Mike Florio already threw cold water on rumors that ESPN commentator Jon Gruden might replace Andy Reid as Eagles head coach.

The Eagles have responded with a bucket of ice-cold H20.

“Early this morning we have received several inquiries regarding rumors regarding Andy Reid and Jon Gruden,” reads the team’s statement. “This was simply a rumor and there is no basis to it at all. It is simply not true.”

The Eagles have also denied discussing an assistant coaching role with Gruden.

Yeah, he’s interviewing for our assistant special teams coach job,” joked an Eagles spokesman to Geoff Mosher of the Wilmington News Journal.

The rumor started on the Facebook page of ex-Eagles fullback Kyle Eckel.

Eckel hasn’t been a member of the Eagles’ organization since September of 2009.

  1. This coming from the same organization who told us that they weren’t trading McNabb, that Kolb would be the starter, and that McDermott would remain as d-coordinator. Excuse me if I choose not to believe the Eagles here.

  2. (a) It wouldn’t bother me at all.
    (b) With their recent history, how can anyone possibly believe the eagles no matter what they say?
    (c) It’s not gonna happen.

  3. If they were purely rumors why even respond with a statement say nothing at all and let it fade away? The idea that they feel obligated to make a statement tells me there my be something there?

  4. The Eagles released a statement denying it.. oh boy, I’m a little worried now. Chucky needs to stay the hell away from my team! There’s also no way the birds hire anyone who could potentially replace Reid, unless he really does accept a FO position with the team.

  5. This whole rumor thing was so completely ludicrous… But man, did I jump up and do a celebratory dance or what when I first got wind of it! Gruden isn’t the answer, but Id take him in a heartbeat. Fire The Walrus!

  6. “Eckel hasn’t been a member of the Eagles’ organization since September of 2009.”

He was actually on the team? Now that’s news.

This is an epic case of someone artificially generating a rumor to drive more traffic to their website with some half baked theory.

  7. really, a statement from Reid is supposed to be trusted at all? Yes and politicians always tell the truth.

  8. Hey you Eagle and Reid haters, as an Eagle fan, biased of course, I happy as hell Andy Reid is our coach. We could do a hell of a lot worse. Just look at some of the coaches around the league. Philly is in the best of times right now. Just check out the Phillies, Flyers and Eagles. Your city would kill for that. I know, I know, Philly wasn’t always like that. Last time we had it so good was in 1983 when we went to the world series, super bowl, Stanley Cup Finals and NBA finals in consecutive seasons.

  9. I absolutely HATE The Eagles,,but with Gruden…I would only just hate them…..another year and no Super Bowl for the eagles life is sooo sweet…..it’s all about KARMA….with the rude obnoxious, vial, rude Eagle fans dribbling pus out of their mouths at evry turn…I love whenanother year goes by an no Lombardi…..
Cry Eagles cry,,,on the road to misery…..
    They need Gruden

  10. Phillies and The Flyers are respected,,,,,the Eagles are not…..why / their obnoxous fans…case closed…
    Go Phillies……Go Flyers…….Eagles can rot…

  11. “The way Andy is selecting coaches, he would probably make Gruden the defensive backs coach.”

Considering DB coach was Gruden’s position when he worked with Reid in Green Bay that’s not really a stretch.

Sounds like little nicky dicky is a bandwagon steeler. I would love to k know which bandwagon football team u root for.

  13. Common sense tells you Gruden wont replace Reid THIS YEAR however where are the denials from Gruden that he wasnt in Philadelphia last week. If he was at NFL Films, as a local radio voice suggested (your buddy) then I guess the hotels in Mt Laural were all booked up. How did he get back to Dallas without being recognized at the airport? Private Jet from a minority owner? The spin continues. They both have the same agent, the Eagles could have spoken to Gruden to inquire on his future or how Reid could get over the top. These conversations would NOT violate the Rooney Rule and the agent need not be told. Hmmm. Juan Castillo the DC could be coincidentally interviewed next year to meet the Rooney Rule with no intention of getting the job. Just food for thought. Both Reid and Gruden are under contract which ESPN will not let him out of. It makes more sense to buy out Reid for one year then two. Hmmmm. And you think you only have sources.

  14. The Eagles won’t win a Super bowl under Reid no matter how long he stays there. He just don’t have what it takes to win a Super bowl.
