011 6:47 PM

Wiseman once said ” it’s better to be quiet and thought of as being dumb than speakup and remove all doubt.”

  10. daCoach says: Jan 25, 2011 6:48 PM

Hysterical. This guy might be the dumbest playe in the league.

  11. metalhead65 says: Jan 25, 2011 6:49 PM

when are these “tough” guys going back up what they say? you sad stafford was a china doll end of story. not that he is like one or has bad luck you said he was a china doll. real man don’t change their story because they get flack for saying it. so where were the lions this season while cutler was leading the bears to the division title? you and everybody else playing the tough guy while sitting at home during the playoffs better hope you don’t get hurt and miss any games next year big mouth!

  12. greenbaysucks says: Jan 25, 2011 6:50 PM

    Stafford “wins games”?

This dude should try his hand at stand up comedy.

My question for Zack Follett is does it hurt?

I mean, does it hurt to pull something out of your ass like that while you’re backpedaling so furiously?

  14. jc1958coo says: Jan 25, 2011 6:51 PM

follett probably won’t be in detroit next year!
who is this guy, just another nobody making a comment! win some games loser then talk!!

  15. metalhead65 says: Jan 25, 2011 6:52 PM

oh wait I am sorry zach what I meant to say was I am glad you have stafford instead of cutler as your qb to,otherwise the bears would not have won the division title and played in nfc championship game while stafford and the lions were sitting at home.

  18. kindasporty says: Jan 25, 2011 6:58 PM

As a Lions fan after watching that video all I can say is we need to get that guy back out on the field. He’s flat out crazy and you need guys like that in football.

  19. bobhk says: Jan 25, 2011 6:58 PM

I swear, almost everyone who plays in the NFL is a brainless idiot. Whatever brain cells exist in Follett’s brain are not wired to his mouth.
Why do so many NFL players shoot their mouths and then try to take it back? MJD is another clueless joker.

  20. chrisbinjax says: Jan 25, 2011 7:00 PM

Hey Zack, I’m glad the Bears were 2-0 against the Lions this year..btw, Cutler had 600 yards and a few td’s in his 2 games against the Lions…where was Stafford…oh yeah, that P***y was hurt!!

  21. bearsblitz78 says: Jan 25, 2011 7:01 PM

Zack Who? What team does he play for? Detroit? Yeah, they know what a tough quarterback is. How about the Eric “paper lion” Hipple?

Toughest thing about the Lions is watching thier games.

    Sincerely,

  33. ncoolong says: Jan 25, 2011 7:15 PM

    WTF?

  34. bigbear12 says: Jan 25, 2011 7:15 PM

    Fair enough.
So Satan prefers Stafford over Cutler.

  35. tecmobowl34 says: Jan 25, 2011 7:15 PM

And I’m sure Lions fans (those of them who even know who this guy is) are much happier with their teams’ perennial cellar-dwelling and decades-long playoff drought.

Just when I thought this whole situation couldn’t possibly get any more asinine. This is the equivalent of a player who is losing 40-0 celebrating after making a catch for a first down (something lions fans have seen before).

  36. cd_ridge says: Jan 25, 2011 7:18 PM

Just who is this “Zack Follet” guy you keep posting quotes from?

  37. philtration says: Jan 25, 2011 7:21 PM

I am glad that you have Stafford instead of Cutler too.

  38. againsville says: Jan 25, 2011 7:21 PM

I’m not a bears or Jay Cutler fan, but in all honesty I don’t think anyone would take an UNPROVEN injury prone QB over Jay Cutler. Stafford when healthy has a whopping 19td to 21 int for his career. This potential word is way overated. Personally I’d rather have Shaun Hill over Stafford

  39. bhenryman says: Jan 25, 2011 7:21 PM

zach follet? hmmmm wasnt he on the practice squad and IR most of his sad excuse for an NFL career, he should focus on how to make a tackle instead of talking about relevent players in the NFL.

  40. alpod says: Jan 25, 2011 7:22 PM

    “call me crazy”
this guy is nuts. I wouldn’t be surprised if this video hurt his chances of getting signed again. WOW

  41. tecmobowl34 says: Jan 25, 2011 7:23 PM

I think Zack Follett is actually Ricky from Trailer Park Boys

  42. rockinron2 says: Jan 25, 2011 7:25 PM

I would guess the Bears are happy they have Cutler over Stafford. I know they are happy they have every 5th string practice squad player over Zack Follett.

