Minnesota Court of Appeals rules in favor of NFL in StarCaps case

More than two and a half years after Minnesota defensive linemen Kevin Williams and Pat Williams first failed a drug test for ingesting a supplement called StarCaps, the NFL may finally be able to suspend the two players.

Greg Aiello of the NFL and Brian Murphy of the St. Paul Pioneer Press both pass along word Tuesday that the Minnesota Court of Appeals has affirmed the lower court ruling in favor of the NFL.   In theory, Murphy points out, this should allow the league to follow through on four game suspensions for the players.

The news should also affect Saints defensive end Will Smith.

Frankly, we can’t say anything for certain when it comes to this winding case, which has basically been dragging on since 2008.  Maybe someone with a law degree that understands the issue better can chime in later.

UPDATE: Florio tells me there is still one more level the case could travel to: Minnesota Supreme Court.

  1. Is Pat Williams even going to play next year? Kevin Williams was a shell of his former self this last season….maybe the NFL should forget the suspensions and punish the Vikings like a college team. Take away their Division Championship from the time the cheaters were playing with the team.

    The Bears still suck.
The Vikings are the worst franchise in NFL history.
The Lombardi Trophy is back in its rightful place.

So ask Pervy — he knows everything.

  3. Well viking fans, look at it this way: You have no where to go but up.

Geez… that franchise took a beating this past season.

  4. is it wierd to say that the Vikings should look at the job the Lions have done recently to start rebuilding. i have a urky feeling that the Vikings will have the toughest time in the NFC north trying to withstand the strike/lockout if there is one….

  5. The Vikings will be rebuilding the next few years anyhow, so this really doesn’t matter. This franchise really seems to be in trouble. Embarrased time after time with player issues, coach issues, off field issues, stadium issues, fan issues, you name it.

  6. Wow, it just gets worse for the Vikings.

I almost feel bad for pervy. After all, he’ll never know what it’s like to be a fan of a Super Bowl champion team.

    Almost.

If you take the vikings divison title, since saints DE will smith is being charge with the same thing, you gotta take the saints superbowl title away too

  8. Who cares at this point? They didn’t gain any advantage by having them play last year, so what’s the disadvantage of having them suspended?

  9. They should still be suspended if only that token justice is done. The Minnesota courts, full of elected judges, cheated just like the Minnesota players. Similarly, the court and the players did win the battle with their cheating and obfuscation, yet the players, the judges, the coaches and their jeering fanbase, all lost the war.

At this point it should mean more to the Saints than the Vikes. The Saints find themselves in the middle of a tough NFC South, and losing their DE for four games could impact them.

The Vikes are in rebuilding/transition mode until they find a capable QB and while they may surprise, the chances are that the loss of one or both Williams’ won’t significantly impact their playoff chances in 2011, let alone a SB title.

Hey guys we should also totes take away all the Pittsburgh Steelers SB wins in the 70s, they were all roiding!

This is the worst of Packer fans, smug miscreants who carry some false sense of entitlement into the real world because their football team is SO HISTORIC.

Go outside kid, stop playing Super Nintendo.

  12. Packer heaven:
    =============
    1. Super Bowl victory.
    2. Beat the Bears in Chicago to go to the Super Bowl.
    3. Vikings QB situation is completely unsettled.
    4. StarCaps case upheld by MN Court of Appeals.
    5. Bears are getting older and Cutler isn’t better, but Lovie’s going to get another extension.
    6. Lions don’t know what they have in Stafford.

  13. Also, it still baffles me how people think that the Vikings going 6-10 last season was somehow the worst season in NFL history.

It wasn’t…and with chilly gone, it won’t happen again.

  15. The players will get a “stay” of the ruling pending appeal to the Minnesota Supreme Court. So this ruling is practically meaningless, except that it shows at least 2 courts have agreed that the NFL has the better argument.

  16. I heard Adrian peterson is going to fake a retirement so the Vikings will release him. He will then sign with Green Bay because it gives him the best shot at a Super Bowl. Sound familiar

Don’t feel sorry for me.The Vikings will be in the playoffs next season. I do feel for your woman though. She hates your affair with that oven warmed Foam Cheesehead Hat.

  18. Well, they sure learned their lesson, hey?

The message to kids here is: If you get caught cheating, those with wealth can delay things until the punishment will no longer matter.

I hope the ‘Williams Wall’ was throwing back a few ice-cold Star Caps as the Packers were hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

The fact that you consider these two things “heaven” shows how amazingly pathetic you are. This news actually made your day, while the rest of us could absolutely care less. Enjoy your life big guy! It’s pretty impressive.

  21. They bought a legal over-the-counter product. The product in question (StarCaps) failed to list an NFL banned substance on its ingredient list. Which is a violation Starcaps admitted to.
How are players responsible for taking something not listed on the label?

  22. Aarnitout; you must be smoking crack with you mother and stepdad? Told you to stay aways from that stuff, it’s gotten u dilusional, wait WI people are dilusional crackheads! HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! Good one, I didn’t realize all 4 teams from one division could make the playoffs! At least you’re staying positive, despite the fact that your team is terrible and will be terrible for the next 4-5 years (at least).

  25. The Vikings suck. They have always sucked.
You are 0-4 in the Big Game.
50 years of Greatness was the motto this year. What exactly have they been great at in 50 years?

The Walker trade? The Boat Party? Being able to tell time during the draft? Hiring former Packers? Kow Towing to an aged Diva who didnt like training camp?

Oh but hey ya beat the Pack twice in 09…there ya go…hold on to that.

Hudson a third world country? lol Why drive all the way over there when you have Brooklyn Park in your metro area. I love how you MSP morons think your 3rd to LA and NYC. Look around, you have more rednecks and booger eating morons than Nebraska.

Do what you do best…let another Pro team leave your godforesaken state.

The STATE of Hockey…..oops they let their hockey team move to Dallas.

Where are the Lakes in LA? Oh thats right…

Face it Mn Fans….you are in for another 50 years of Greatness…

Meanwhile..the Lombardi is back where it belongs…you can travel to Green Bay is see what one looks like.

  26. Keep hating packer fan on a team dat 0-4 in da SB how pathetic get a life n git off Arod nuttz seriously da vikes b fine it been rough for us this year now go bow down to god rodger lol he just a human but in green bay he cheesus lmao

  27. You would think the Vikings would recognize that justice needs to be served if they ever hope to get out of last place. Fight it as you wish, but the franchise will never turn around without a proper level of respect for the rules.
