Steelers teammate says Pouncey is out for the Super Bowl

Maurkice Pouncey

Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey didn’t want to talk about his injury on Wednesday, but teammate Chris Kemoeatu did.

“We are definitely sad that he won’t be able to be with us in the Super Bowl,” said Kemoeatu after practice Wednesday via the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.   “Definitely I feel bad for him. We just have to win it for him.”

Wow.  The Steelers are relatively open about injuries, but we wonder if they wanted this news out there already.   We wouldn’t be surprised if coach Mike Tomlin makes the news a little less definitive than Kemoeatu did.

Doug Legursky will fill in for Pouncey at center, and it’s a huge drop-off in talent to him.  The Steeler offensive line has struggled to identify blitzing players all year, and this isn’t going to help.

one guy try 15 like the packers! don’t start whining now, it’s too early! you can do that at the end of the game!! 34-24 packers

Could be counter intelligence trying to mislead the Packers. That kind of stuff wouldn’t happen before a SB would it?

Which is why the Steelers destroyed the #3 Jets defense with the running game AFTER Pouncey went out.

Just keep doubting Legursky – he’s done nothing but prove doubters wrong to start building an excellent career for himself

It’s too bad for the Steelers and Pouncey but as a Packer fan I don’t have too much sympathy as the Pack has made it this far with 15 players on IR.

  15. bobfromcda says: Jan 26, 2011 6:35 PM

Kemoeatu better be careful…might get an earfull from Coach! I don’t think they want that info out yet. That aside, what a bummer.

  16. Stiller43 says: Jan 26, 2011 6:35 PM

No doubt a huge blow. RT Colon tears his achilles in training camp, LT Starks goes down after 8 games, switched starters at RG midway through the season, and now by far our best lineman in Pouncey goes down. No doubt a challenge, but Ben seems to do his thing no matter who’s blocking for him. Biggest difference might be in the running game.

Go Legursky and Let’s go Steelers.

  17. shadowgm1 says: Jan 26, 2011 6:38 PM

Great built in excuse for the morning after the Super Bowl, I’m thinking. A center isn’t what stops the Packers blitz so much as two good tackles…no real help there; or at least a good guard…Oh yeah – Faneca’s a Cardinal now. Never mind.

Just bring your A games next Sunday and it won’t matter who is out, for God’s sake. This will be a great game if Pittsburgh prevents a fast Packers start. If not…

As for some of you other whiny and sore “my team couldn’t hack it to get here last year so I hate Green Bay” or “I hope Harrison rips Rodgers head off”, get a life. Interesting that one of you is pulling for the same team that denied the best Minnesota will ever have to offer almost 40 years ago.

  18. possiblecabbage says: Jan 26, 2011 6:39 PM

Kind of too bad, I wanted to see one of the NFL’s best young Centers (Pouncey) against one of the NFL’s best young Nose Tackles (Raji). Personally, I would have given the edge to Raji but if Pouncey is out I’ll never know.

  19. Manbearpig says: Jan 26, 2011 6:40 PM

Pouncey will play in this game. He’s not missing it. The Steelers are messing with all of you and your buying it!

Until Tomlin says he’s out, he’s in.

  23. Deb says: Jan 26, 2011 7:01 PM

    @jc1958coo …

How do you take Kemo saying “we’ll just have to win it for him” as the Steelers whining? And we had our starting QB suspended for 25 percent of the season and went in with our FOURTH string starting. Plus we’ve been playing with third and fourth string on offensive line. So don’t give me that crap about the Packers being the only people to suffer injuries this year. Honey, it sounds like YOU are the only one here whining! We will be JUST FINE. Jackass.

  24. stairwayto7 says: Jan 26, 2011 7:02 PM

Legursky held his own vs Shaun Ellis and no doubt will doubt he same with some fat kid named Raji, who people outside Green Bay never heard of! Steeelrs will rock the Pack!

  25. rushmatic says: Jan 26, 2011 7:04 PM

Seems to be a lot of talking from Packer fans. Not to stoke the fire, but I hope BJ Raji eats that line for dinner.

They were a well-disciplined, scary-looking defense and that was during a game with Flynn at QB.

