Mike McCarthy: We respect Pittsburgh, but this is our time

Super Packers

Packers coach Mike McCarthy is feeling confident following the Packers’ last on-field practice before Super Bowl XLV.

McCarthy told Jim Trotter, who’s serving as the pool reporter at Packers practices, that he’s excited about how confident his players seem heading into their showdown with the Steelers.

“The one thing you want to see in your football team is that the players have maintained confidence throughout the process,” McCarthy said. “Our guys have done that. They totally believe what’s in front of them. They believe in what they’ve seen on film. We respect Pittsburgh, but we feel that this is our time and Sunday will be our night.”

The Packers still have one “jog-through” practice on Saturday morning and regular team meetings Saturday and Sunday, but as of their final full practice, McCarthy thinks his team is ready to bring home the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

“I feel good about preparation,” he said. “I thought today was sharp.”

    Twas the Night Before the Super Bowl

    ‘Twas the night before the Super Bowl, when along the gulf shore,
    Steelers fans were praying for “just one more;”

    The players were nestled all snug in the sack,
    With visions of number 7 against the Pack;

    Coach Tomlin was young, but wise for his years,
    So I drifted off to sleep without any fears;

    When at the stadium there arose some strange chatter,
    The Packers feared, what was the matter;

    We heard “Okel Dokel”, we heard “Double Yoi,”
    We jumped from our beds, our hearts jumped for joy;

    He stood at the fifty with a grin ear to ear,
    Steelers fans everywhere started to cheer;

    Then in an instant to our surprise,
    This little old man had tears in his eyes;

    He went to the booth and there took his chair,
    While Terrible Towels waved in the air;

    Then over the airwaves came his shrill voice,
    The Steelers Nation began to rejoice;

    He said, “I am back, but you know I can’t stay,
    I just had to see my Steelers play;

    From my home up above, I have a great view,
    But I wanted to celebrate here with you;

    So bring on the Pack, we’ll send them a flyin’,
    On the way back to Greenbay, they will be cryin';

    Ben, Hines, Troy , Wallace and all of the rest,
    No matter the outcome, to me you’re the best;”

    The airwaves went silent, the stadium still,
    Was this just a dream, it seemed so real;

    In our team we have faith, in our team we have hope,
    But the game’s not quite the same without Myron Cope;

    This doofus predicted the Vikings winning the division (beating the Packers twice) and the Super Bowl. Only this odd smelling Douche would say McCarthy is delusional. Really are you just mad because the last time the Vikings had a chance to win a Lombardi trophy was 1977.
    The last time they even sniffed at a chance was last year and had to use a lying wife cheating sexter exPacker running the show and they blew it
    Wow one of the head coaches in the Super Bowl saying it is our time.

After each Packer win he dissappeared from those web sites. No Guts. Well talk it up pervert this is your last chance before the Packers become World Champions for the 13th time. How many do the Vikings have again? Oh yea thats right ZERO!!!!

    Packers last 13 games:
    Record 10-3 (8 road 5 home)
    Points Scored 26.1
    Points Allowed 13.7
    Point Differential +161
    Opponents Wins 131 (10-6 avg.)

    Steelers last 13 games:
    Record 10-3 (6 road 7 home)
    Points Scored 24.3
    Points Allowed 16.5
    Point Differential +101
    Opponents Wins 105 (8-8 avg.)

    Packers are a better team with better stats against better competetion and are playing at a higher level…simple math!

    As a Pittsburgh Steeler/AFC fan, it’s refreshing not to hear the bombastic crap coming out of Rex Ryans mouth. MM seems to be a good guy and Steeler fans shouldn’t take offense or I’m sure more than one post will remind us of MT’s “unleash hell” quote.

    Both sides should be proud of their teams. The fact that there is no big market team in the Super Bowl would ordinarily have the experts yapping about why nobody will be watching. Yet this should be the highest viewership of any game.

