Steelers make a game of it, but turnovers are costly

The Packers appeared to be in command at halftime, but as we begin the fourth quarter of Super Bowl XLV, the Steelers are making a game of it.

An eight-yard touchdown run by Rashard Mendenhall narrowed the deficit to 21-17, and the Steelers aren’t going down without a fight.

Statistically, the Steelers have been the better team in most aspects of the game: Pittsburgh has 15 first downs to Green Bay’s nine, and 296 yards to Green Bay’s 210.

But turnovers have hurt the Steelers: Ben Roethlisberger has two interceptions to none for Aaron Rodgers, and Mendenhall started the fourth quarter with a fumble. Now we’ll see if the Steelers can overcome those mistakes, or if it’s the Packers bringing home the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Refs are really going to have to step up their BS calls if Pissburgh is going to be given another one.

Two minutes left, down by six … can Roethlisberger do what MVPs do?

    No.

Where’s all those Steeler fans that were talkin sh*t about McCarthy, Rodgers, and the Packers? HA HA!!!!!

  10. richm2256 says: Feb 6, 2011 10:07 PM

Ben did not step up in this game … had just a handful of good throws.

Looked totally confused on that last drive, didn’t know what the hell they were doing.

Can’t say the Packers dominated this game, couldn’t pick an MVP with a gun to my head. They’re damn lucky to have won this, and the Steelers dropped a game the Packers were desperately trying to hand them.

The Packers are another typical piss-ant team who thinks they’re crap don’t stink. Just another team that talks a better game than they play. Come Sunday night, that Green Bay locker room and the state of Wiscooooooonsin are going to be very disappointed.

  18. stairwayto7 says: Feb 6, 2011 10:14 PM

Trying a 52 yd FG was stupid! Packers had no momentum and pinning them inside the 15 would have been better.. By the way what did Raji do??????

Your Owners was a jerk to Mr. Ed Sabol. No. Your coach thinks he’s on the commpetition comity. NO. Your fans think Beb is as good as Tom. NO. And your team isn’t as good as the Patriots. Suck in that! This makes up for everything that’s ever gone wrong in my life or ever could!!! Hahahahaha burn in bleep steelers fans. Hahahahahahaha

  26. cup1981 says: Feb 6, 2011 10:23 PM

    Dear Packer,

    You are welcome…

    Signed,
    Rashard Mendenhall

Wow, he seems to love fumbling at key moments of the game. Great back, but damn you Mendenhall. Roethlisberger looked like trash until after the 2 minute warning in the first half.

Lastly, WTF was Bruce Arians thinking with those play calls with under 2 minutes in the fourth quarter? Take the middle of the field and get first downs, they are NOT going to let you go deep moron.

  27. secdominance says: Feb 6, 2011 10:25 PM

not really. Rodgers is great but if he was thrown into the fire the way Alex Smith was as a rookie with the 49ers organization at the time, we have no idea how he turns out.

  28. 8man says: Feb 6, 2011 10:25 PM

Statistically you were the better team. You passed. You ran. And you coughed it up like a cat hurls a hairball.

    How’d that taste?

Now the Steelers fans have nothing to look forward to but go back to their miserable city called Pittsburgh.

  30. joerevs300 says: Feb 6, 2011 10:31 PM

The two key plays in this game was Mendenhall’s fumble when the Steelers had all the momentum and were driving, down 21-17 in GB territory, which GB turned into a TD and a 28-17 lead.

The other was the Steelers having GB 3rd and 10 and giving up the same route for the 3rd time to the Packers, with Jennings getting out to midfield and allowing the Packers to burn some critical clock and score to force the Steelers to get a TD to win.

All the credit to Green Bay…they had to basically play elimination football for 6 weeks, and they won the Super Bowl.

Maybe all teams should just be happy to be the #6 seed? Steelers, Giants and now Packers in the past 5 years.

  35. secdominance says: Feb 6, 2011 10:43 PM

not hating on Rodgers. The guy’s great, I’ve been a big fan of his since he was at Cal. However, you can’t just change a person’s career path and think it turns out the same way. Rodgers had time to sit back and learn. If he gets thrown in as a rookie in San Fran, he has no WRs and Mike Nolan as head coach (Nolan & Rodgers didn’t get along that’s one of the reasons they passed on him). So you have a coach who doesn’t back the QB and no WRs. Who knows if all the losing kills his confidence? Its all speculation to say they whiffed on Rodgers.

Now, all that being said, Alex Smith isn’t the guy and we need to move on and get a better QB in the Draft

So sick and tired about hearing about Big Ben being a HOF qb. He put the Steelers in a terrible hole tonight with two picks that led to scores. He was overthrowing receivers all night inside a dome. He had the lowest qb rating of any qb to win a Super Bowl. He was mediocre in last Super Bowl against Cards. People remember the last drive, but the big play was a small crossing pattern that Holmes busted wide open. His game against NE in 04 was horrible. He has made 1 pro bowl. He is a good qb, not a great qb, and certainly does not meet the HOF definition of dominant player at his position in his era.

NO HOF FOR BEN! (yet!!! he can change that obviously).

When they say defense wins championships, they mean it. Defensive touchdowns were the difference in the last three games lost by Chicago, Baltimore and Pittsburgh. They all lost by a TD or less – and the difference were those defensive touchdowns.

Well, your Stillers ARE going to “go” — right straight back to SandBlasterVille with their tails between their legs. See what an honest set of refs can do? ((Unlike the embarrassing jokes of 2005 and 2008)) PITTSBURGH SUCKS!!!!!

  42. mataug says: Feb 6, 2011 11:22 PM

And that’s why we love this game. Young team comes out firing on all cylinders, then looks like crumbling when it loses a key veteran player but makes one final stop to evade the more experienced team.

Mr. Roger Goodell, it would be very nice of you if I find football on my TV when I switch it on after labor day.