GL Squealers. You’re gonna need it.

  26. lombardy7 says: Jan 26, 2011 7:05 PM

  27. burghhc52 says: Jan 26, 2011 7:06 PM

Wasn’t it just last year that all the Packers fans were saying how poor this guy was playing? Now all of a sudden, he has a good year, and he’s the best NT in the league LOL. Listen, the guy is good, he’s a talent, and he’s playing well. But, if any of you Pack fans stuck around to watch the AFC Championship game (and the Jets vs. Pats game the week before) you’d know that DT Kris Jenkins was playing pretty lights out there for a while too. What happened to him in the Steelers game?? The Jets got gashed on the ground, that’s what happened. It’s going to be a stiff test for Legursky, but he stepped up last week. There’s really no reason to think he can’t do it this week.

But the Cheeseheads can keep claiming Raji as god for the next week and a half haha! Damn, I know what it’s like to be a confident fan (trust me), but you Packers fans are a trip!!

  28. villagoo says: Jan 26, 2011 7:07 PM

Ha, let’s take everything Chris Kemo. takes at face value. Since when is this guy on the medical staff, give me a break for acting like this means the guy is out. And the steelers don’t need excuses, as evidenced by the fact that they are in the SB with significant injuries along the O/DLs. Pack would struggle to be a top 5 AFC team.

  29. sleazysnake says: Jan 26, 2011 7:08 PM

Why are all these people calling Pouncey an all pro center? He was not voted to the pro bowl, that would be Nick Mangold and Kevin Mawae. He was not voted to the all pro team, Mangold again.

Where do these Steelers fans get off calling some rookie lineman a pro-bowler.

    He’s a mere rookie.

    Nothing special.

Nothing that will change any of the Packers preparations, thats for sure.

  30. Mitch Rogers says: Jan 26, 2011 7:09 PM

The injury is a tough blow for the Steelers. Tomlin’s motto all season has been “The standard is the standard”. More importantly they know about this two weeks in advance and can adjust the offensive gameplan to compensate. Maybe with roll out passes and sweeps in the running game. The Steelers defense is the heart and soul of this team and is playing historic defense this season. If they play a perfect game on defense, Rodgers and company have no chance no matter who is playing center.

  31. Deb says: Jan 26, 2011 7:11 PM

    @skeletaldrawing …

Really. High ankle sprains have a typical recovery time of 4-6 weeks. But still wish players like Kemo would leave injury reporting to the team. I’m with Belichick on controlling the message … a holdover from my days in corporate communications. It minimizes problems, especially in the media feeding frenzy that surrounds the Super Bowl.

  32. jamson64 says: Jan 26, 2011 7:14 PM

  34. Jack Burton says: Jan 26, 2011 7:18 PM

I agree with andyprough, Legursky has filled in across the entire line and played pretty well. How big an impact was Sean Ellis after Pouncey went out? Give him nearly 2 weeks of taking all the snaps and i’d say he’s gonna have a solid game.

The Steelers don’t bitch and moan when a starter goes down. They plug in the backup, and play football.

With that said, Legursky is giving up a huge size, and strenght advantage against Raji. His technique better be on point.

  43. pghguyy says: Jan 26, 2011 7:41 PM

legersky has filled in at almost every oline position this year and has done it more than well. he may not be pouncey but he is a great lineman, hes has helped this team to get to the superbowl as much as any lineman on this team . a 3x all conference center at marshall hes obviously not a bum.

As a Steelers fan, I am disappointed that Pouncey will not play on Sunday. But I knew this when I saw the replay during the AFC Championship game. I am surprised that his ankle was not broken. Legursky will be fine. The Steelers will adapt and overcome Pouncey’s injury just like they have with all the other injuries to the OL and also like the Packers have overcome their injuries. No excuses, looking forward to a good game.

  49. cup1981 says: Jan 26, 2011 8:18 PM

Legursky is an excellent player, the only reason he is not starting is because of depth issues. He is the only offensive lineman that can play any position on the line, from LT all the way to RT. If the Steelers had more depth at each position, he would easily be starting at LT of RG. However, they need him ready if someone goes down.