    Besides how can it get any better than to have your team celebrate either a 7th or 4th Lombardi Trophy as Jerry Jones craps his Depends!

    “We’re a good football team. We’ve been a good football team all year. We have an opportunity to achieve greatness, and that will start with the second step in Atlanta.”

    How’d that work out for the No. 1 seed with the best record?

    The last time McCarthy said this was just before the Jets game when the east coast media had the NYJ one of the best teams of all time. McCarthy told the boys not to believe the hype — believe your own eyes.

    bottom line, if GB has fewer than 10 penalties, GB wins. It’ll come down to refs for the Steelers, as always.

  56. calloustongue says: Feb 5, 2011 8:10 AM

    He’s right. The Packers are more focused, more talented, and hungrier for a title than the Steelers.

    Do Steelers fans have such low self esteem they have to whine and cry when they aren’t picked to win unanimously? The Packers are playing at the top of their game and match up very well against the Steelers across the board. They are confident after having won 5 must win games, 3 of them on the road.

    Yet Steeler fans act like little babies when other fans and the media don’t drop to their knees in awe of their past accomplishments. They disrespect Green Bay’s path to the Super Bowl, the entire NFC, and their own team with the crap they spew.

    It is the Packers time, as it will be for years to come. Sorry Pittsburgh, but they don’t give away Lombardi Trophies simply because you’ve been there before.

    Go Pack GO!

  57. jpacker says: Feb 5, 2011 8:18 AM

    These Steeler fans are something else. What is MM supposed to say? “It is not our time and we will lose?” The Packers could very well lose, as could the Steelers. At least, the Packers do not have an alleged rapist as their QB, and a thug as a LB, but I guess in Pit, as long as the team wins character does not matter.

    Denver beat Green Bay
    New England beat St. Louis
    New Orleans beat Indy
    Tampa beat Oakland

    All teams just wanted it more. I think Steelers fans know deep in there hearts that they are just going to lose on Sunday. |They tell themselves that they are superior because of there past accomplishments. Green Bay is just 100 focused on winning the title while Pittsburgh expects to be givin the title. There will be a changing of the guard in the NFL on Sunday and I think everyone knows it. Steelers Colts and Pats all had a great decade but everything comes to an end. The NFLS next great team and its next great qb are born on Sunday!!!

    This highlighting of McCarthy’s comment is obviously just a frustrated media’s attempt to stoke a fire and gain readers, like you and I. ;)

    To Steeler’s fans, MM’s statement, taken in its entirety, is actually a COMPLIMENT to you and your team. One I share–just like McCarthy (a Pittsburgh native), most of us Pack fans realize we should respect Steelers nation, and do. I haven’t read any Packer fan (or Steelers Fan) predicting a Packer win to predict a blowout type of win (e.g., 37-10) for this game. Heck, most of us respect your traditions, your contribution to the league in terms of having a class owner and a loyal, humble-yet-fervent, intelligent-yet-not-arrogant fanbase who sticks with their team in the good and the bad. (I was at the game last year at Heinz Field–apart from a little fun ribbing from your fans, I was never spit on, my car wasn’t trashed. I was treated with class, and btw, your stadium food is awesome!) Pittsburgh is a great city, great mix of white and blue collar culture, similar to my childhood town of Milwaukee. We respect your success, or should—I mean, who is any fan of another team to talk smack against a team with 6 Lombardi’s in their case?! Well, ok, a Vikings fan like Pervy maybe, but just googling Prince and his horrific “Viking’s Fight Song” written for their meltdown of last year tells you all you need to know about what fans are really lost in a mirage of grandeur! lol (Actually, we need our “token” Vikings fans like Pervy on here, if for no other reason than to show us by their behavior how we should NOT behave as fans of teams with a winning tradition. So thankyou to all you Viking trolls!)