  43. 4dabears says: Jan 25, 2011 7:26 PM

Zack Follett should probably just shut his piehole at this point. Does he not realize no matter who his QB is he is still a Detroit Lion?

  44. refsburgh says: Jan 25, 2011 7:32 PM

Zack Follett is much more famous for these comments than his play on the field

  45. therolandobottom says: Jan 25, 2011 7:32 PM

What has Stafford played 3 games in two seasons? Yeah, real reliable.

  46. chhutson27 says: Jan 25, 2011 7:36 PM

Stafford gets in there and wins balls games… If I remember correctly, he did do that – once. Pretty gutsy I must say, but the dude is made of glass. And that was against the Cleveland Browns. I’ll take the QB that has missed only one start, and got his team to the NFC Championship. How many games have the Lions won? I know they are getting better, but sheesh – it’s not like they are just 2 or 3 games away from the Bears.

  47. egls7 says: Jan 25, 2011 7:37 PM

Well at least he didn’t blame god

  48. pudgalvin says: Jan 25, 2011 7:41 PM

In all fairness to this guy, I think what he meant is simply that he’s fine with Stafford as his quarterback, china doll or not. It just came off as taking a shot at Cutler.

  49. 7pints says: Jan 25, 2011 7:44 PM

Seriously? A 7th round draft pick that can’t keep his mouth shut? Not the best combination, my man.

  50. greener89 says: Jan 25, 2011 7:46 PM

  60. oxycode30 says: Jan 25, 2011 8:10 PM

I’m glad Cutler is a Bear and think he’s been treated very poorly of late. He’s going to have a lot of incentive next season and that can only be good news for Bears fans and bad news for the opposition. We will be playing in the NFC championship game and beyond next season… you’ll see.

  61. 14fairways says: Jan 25, 2011 8:11 PM

Staffold has 2 wins, 11 losses, and 17 games missed due to injury, and after calling Stafford a China Doll, he says Staffold just “goes out there and plays with separated shoulders and wins games,”

isn’t there some kind of intelligence test required before these guys are allowed to talk to the media – at least, there should be

  62. darthhitman77 says: Jan 25, 2011 8:13 PM

I can’t call him injury prone, ALL 3 of our QB’s were injured behind our OLine. The games he played in this season he won his 1 complete game and when he left the field against Chicago and the jets the Lions were winning BOTH of those games at that point. ALSO, question his durability if you wish Bears fans, but there is no questioning his heart, ya find Cutler’s yet?

  63. ninjapleazee says: Jan 25, 2011 8:19 PM

Zack who? I had to go visit Detroit’s team site to see who the clown was…. oh… not even on the active roster.. nor has a real jersey number…. 7th round special teamer…. you’ll go far in the NFL

  64. whatever897 says: Jan 25, 2011 8:20 PM

Seriously, enough already. You’d think Jay Cutler murdered someone or something. The guy has a bad attitude and CLEARLY has to re-hab his image. But… what exactly did he do wrong? He took the advice of his physicians and stayed out of the game. If he was going to be ineffective anyway – good choice. All this hatred and constant nonsense from irrelevant (and some relevant) players is getting old. They weren’t there, it wasn’t their leg, they have no clue.

The constant posts about this guy lead me to believe that someone at PFT has an axe to grind. He’s a young kid… advise him, don’t slaughter him.

  65. driftw00d says: Jan 25, 2011 8:21 PM

  66. ugadawgdetroitlionsfan says: Jan 25, 2011 8:27 PM

hmmm…..let’s see. Zack, please try and remeber that you are in fact, Zack Follett. Oh, and you might want to save that last paycheck and make it last a looooong time. By the way, what top notch radio station is calling Zack Follett for his opinion on the Jay Cutler affair. Was this year’s Mr. Irrelavent not available?

  67. metalhead65 says: Jan 25, 2011 8:28 PM

dude take your meds and shut up already!

  68. cylondetector says: Jan 25, 2011 8:29 PM

I think Zack Follett needs one of those ‘flaming arrows’ right up his ass.

  69. boneyardbuc says: Jan 25, 2011 8:30 PM

Zack Follett is 23 years old (born in July of 1987).

    Marino retired in 1999.

I wonder how many games he saw Marino play in…

I wouldn’t put too much trust in his Marino/Stafford comparison.