It’s just Tomlin playing for injuries, like he did with Batch at the beginning of the year and look how that turned out. Just what he was playing for–both QBs getting injured–happened…

Oh for heaven’s sake. You are looking at last year’s Pro Bowl roster. Kevin Mawae is retired!

It was big news when Pouncey was voted to the Pro Bowl as a rookie center, but he’s not listed on the roster now because the Super Bowl participants have all been replaced. Duh. If you’ll look at the 2011 roster, you’ll see that Jeff Saturday and Alex Mack are the centers, but you’ll see Pouncey listed among the Super Bowl participants that had to be replaced.

  52. hobartbaker says: Jan 26, 2011 8:38 PM

With or without Pouncy (The Great) the Steelers would have and will lose this one. It is not because of the match up with Raji and “Bronco”. I saw all of the playoff games and most of regular season games (T-V).

The Packers are just now coming into their own, and the Steelers are in a decline. Big Ben played College F-B around here and he is the greatest college Q-B I ever saw play. But, the offensive team is not playing up to the G-B squad. the defense is still solid, but I don’t think that will win them a Super Bowl. Sorry Steel City.

If you think Kris Jenkins can compare you’re dreaming.

Legursky is gonna have his hands full regardless. Raji is not blockable with one man. The guy walks the center of any team right into the QB’s lap in about 2 seconds.

Dominated All Pro Mangold when they played the Jets, and every other center he’s played against, you’re back up is merely an appetizer before he engulfs Big Ben.

To the few who say “big deal, the Packers lost 15 to IR.” Are you new to football or what? Centre is alot tougher position to replace than RB, DB, TE etc. Centre to QB exchange is an extremely important thing to have down.

We may see a few high balls because of it in the shotgun formation, hell some fumble while Ben is under centre. This doesn’t even cover how much chemistry they have with the rest of the Line, snap count, blitz pickup, injuries that may come up ingame etc. The Steelers are lucky that the guy is as experienced as he is. Should the Steelers be prepared for this situation? Yes, but don’t assume it isn’t a big deal.

This time around we have Sam Shields, Tramon Williams and others who know what they are doing. As a result, the Pack is the #5 defense in total yards and the #5 defense in passing yards, as well as #2 in the league in INTs.

On offense, the Pack has the #9 offense compared to the Steelers #14 offense.

It’s a very short list, and yet many defensive tackles who were drafted end up to be really good players (at least almost all of the defensive tackles who are really good players were drafted at some point).

Also, and I’m amazied that nobody has mentioned this yet, but Kris Jenkins is on injured reserve and has been since the first week of the season. He didn’t actually play against the Steelers, nor against the Patriots, Dolphins, Bills, Vikings, Broncos, Packers, Lions, Browns, Texans, Bengals, Bears, or Colts. Unlike fans of other teams that like to make excuses when their team loses and try to lay blame for their loss such as blaming the referees.

Having said this, I still expect the Steelers to win. But, I don’t know. It could go either way.

just shoot him up with whatever James Harrison takes before every game and he’ll be fine.

The Steelers don’t bitch and moan when a starter goes down. They plug in the backup, and play football.

With that said, Legursky is giving up a huge size, and strenght advantage against Raji. His technique better be on point.

I seem to recall the whiniest fanbase in football whining they had 7 starters out when they got their ass handed to them by the Pats. Hmmm…..how soon we forget.

Kind of the way the Pats got their asses handed to them by the Jets, huh?

Can’t believe four people gave a thumbs-up to sleazysnake’s assertion that retired Kevin Mawae is in this year’s Pro Bowl. Is anyone paying attention to the labor negotiations?

    @calloustongue …

I know about Raji, won’t be underestimating him, and would prefer to have Pouncey at full-strength going against him. But it is what it is, and we will have to adjust. No excuses, remember?

    @Pats fans …

Gee, a lot of you are mouthing off about how the Pack is going to kill us. Seems like only yesterday most of you were showing us the love and begging us to take out the Jets. One could almost think you were … insincere :)

    @cintiphil …

You’re right, the Steelers are in decline and our QB is over the hill. He’s almost two whole years older than Aaron Rodgers. By the way … how are things at the bottom of the division? Enjoying looking up at Cleveland?

