Jets issue statement on Sanchez story

Mark Sanchez

The Deadspin article regarding Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez’s alleged relationship with a 17-year-old girl included a mention that the team is preparing a statement.

The statement will threaten the lives of no trees.  Assuming that anyone actually prints statements onto paper any more.

Jets spokesman Bruce Speight has forwarded to PFT the official team statement.  All nine words of it.

“We are not going to discuss Mark’s private life.”

(At least they didn’t call it a personal matter.)

The Jets are making the right move here.  If the allegations are true, Sanchez has done nothing wrong.

NON STORY!! Like he’s the first 24yr old guy ever to mess with a 17yr old. Wow!! Anything for a jet hating story!!

  6. wtf__seriously says: Feb 5, 2011 10:52 AM

The team’s statement is 100% appropriate.

The story itself? Well, it sounds like some girl is looking for a college fund donation.

  7. laxer37 says: Feb 5, 2011 10:58 AM

TMZ has pictures of Sanchez with the girl picking out her prom dress.

  8. zimaman says: Feb 5, 2011 11:00 AM

well you have to give the Jets credit they are always ahead of the media and have their responses prepared and they are consistent with no comment

now that “footgate” is over they better hope this story doesn’t develop into any criminal misconduct. the parents of the 17 year old in question would be calling the shots in this case if i am not mistaken.

i hope for Mark’s sake everything works out cause these types of situations can take on a life of their own

  9. moosewolsey says: Feb 5, 2011 11:00 AM

  10. acursor says: Feb 5, 2011 11:01 AM

I don’t know any more about this story than what I’ve read here. Remember this: other states have different minimum ages for consenting to sexual activity. We don’t know where Sanchez’s alleged contact occurred (or if it even occurred). If it was in a state where 18 is the age, (e.g., California), there’s potentially an issue. Some states also lower the age if the difference between the two is small.

  11. sergisbauer says: Feb 5, 2011 11:04 AM

“If the allegations are true, Sanchez has done nothing wrong.”

Might have been better put as, “If the allegations are true, Sanchez has done nothing illegal.”

Expect to get some opinions back from the companies he has endorsement deals with whether he did anything “wrong.” I won’t pass judgement on a 20-something QB getting it on with a 17-year-old girl, but I bet PepsiCo might.

  12. jrc007 says: Feb 5, 2011 11:11 AM

Hey Genius, how can you say he did nothing wrong? Who says the activity occurred in NY or NJ? Her attorney is from California, where the age of consent is 18 not 17. You don’t have enough facts to make that statement, not that anyone should expect that to stop you.

  13. saberstud75 says: Feb 5, 2011 11:13 AM

  17. gonzolo4 says: Feb 5, 2011 11:18 AM

Mark Sanchez did nothing wrong only by a technicality, ask yourself. If it was your 17 year old daughter, would you as a FATHER have a problem with it? Your daughter who just finished or is still in HIGH SCHOOL having a relationship with a 24 year old man. Unless of course you’re the kind of father who doesn’t mind selling his daughter out for the right some of money, wether she gets prenant or sues his ass in court, in which case you get paid right? people like that make me sick. Hopefully Mark Sanchez will learn from this and pursue WOMEN not GIRLS his own age.

Besides be a scumbag, no nothing legally wrong. Still scummy. Just like banging a consenting drunk chick in a bar bathroom… I forgive you Ben, if a hot coed was after half these PFTers, they would bang her in a bathroom too. Only they have no money, so she wouldn’t sue.

  20. jamaltimore says: Feb 5, 2011 11:28 AM

Nothing to see hear the guy could have most any girl in NY and he’s picking up high schoolers! Nothing wrong by legal standards compared to nothing wrong in the court of public opinion are quite different.

Oh well it could be worse your head coach’s wife could be publishing foot fetish videos with random men on the Internet? Or your star defender could have 8 or 9 kids to seven diferent women and not be able to remember their names?

Just another day in the NFL.

  21. carryingweight says: Feb 5, 2011 11:37 AM

Thumbs up if you thing an NFL quarterback making millions should be dating a 17 year old who legally has a midnight curfew, or thumbs down if the you just lost respect for this guy.

  22. scytherius says: Feb 5, 2011 11:43 AM

Well, if sex is involved then it’s a felony since he is over 18 (some states require the adult to be over 21 if the minor is 16 or older. Otherwise it is a misdemeanor).

So, it’s somewhat incorrect to flat out allege he’s done nothing wrong. If there is no sex involved … he’s a kid too. Big damn deal.

  23. cowboyfandan says: Feb 5, 2011 12:07 PM

Your last sentence should read “legally wrong in NY” to be more accurate. What he has done is morally wrong and downright embarassing in 50 states. You mean to tell me that the QB of the New York Jets has trouble getting babes??? Sanchez…go into hiding. You have embarassed yourself beyond belief.

