We like to think that we hear most rumors, true and sketchy, that are related to the NFL.
But we have to admit Ravens G.M. Ozzie Newsome’s comments about Ray Lewis possibly retiring took us totally off guard. Apparently, there have been “a lot” of whispers in Baltimore that the Ravens have offered Lewis a financial package to retire.
Mike Preston of the Baltimore Sun talked to both parties and said it wasn’t true.
“We just had our personnel meetings this week, and Ray hasn’t told any off our defensive staff he was retiring,” G.M. Ozzie Newsome said. “The last I heard from Ray he stood up at the end-of-the-year meeting and told his teammates that he had already begun to prepare for next season.”
Lewis reportedly “laughed off” the possibility and tried to recruit free agents to Baltimore at the Pro Bowl. So, um, we guess there is nothing to this.
Just the fact that Newsome and the Sun chose to address the possibility is a bit of a surprise.