    Sorry DEB:

Leave comments to people who played the game. There is no need for insults about teams. Did you remember last year when the lowly Benglas whipped your ass TWICE? No one said anything about age in the comments I saw. That is not what we are talking about when we say the Steelers are not hitting on all eight at this time. The are sluggish on offense and not taking all opportunities given to them. But then you never played the game did you?

By the way sports fans, PLEASE leave the Pat’s and the Jets out of the discussion. They are history for this year, as are the Bears and Atlanta.

You might be right, but don’t you hate it when people twist around what you say? This “Deb” comments on the age of players, when no one was speaking about age, then to make a stupid comment about what happened last year makes no sense, except if you want to try to insult someone. So I hit her with the obvious failings of past Steelers, which make no sense either, to bring home a point. She is clearly a fan, but a true HOMER, without any clear thought or logic. So. I let her have it back.. So What?

So you’re working on the assumption that every man commenting here has played football, but the woman has not. Interesting. Actually … I was required to play football for a semester in 10th-grade phys. ed. Of course, it wasn’t supposed to be tackle football–but you’ve never played with girls, have you, big guy? Some of them scratch, bite, and fist-punch the boobs. It’s not fun being dragged around the field by your hair. Since you can’t handle being on a blog with a woman, those girls would have torn you apart on a football field.

Someone on another thread was declaring the Steelers over-the-hill agewise, and when you said we were “in decline,” I mentally connected the two comments. But your nose is out of joint because I called it: You’re a Cincy fan taking a shot at the Steelers the same way the Bears and Vikes fans are taking shots at the Pack. I’d suggest you man up and own it. But the real men here–including many Bengals fans–don’t have any problem with women who enjoy football.

I’ve been on PFT/CFT quite a while and won’t be going anywhere. Live with it.

Great comeback to the Pats fans. So Mr. Bossy has popped onto the site and decided from one comment that I’m a HOMER without clear thought or logic. Uh-huh. My my, he does have woman issues ;)

Oh my, cintiphil … you let me have it and my lil pea brain is just spinning in my head. Whatever will I do now, being such an empty-headed and illogical creature? Perhaps you could explain the game to me, since you’re such an expert and all. What is a first down? And is the ball round like a soccer ball or oval-shaped like a rugby ball? Now does this game stop for a two-minute warning or is that NCAA football? Oh I’m soooo confused

***Didn’t the Steelers win their last Super Bowl with their backup offensive line playing due to injuries?***

Well the Cardinals were roughly the 21st best team in the league with the fourth worst defense in 2008. Meanwhile the Pack are arguably the second best team in NFL this year with arguably the best defense. The Cardinals of 2008 were basically the Seahawks this year. That is who Pitt vanquished for their last Superbowl, and that was by the hair on their chiny-chin-chin as I recall. The only hope Pittsburgh has is if McCarthy dials up one of his awesome gameplans that has the Pack treading water for 2 or 3 quarters on offense.

Legursky held his own vs Shaun Ellis and no doubt will doubt he same with some fat kid named Raji, who people outside Green Bay never heard of! Steeelrs will rock the Pack!

    ———————————————

you’ll know who he is after next Sunday….along with a few other names you may not know now.

That beingsaid, I agree with Candianvikingfanii–losing a starting center is a big deal. He is the center (sorry) of communications for the line. Good thing they’ll have a couple of weeks to work on it.

No predictions from me, just think it will be a good game –maybe one of the best (top5) SB’s ever

jw731 says: Mike Webster woulda played…..Just sayin

HaHa. He would NEVER make it in football today. Have you seen the players from the 70s? (not just the Steelers). Watch some highlights on ESPN classic or the NFL network–they would be flagged damn near every play. Goodell would have had a field day with fines :)

toolkien says: Well the Cardinals were roughly the 21st best team in the league with the fourth worst defense in 2008…The Cardinals of 2008 were basically the Seahawks this year.

Uh-huh. Make excuses, but they made it to the Super Bowl which means they were better than the 30 teams that didn’t make it, so they must have been pretty good. Give ‘em some credit.

Well, at least you admitted it. You are on your way to recovery. Now go back into the kitchen and cook something up! Good girl..