  24. habsman says: Feb 5, 2011 12:13 PM

As far as the NFL is concerned its a non-issue. It wouldn’t matter if the girl was 12, Roger Goodell (Former NY Jets Employee) isn’t going to do anything about it.

  25. wtf__seriously says: Feb 5, 2011 12:18 PM

Just read the Deadspin article, and even I am guilty of jumping to conclusions before clicking on the letter from the girl’s lawyer to Deadspin, stating that there is no story and Deadspin needs to stop harrassing this 17 year old girl. Her attorney is asking them to hand over any photos they allegedly have, stating NY and CT Penal Codes that they are against the law, and further stating that the girl has done nothing wrong, nothing illegal, and she is being harrassed by Deadspin. The attorney asked Deadspin to stop repeatedly calling and emailing her.

This story makes good bullletin board material, but in the end, 17 year old is saying there was no relationship, nothing illegal occured, and she is threatening to sue Deadspin if they don’t stop repeatedly harrassing her. about something that never happened

(Yes, I did post this same thing on the PFT article originally breaking the story. Just thought it needed to be seen by those that read this story without seeing the other. Thanks. )

  27. goawayeverybody says: Feb 5, 2011 12:26 PM

While this at first seems to be a very unpalatable story, if one can get past his or her own ageism, there’s probably more than meets the eye here. After all, in life, one meets 50-year olds who run their lives like teenagers and teenagers who carry themselves with a great deal of maturity.

Btw, each state is free to determine for itself the age of consent. It’s shocking that people don’t know that. For instance, the age of consent in New York is 17, but in New Jersey it’s 16. Ironically, in almost the entire “bible belt”, the age of consent is 16, but in most of the “Wild West” it’s 18.

Right there is everything that is wrong with the NY Jets organization: Woody Johnson doesn’t care what kind of immoral crap any of his players or coaches gets into.

THIS is the team that brought us Brett Favre sending c–k shots and predatory texts to several women, including the team’s massage therapists.

THIS is the team that brought us the Ines Saniz fiasco.

THIS is the team that brought us a coach who posted foot-fetish videos on YouTube and threesome requests for “domination and humiliation” on sites like ALT.

THIS is the team that refused to fire Sal Alosi for lying to them about supposedly coming up with the idea to trip an opposing player on the sidelines – mere feet from the HC – all on his own.

And now THIS is the team who’s 24 year old franchise quarterback is hanging out in the bedroom of a 17 year old high school Senior. Ben Roethlisberger would be proud of this guy. While state law says it wouldn’t be statutory rape if they had sex, HOW GOOD DOES IT LOOK THAT YOUR QB IS HANGING OUT WITH 17 YEAR OLDS??????

Woody Johnson, your team is a morally bankrupt JOKE!!!!! STAND UP FOR SOMETHING, FOR GOD’S SAKES.

  35. richm2256 says: Feb 5, 2011 1:26 PM

Mike, if YOU had a 17 year old daughter, how would YOU feel is a 24 year old NFL quarterback was hanging out with her in her bedroom? Would you still think “Sanchez has done nothing wrong”?????

At what point is there such a thing as “too much” in the NFL these days?

As good as they were on the field this year, I am thoroughly disgusted by the personal conduct of this team, and the complete lack of accountability by either the owner, or the Commissioner.

Nearly 20 years ago, 38-year-old Jerry Seinfeld, then one of the most famous people in America, would openly walk around Manhattan with his girlfriend, Shoshanna Lonstein, who was 17 at most. In fact, many sources claim they began dating when she was 16, which is below the agent of consent in New York.

And the media said nary a word. Not a peep. Jerry was still a hero.

But now, 24-year-old Mark Sanchez, basically a kid himself, is hitting some white-hot 17-year-old ass that every straight man in America would hit whether he was 24 or 64, and people have a problem.

  37. zaggs says: Feb 5, 2011 1:35 PM

I dont see anywhere where its stated that the activity happened in New York or New Jersey. As JRC007 noted, her lawyer is from the 310 area code which is Beverly Hills and carries a higher age of consent. They also mention Connecticut and depending on the situation the age of consent may be 16 or 18. The quoting of New York laws in the letter is due to Deadspin being in New York.
Of course this once again brings into question Floor-Boy’s accreditation as a lawyer as he once again goes off without relevant facts.
Of course in time we’ll find out that the girl in question got photographed publicly in a bikini and floor-boy were merely resort to the “she was asking for it” defense of another Jet quarterback.

However, if she happens to have a bitter friend who convinces her to falsely claim sexual assault, then the league has no recourse but to suspend him for six games (with the possibility of being reduced to four) because of a pattern of behavior due to another previous unsubstantiated encounter.

    ————————————————-

Except it is NOT statutory rape, and people really need to stop saying it is. Statutory rape has a specific legal definition, and according to the laws of New York (and the picture was allegedly taken from within Sanchez’s house) this is not statutory rape.