  70. gbfanforever says: Jan 25, 2011 8:42 PM

“He may not be a big star but hes a good guy a regrets what he said today and he is a devoted christian nothing wrong with that.”

Why does it matter what his religious beliefs are when judging a man for his actions? What if he was a devout Jew or Muslim? Jesus famously said “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” Some Christians seem to conveniently have a hard time remembering that one.

  71. lionsuhnami says: Jan 25, 2011 8:42 PM

    ———————-

Sad excuse for a career? Hmm, he was a late 7th round pick. How many late 7th round picks are actually on rosters? Obviously you shouldn’t be talking about players you don’t know about. Zach Follett is a decent tackler he’s just bad a coverage, but this was his first year starting before he got a neck injury. If you don’t think he can tackle go to Youtube and search “Zach Follett-Danny Amendola hit”. I’ve met Follett, he’s actually pretty nice guy.

  76. 85bears4life says: Jan 25, 2011 9:15 PM

Somebody tell him he plays for the Detroit Lions. He’d b lucky to even know what an NFC championship looks like. Stafford threw one 2 yard pass with a separate shoulder against the BROWNS. Really?!? Get in the playoffs…matter of fact play a meaningful game…hell, avoid being mathematically eliminated from the playoffs in OCTOBER!! before you take shots at other teams.

Be careful man you know Bears fans struggle with simplistic thinking. They already struggle to remember the REFS gave them both games this year. All I know both QB’s suck for different reason. Cutler just sucks and Stafford sucks due to injury. The guy can play but injuries don’t help us in the win column.

He wins games? When? Where? At Georgia? What an idiot!!!

  84. lionsfan16 says: Jan 25, 2011 10:18 PM

Well just look at the Bears and you’ll see that 1 play can determine whether you make the play-offs as the 2nd seed or be sitting at home watching it all on TV.

Go back to week 1 and Calvin Johnson’s TD catch that wasn’t, and this isn’t sour grapes just illustrating how much of an impact stupid rules and poor officiating can have on a teams season. Lets assume for now that everything remains the same and the rest of the season goes as planned and the Bears season goes the same except for that 1 play (so put it in a vacuum, and really who’s to say with that play that the Bears aren’t deflated and lose the next few games instead of winning em so don’t complain about this approach).

The Bears go 10-6 instead of 11-5. The Bears are tied with the Packers in the NFC North but lose the tie-breakers to the Packers because instead of 5-1 their 4-2 in the Division (which ties the Packers) but have and 7-5 conference record as opposed to the Packers conference record of 8-4. They would than also be tied with the NY Giants and Tampa Bay Buccaneers who would also have better conference records (and the Giants would also own the H2H tie-breaker) and that would than knock the Bears out of the post-season. So to everyone in week 1 who said this play(call) wouldn’t matter over the course of the full-season would you care to re-think that statement and will you think twice before making that statement again about a single bad call/rule?

  85. uberniner says: Jan 25, 2011 10:38 PM

Cutler is a tough guy who can play.

Anytime da Bears think they want to get rid of him, I say send him to the 49ers. Put him together with Crabtree, Davis, Morgan, Ginn, and Gore, and you will be scoring points.

  86. xstaticonradio says: Jan 25, 2011 10:49 PM

  87. blackfootkiller says: Jan 25, 2011 11:00 PM

  88. bearsblitz78 says: Jan 25, 2011 11:24 PM

Responding to lionssuhnami’s post. Completely hilarious!

The Lions will be lucky to be a wildcard team within the next five seasons with thier new “paper lion” Stafford.

The rest of the NFL, specifically the NFC north will continue to outclass an organization that makes the meaning of the word “organization” an absolute joke. As always.

Former Lion doing something after they left?

Mike Williams is doing pretty decent in Seattle.
Damian Woody is a pretty good Guard for the Jets.
Oh and that Leigh Bodden kid had a hell of a year in 2009 with the Pats.

You’re right he may not make the squad next year…because he had a neck injury.

You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about when it comes to the Lions so why don’t you sit down on your couch with a beer and watch the Super Bowl at home like the rest of us.

Leadership, toughness, heart, arm strength, Stafford has weapons around him as well!! The O line has continuity, the running game is better, the Defense is better, especially the D line. Stafford tells the trainers to screw off and will go in the game if he can stand and his right arm works.