    MM said he respected Pittsburgh. No doubt he does, given he grew up in Pittsburgh and grew up a Steelers fan. So when he goes on to say, “but this is our time”, he is not pulling a “Ryan” and talking smack at Pittsburgh to prop his team up, but rather is simply talking to his own players—that while they all truly should and do respect the “fearsome” Steelers, and rightfully so, they can’t let their “respect” for the Steelers turn into a subservient “fear” of the Steelers when they play them in this game…I mean, if McCarthy had said, “We respect the Steelers, but this MAY be our time”, then all that does is instill doubt/uncertainty in the Packers players going into the game, rather than certain confidence they’re gonna need against a formidable foe they respect.

    That’s all it is. Again, it’s actually a compliment to Steeler nation. I hope the intelligent fans in Steeler nation will take it this way.

    Fwiw, and I no doubt might catch flak from some fellow Packers fans for saying this, but I’m predicting a 27-24 win by the Steelers, for reasons among other things of their past Super Bowl experience, which will keep them more even-keeled through the game. Also, while Rodgers certainly can more readily “escape” the rush than Big Ben, nevertheless, Big Ben has an amazing ability to “withstand” the rush, getting the ball out, and given his size, does not go down easy with rushers hanging all over him. Besides this, he has that great intangible of being able to pyschologically cope with the rush and not ever get riled up even if he’s taking alot of sacks. He loves getting hit and can’t take the hits physically more than Rodgers can. No one, including Big Ben himself, would say he wins “pretty”, but he does win nevertheless. (Yes, I do fear that Rodger’s could get knocked out of the game by a Harrison or Polamalu in courageously trying to move the chains by running for the marker.) I’m not saying Rodgers isn’t “tough”, but there is no tougher QB in the NFL than Roethlisburger. It’s not just Big Ben, but that Steeler’s “toughness” of the whole team that I respect, if not fear. I hope I am wrong in my prediction of a Steelers victory, but it’s because like McCarthy I do respect the Steelers that I say this. Besides, a good dictum for a fan of any team to hold (except for the Minneapolis Vikings fans who are simply hopeless) is this:

    “Never underestimate your opponent and never overestimate your team.”

    Having said that, while I don’t think I’m overestimating the Steelers, I can only hope I am underestimating my Pack. Regardless of the outcome, I think we can agree that it won’t be a blowout by either side. They are both good teams—the Steelers have the toughness factor, the Packers have the savvy, finesse factor. It’s like the lighter, swifter Ali (Packers) vs. the bigger, tougher Foreman or Frazier (Steelers). Nevertheless, I hope that both teams do not beat themselves, but play their best, to their maximum potential, and given that, I then hope the best team wins, and that they clearly proved to be the better team by how the game went. If this happens, I can’t complain as a fan of one of these two teams, and without reservations or excuses, will give all credit to the winner. There would no shame in the Packers losing to the Steelers, and I’d hope the Steeler Nation would feel the same if the outcome were the opposite.

    @jpacker …

    Steelers fans aren’t complaining about what your coach said. What’s ridiculous is your fanbase on here crowing that the king is dead, long live the king before the game is played … whining about the refs throwing the game before the game is played … rejoicing in the death of a good guy like Myron Cope … and of course, trash like you deciding your team has some kind of superiority because our QB was–ACCORDING TO THE EVIDENCE AND AUTHORITIES–falsely accused of rape when you had SEVEN players accused of rape because one was shacked up with two hookers while his wife was giving birth. Yeah, you guys have really captured the moral high road. :roll:

    @Deb

    While I agree with your post and also hate this ridiculous, blowhard smack talk by any fan and/or air of moral superiority, especially when it’s my own Packer fans, let’s be a little more accurate about whom it applies to. Not all of the Packer “fanbase”, let alone all of the Packer fanbase “on here” is crowing such “King is dead” crap before the game, anymore than all Steelers fans are suggesting their team will blow-out the Packers. Heck, not only is that unintelligent, given how good the Steelers are, but it’s also foolish, lest we rile up the ‘Karma gods of football’. ;)

    There are proportionate number of classy and classless fans for every team, Packers and Steelers included. For sure, percentage wise there may be more or less of one or the other depending on which team/fans we’re talking about. (Heck, I’d even say the Vikings have some classy fans—I think I might have met one once. ;) No, seriously, they do too.)