This girl is of legal consenting age, which isn’t even an issue because there has been no accusation of sexual conduct (only sleezy innuendo from the Deadspin writers). Furthermore, the girl has hired a lawyer in an attempt to prevent the article from coming out, saying that the photos Deadspin obtained were done so illegally. She is not claiming to be a victim and not charging Sanchez with anything.

If Sanchez had assaulted her, if she had been younger then 17, if Sanchez had some sort of employer/teacher relationship over her, then there would be an issue. However none of those things are true and the righteous outrage displayed here is out of place.

Mark Sanchez: “No he won’t, I have this”

    @richm2256 …

Oh rich … did you miss the part about the girl’s attorneys contacting Deadspin and saying there’s no story here and demanding that Deadspin stop harassing their client?

This is just more of the same old/same old gossip and innuendo. I have no idea what Sanchez’s relationship is with that girl … and neither do you. But she is over the age of consent in New York, so it’s no one’s business. If she were my daughter, I wouldn’t want her dating someone that age. But she’s not, and since her attorneys are telling Deadspin to back off, clearly her family feels the matter is under control.

Stop trying to paint all these innocent men as monsters. If you want to help people, there are plenty of real monsters out there and plenty of real victims. They’re not trying to extort money from NFL players or getting their jollies with their sorority sisters leading cops on wild goose chases.

  69. richm2256 says: Feb 5, 2011 11:38 PM

    @ Deb:

    “Innocent men”

Ben gets accused by two different women of sexual assault. His “best case” defense is that a 28 year old NFL quarterback has some form of “consensual” sexual contact in a dirty barroom bathroom with a 20 year old co-ed.

Brett Favre send pictures of his private parts to a Jets employee and sends predatory texts to her and three massage therapists who do work for the team.

Now there is some sort of relationship – sexual or not – between a 24 year old NFL quarterback and a 17 year old high school senior.A guy who was accused of rape while in college.

Yeah, “innocent” men. Happens to every team’s quarterback, right?

What does an NFL quarterback have to do before you start questioning his character, Deb?

    @rich ….

If you were a cop as you claim, you should be able to understand basic evidentiary findings. The Nevada woman was years older than Roethlisberger. They had a one-night stand and she texted people she wanted to see him again. That means the sex was consensual. In addition, the time stamps and content of her text messages conflict w/the timeline and content of her account of the “assault”–all of which I’ve read for myself. End of story.

Your feelings about the age difference between Roethlisberger and the Georgia woman are irrelevant. Didn’t you read about the Duke student who posted online her sex “thesis” reviewing 13 unsuspecting partners? Like it or not, a lot of young women screw their way through college and compete with each other for who can have sex in the most public places like bars and bathrooms. And a woman who would actually go out for the evening wearing a DTF pin–which she happily translates for a group of men as “Down to F***”–might well fall into that category. We know from witnesses at three establishments she was drinking heavily that night, purchasing her own alcohol using a fake ID. We know that
she pursued him, she engaged him in graphic sexual dialogue, she invited him back to her place. He refused. But he did go w/her to the bathroom for some consensual something that lasted less than 10 minutes. Witnesses refuted the claim of the bodyguard blocking the door and that story also conflicted with her written statement. Earlier Ben had personally thrown her friend out of the party for ragging him about his rape lawsuit. That friend is the one who dragged her to police and screamed she’d been raped, which she denied and the one who invented the bodyguard story. The accuser alleged only vaginal rape and the medical exam refuted that claim.

It doesn’t matter that Roethlisberger was accused twice since the evidence clearly shows both accusations were false.

It’s never been proved Favre sent those photos. But if he did, we know Sterger didn’t complain. And we know she showed them to friends “for laughs.” If a man had gotten photos of a woman’s genitalia and showed them to male friends “for laughs,” we’d be appalled by his behavior. We know he sent two texts making sexual propositions–they were not “predatory” messages. When a man propositions you and you aren’t interested, the typical response is “no.” Predators don’t ask.

With Sanchez, the girl’s family attorney has said nothing untoward is happening and told Deadspin to stop harassing her. You have no reason to believe she is a victim.

Celebrities attract a lot of false allegations. And I’m too familiar with real predators, rapists, and abusers–and their victims–to be impressed with nonsense. As I said, all it takes to convince me a man is a predator, is evidence he’s preyed on someone. We haven’t seen that evidence in any of these cases. If you were a cop, you should be able to look at these situations objectively and recognize them for what they are. If you want to champion something worthwhile, plenty of real victims could use your help. The Andrea McNultys, DTFs, and Jenn Stergers of the world neither needs it nor deserve it.

But, rich, if you’re talking about questioning character, I’ve said all along that Roethlisberger was a jackass and Favre was a dog with women. People can have all kinds of character flaws without being sexual predators. As for Sanchez … there’s just not enough to go on here to make any character judgment. Her family is saying there’s nothing to this. If they’re dating, the most I can say is that he may not have the best judgment. But it’s not illegal, so what else is there to say?
