Lil Wayne records Super Bowl song and it’s actually pretty good

PBA Chris Paul Celebrity Bowling Invitational Getty Images

This is a post Florio and MDS would not write.  It’s probably one many of you don’t want to read.

But when one of the best rappers alive records a late-night Super Bowl song and it’s surprisingly listenable, well, I’m going to mention it.

Weezy’s “Green & Yellow” is a direct answer to Pittsburgh-based Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” which was released in the Fall and almost went to No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

Considering there’s no chance Wayne actually wrote any of the song down beforehand, some of the lines are pretty good:

“Big Cheese on the helmet/Steel Curtain, what is that, velvet?/If we win, gonna throw a Super Bowl party/And blow a cigar like Vince Lombardi.”

Or . . .

“We knocked the Eagles and the Falcons and the Bears off/Now we’re about to cut Troy Polamalu’s hair off.”

Okay, if this post gets any longer they may not send me back to the Super Bowl again.

This song is absolute garbage. seriously. Someone needs to ask Wayne which team he wants to root for because up until this year he was all about the saints.

    1. This is 100% a written. Enough said.

    2. One of the best rappers alive? Yeah, if you’re a 15 year old girl and started listening to hip hop in 2006. In fact, wiz > wayne and it’s not close

Please stick to football news, not hip hop reviews.

  6. cityofchampyinz says: Feb 3, 2011 3:37 PM

Traitor! This song is nothing but a publicity stunt….I guess it worked. Is their no actual football news right now?? The last couple days have been awful.

  7. n2thaizzo says: Feb 3, 2011 3:39 PM

So because he WAS rooting for the Saints, now he can’t root for the Packers? Maybe he dislikes Pittsburgh much more… Who says you can’t have a 2nd favorite team?

  8. iheartarodg says: Feb 3, 2011 3:42 PM

actually, Weezy has always loved the Packers, has a house in Green Bay and attends several games at Lambeau every year…also, there are many songs he references the packers/Favre/Lombardi

  9. steelersmichele says: Feb 3, 2011 3:43 PM

We knocked the Eagles and the Falcons and the Bears off…

…and now we’re gonna knock off another artist’s song

  10. assnfootball says: Feb 3, 2011 3:45 PM

    @bleedgreen4life.
You could be for one team and still be able to support another team in the championship if your team didn’t make it.

Wayne is just taking advantage of the circumstances relating to the songs background and current events.

  11. mrf47 says: Feb 3, 2011 3:46 PM

What you have just said, is the most insanely idiotic thing I have ever heard. At no point, in your rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul.

  14. pottersquash says: Feb 3, 2011 3:49 PM

    @bleedgreen4life

Lil Wayne cheered AGAINST Saints during NFC Championship game because his Packers luv couldnt bring him to go against Brett Favre.

This song, like Prince’s last year, does single a Steelers victory but do not question Lil Waynes’s Cheese Love.

    ===

Not true. Lil’ Wayne said to MTV last year around the time of the NFC CG that he was rooting for the Vikings over the Saints because he’d grown up a big Packers/Brett Favre fan. So he’s never been “all about” the Saints.

I guess you could say at least he didn’t jump on the Saints’ bandwagon… but seeing as how he was born and raised in New Orleans, looks to me like he was a bandwagon jumper back in the 90s, becoming a fan of Green Bay rather than his hometown team. Kind of like how Lebron James is somehow a big Cowboys fan.

  16. actiondanwi says: Feb 3, 2011 3:53 PM

Lil Wayne has been a Packers fan for a very long time.

    Quit frontin’, yo.

This is Packers country, where your green card?

  17. terrellblowens says: Feb 3, 2011 3:59 PM

Lil Wayne’s music sucks and he is a fake Pack fan. He was rooting for Favre last year, who was on the Vikings, over his hometown Saints. Some Packers fan.

assnfootball says: Wayne is just taking advantage of the circumstances relating to the songs background and current events.

Wayne is taking advantage of another artist’s successful song. The truth is, Wiz Khalifa wrote his song BEFORE the season began because he loves the Steelers.

Wayne “wrote” his song AFTER the Packers made it to the Super Bowl…but you’re right about one thing: he’s trying to capitalize on “current events.”

Not to mention that he needed a good dental plan to remove all that gold from his mouth. And whats up with the tattooed face. Common’s still alive.
Most of the Wu-Tang Clan is still alive.
Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Nas, Jay-Z (and I don’t even like Jay-Z), Mobb Deep, Snoop, Ice Cube, KRS-One, Run and DMC, they’re all still alive.

Funny, the Ravens came out with a “Black and Purple” remake, then the Jets came out with a J-E-T-S remix. Now we have a Green & Yellow knock-off.

I’m sure all 3 of these cheap imitations will sell real well once the Packers lose. Just like the knock-off Terrible Towels all 3 teams made.

Exactly, nice stretch, but unless you’re from New york, New Jersey, or up north; FOR THE MOST PART, you have no idea who most of those artist are.

Look at BET / VHI / hip hop .com see who they have as the number 1 hip hop artist some will have lil wayne some will have Eminem, neither will have any of the ones you just mentioned.

Nice try but you don’t have any clue what a good lyricist is, or good hip hop. Stick to what you know, Word-up Magazine articles and JET top 10 charts.

Now back to football GO STEELERS!!!

  47. kcjohnson2 says: Feb 3, 2011 6:55 PM

    Haters.

First, Wayne is one of the hottest mixtape artists out there (see “No Ceilings”). That’s what this is, a mixtape track. That is where you borrow another artist’s track and provide your own lyrics. For those saying it’s a “knock-off”, yes it is, but that’s the point.

Second, Wayne is just playing around. He goes nice, rather than HAM. He mentions a bathroom and doesn’t even take a shot at Big Ben in the same breath.

Third, saying Wiz is greater than Wayne is ridiculous. Wiz is hot, but Wayne has a longer resume. See Tha Carter Vol. I, II, and III.

Throw it up, touchdown over Ike Taylor! Nice word play.

    Go Pack Go!

Only people from New York/New Jersey know who Nas is? Wu-Tang? Mos Def?

Popular does not equal good. So you can say Wayne accomplished more than Mobb Deep or KRS-One, but where would he be without those rappers? If Wayne would be flipping burgers if rap music is what it used to be.

    MTV doesn’t play music.
    VH1 doesn’t play music.
BET plays everybody hates chris reruns…

Nas’ debut album is better than anything Wayne’s ever put out.

2006 Saints go to NFC Championship – lil Wayne says “black and gold soul with a fresh new Orleans fitted…” on one of those The Drought mixtapes along with other Saints’ mentions.

Then when everyone was on the Cowboys’ balls, Lil Wayne also had many ppl on his testes including espn, where he was on Around the Horn and even “wrote” his own columns where he proclaimed his love of the Dallas Cowboys… Google them to search espn.com they should still be there.

Now packers in the sb and now hes singing green and yellow… Plus is a diehard packer fan? Pfffff hahahahaha

    Btw rap/hip hop sucks.

  56. senjecko3 says: Feb 3, 2011 11:11 PM