  67. Deb says: Feb 5, 2011 4:31 PM

    @dwhitehurst …

    Agreed :) I know some classy Packer fans. And since I can’t imagine why any Pack fan would take such a shot at Myron, that was probably someone from our division anyway. I am sooo with you on the ‘Karma gods of football.’ Every time some Steelers fan starts counting those unhatched chickens, I cringe. Don’t think of myself as superstitious, but my mind starts screaming “Jinx jinx!! Don’t tempt fate!!!” :shock:

    Just hope it’s a good, injury-free game for all … including me. The last five minutes of our previous Super Bowl nearly sent me to the hospital LOL

  68. dwhitehurst says: Feb 5, 2011 6:19 PM

    @Deb…..

    I hear ya. My TV almost didn’t survive the 4th quarter of the Packers-Bears game when the Packers suddenly started giving it away. ;)

    Actually though, I’ll be much more even-keeled for this game. While like you I want my team to win, I honestly do not NEED my team to win. (Real Life>Football.) Granted, it helps us both to have at least one previous Lombardi Trophy is the case to cope should our team lose the game. And like I’ve said, there’s no shame if the Packers were to lose to a great team like the Steelers. Most of us Packer fans would never have predicted we’d get this far given all our injuries and we couldn’t write a better scenario than taking the Halas Trophy from the Bears on their home turf!! (I mean, that is close if not equal to what a victory over the Steelers in Dallas would be.) Then again, given the Steelers own injuries, especially on your Offensive line, perhaps you guys feel the same way about making it to the SB this year. That you have is a huge credit to your QB, your defense, your coaching staff, etc. Anybody smacking Big Ben for something he was acquited of is just being an idiot. (Was he foolish? Yes. Guilty of a crime? No. I’d say the same thing about our own Mark Chmura.)

    So Deb, I hope you and Steeler Nation don’t merely “survive” watching the game in its entirety, but that you truly “enjoy” the game too, regardless of whom wins or loses!

    @Token Vikings fan (El Pervo),

    Hey, being that I am a st8 hetero lad (unlike yourself), San Francisco rocks! So much less competition! Being a token Minneapple-ite like you are Token, this is even more true of your city, given it’s higher percentage of “Rainbow nation” than even San Francisco (as anyone whose gone to Mall of America realizes after seeing the number of “Adam and Steve’s” holding hands). Heck, I’d make a killing in your town given all the eligible Scandinavian broads looking for one normal guy, that is, were it not for the fact they all get smart and move to Colorado or Arizona after high school, leaving only the big-boned Brunhilda’s behind, which make Wisconsin’s Dairy Queens look anorexic in comparison. Ah, Minneapple, where the women are men and the sheep are nervous!

    I would certainly hope that a Viqueen like yourself would never think differently of me than you do. But hey, I want you to know that it’s ok. We all know. No need to try to misdirect people’s attention away from your reality. Some of us don’t approve of it, but we do tolerate it. It’s a free country. Besides, knowing a Viqueen like yourself just helps us appreciate our own states and teams all the more. :)

    P.S.: Have fun with Frett tommorrow night. ;)

    Win or lose, one think I’ve discovered about the town of Green Bay; the place is full of retards that obviously have nothing better to do with their time than to put a cheese prop on their head and act like bafoons.

    I just want Harrison to take on good shot at Rodger’s glass noggin….that’s all:)

    And what’s wrong with talking to girls, macho man? You might try it on occasion, the experience may open new horizons in existentialistic perception. Miracles do happen on occasion.
