Ray Sherman to satisfy Rooney Rule, again

Tennessee Titans Pic

The Cowboys “interviewed” then-receivers coach Ray Sherman for their head coaching vacancy on January 4, and by January 6 they’d named Jason Garrett to the position. Sherman, an African American, was used to satisfy the Rooney Rule for Dallas owner Jerry Jones.

Sherman will do the same for the Titans.

ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reports that Tennessee has scheduled an interview with Sherman for its head coaching vacancy. Titans owner Bud Adams can proceed with the widely anticipated promotion of offensive line coach Mike Munchak to head coach after Sherman’s interview.

While Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is often pointed to as an example of the Rooney Rule’s efficacy, coaches like Sherman and Perry Fewell might disagree.

Sherman can only hope that his string of seemingly token interviews pays off as Leslie Frazier and Ron Rivera’s did. Or that it gets him a job at any level.

Garrett did not retain Sherman when constructing his staff in Dallas, and he is currently a free agent.