Cutler has proven his toughness!! He has Diabetes, and playing through that is tough in itself. Also, playing QB in a Mike Martz offense means you will take a ton of hits and sacks no matter how good your O line is.

The question is with all the adversity that Cutler went through the whole season, did it effect him mentally down the stretch? I played games in high school with broken fingers, hyper extended elbow, cracked ribs and ankle sprains. I’m not the toughest guy in the world, but I did it for the team. If I could walk or even stand, I wanted to play, as did my team mates.

This was the NFC Championship game!!! If Cutler could walk off the field, he should have walked back on!! That’s what he is paid to do!!

If you want to see toughness, watch this!!

    Who is Zack Follett?!?

It sounds like Follett doesn’t have much going on upstairs being a nobody LB.

1st of all detroit beat the bears the first game, officials gave it to chicago. 2nd cutler has to be the biggest sissy ever to play football. looks like a damn retard. he walked around and rode the exersize bike. every player out there thought he quit. even his own players but they wont say it. stafford seperated his shoulder ,came back and threw the game winning td against cleveland 1 handed. cutler has always been know as a loser to the public and all football players. also the lions finished ahead of minn this year and according to all the reviews are considered the 2nd best team in the north only following gb. some terams get lucky breaks 9like chicago0 and some dont. stafford will be just fine. phill sims was hurt hios 1st 3 years and went on 2 a great carrer. cutler has nothing great about him except a great quitter.

funny how Lions fans chime in and talk trash while their team hasn’t had a winning season since a decade or go.

I don’t know, maybe this is reason why Stafford shouldn’t have played with the injury and maybe he wouldn’t have been out so long in his short NFL career. I mean he has only played in 13 games during 2 years. Cutler has only missed 1 game over the course of his 5 year career and played in the NFC championship game despite the very, very low expectations of the Bears this season.

Added amusement was that after the Sunday night game against the Giants everyone was seemingly unanimous in their opinion about how “tough” Jay Cutler was and is. Oh well, the fickleness of the sports fans and media alike is astounding.

This is just another reason we are drafting a LB with our first rd pick!!! so shut up ZACK. –and quit bible thumping all the time too!!!

Folett??? You serious??? Stafford??? You Serious??

    Detroit 6-10
Sniffing the Cellar again and another top 5 pick.

    Bears 12-6
Played in NFC Championship also Cutler sacked 52 times and was hurt twice..First with a concussion….

Hey Follett keep talk..(isn’t he hurt?) Why is he not sucking it up and playing with an injury..Everybody expects Cutler too……

Ive gone back and forth on this in my head, and ultimately I feel bad for the guy and will give him a pass, if he really is looking at becoming a regular guy like us, you figure he was on top the world, a majority of us were buying into that he could be a dominant player (myself included) and he was getting such publicity from Rome to profootballtalk and everywhere….to just one bad kickoff, his entire life has changed, and he’s looking for answers, most people turn to religion in situations like these…..it was just a poor choice of words, he hadn’t really been relevant since he was injured, and now he’s finally back on the radio, after struggling with dealing with the possible career ending injury, so he might not be in his right state fo mind to be communicating to the media

“Biggest sissy ever” (that’s missed exactly 1.5 games in his 5 year career as a starting QB), but I bet he knows how to use a “Shift” key.

And spell elementary words like “exercise”…

    A few questions:
How does a QB throw “1 handed”, exactly? You mean QBs usually throw the ball with TWO hands?

Butmore importantly, since when has the NFL determined winners and losers with “reviews”? (as in, “according to all the reviews [the Lions are] considered the 2nd best team in the north only following gb”)

Funny, I always thought it was about wins and losses, as determined by final game scores, which are determined by the points a team actually scores.

Well, forget that 11-5 final record, the division title, and the 2nd seed in the playoffs then.

And now that I hear it’s actually “Reviews” that determine a team’s caliber, I’m going to run right out and write up a “review” that says the Bears are the “All-time Master Champions of the Universe Throughout All of Space and Time Forever and Forever,” because that’s what REALLY matters.

By the way, I heard Julius Peppers sent Stafford a get-well card after he shredded him like a paper doll.
If I remember right, after Peppers “seperated” Stafford’s arm from his torso, didn’t it flail around by itself for a while, like when a lizard leaves its tail behind to confuse and distract predators?
