Thank you, Coach. These 18 game decisions are based on the fact that season ticket holders are justifiably angry about paying full price for exhibition games. That doesn't translate into more football. It should mean reducing ticket prices for exhibition games.

These decisions are made by people who have never played a 16 game schedule. The wear and tear on the players will only be made worse.

I’ve never seen anyone on PFT flail about as desperately as HobartBaker in the hopeless attempt to type something funny.

Hobart, you need to just accept that witty observations and clever repartee are never going to be ‘your thing’.

Try something else, or at least, try it somewhere else.

===================

I really don't have anything to add, I just thought it as so dead-on accurate, that it was worth repeating...

Fans don't want 18 games. What everyone in the NFL wants is more revenue. It is easier though to generate more revenue by adding one playoff game than two regular season games. And with early round playoff games generating 19.4 rating vice regular season ratings of 11.4, it may be just as much, if not more lucrative to add the playoff game. And with the four playoff games giving you 12 hours of TV, this compares favorably with a typical NFL weekend giving 9 hour of TV on Sunday and 3 more on Monday,

I am with the majority that want to keep it the way it is. After all that's happening with the labor talks, keeping it at 16 would give us a much better chance of getting things in order so that we can have a season.

Plus if you add 2 more games you may as well throw out the record books for all these years, because it's a completely unfair advantage. It just wouldn't be fair. A lot of us are proud with the records of the great players that set them, so it's still at least a challenge and a huge accomplishment when they are broken. But it would be too easy as someone mentioned for a RB to get 2500 yards in a season. or a QB to throw for 5000+ yards perhaps too.

McCarthy doesn’t want to push things too far. Packer owners only have so many fingers and toes to count on.

You do realize Green Bay has 112,158 owners right??? By my math that is 2,243,160 Fingers and Toes to count on... Im sure they can figure it out...

The Casual fan WANTS 18 games.
It’s coming. And there is nothing you or this site or the pundits can do about it.

You can thumbs down this all you want, but it’s not going to stop 18 games from happening.

I like the idea of 17 games with 3 preseason games and an extra bye week.

An extra round of playoffs is an interesting thought. Perhaps some sort of at-large play in weekend?

Get more games on TV and they will get their revenues. Sorry Dish Network, you might lose out if that happens.

With player saftey being a major concern.., how come there isn't more talk about a 14 game season.., or maybe 12? All these guys getting hurt.., it seems like the logical solution is less football, not more. Cut the TV contracts down a little.., save the networks some money.., a little less revenue for the teams.., players take a little less, to ensure safety.., it's all for the greater good.., yes?

Nobody really wants an 18 game season. Lots of people would like to see two less preseason games. What owners and players really want is more revenue which they can get by televising more games. They can get this in a number of ways:
1. Add 4 more teams to the playoffs and spread the first round of the playoffs over two weekends. This does away with the big advantage that 4 teams get with the first round bye by requiring all teams to play the same number of playoff games. Coaches will love this as getting in the playoffs tends to ensure job security. Fans will love this as they get another weekend of high intensity dramatic playoff football. This year, two more 10-6 teams in the Giants and Buccaneers would have made the playoffs along with a 9-7 team (San Diego) and a 8-8 team (Jacksonville). In a year when a 7-9 team made the playoffs and a #6 seed won the Super Bowl, I think no one would have considered adding those four teams as somehow watering down the playoffs.
2.	Make the Thursday night football package last all season. Eight more televised games means more revenue.
3.	Add a second bye week. In season vacations are popular with coaches and players alike and while it can be tough on the schedulers, you get an additional week of football to televise.
Do all three of these and the league will generate more revenue that an additional two weeks of regular season would. Cut out the two preseason games, and shorten the allowable off season programs, and I think you have a bunch of happy coaches and players alike.

jp -

Your ticket prices are totally unrelated to the cost of the product on the field. The owners make most of their money from TV and merchandise. Our ticket costs are a small drop in the bucket. The only reason the owners care about even having 80,000 fans in the building is that they are 'extras' for the broadcast that reaches millions.

Your ticket price represents the most they can charge you without fans revolting. But it isn't a primary profit driver (unless you pay a PSL, which paid for the stadium costs).

I love how the owners lament the preseason tickets as being a problem for the fan. But, uh, who made the fans buy those in the first place?

Just think... there may not be a season next year because greedy owners are wanting 2 extra games a season to help boost revenue, yet- they don't want to pay to protect the players. It's the players with their lives on the line and the fans that support the industry, that provide for the NFL's existence. Period. So here we are... at the brink of an NFL lockout- and who takes the trophy? A community owned, not for profit organization known as the Green Bay Packers. The only team without a greedy billionaire breathing down a G.M.'s neck... the only team where a single person doesn't stand to profit from a new labor agreement heavily tilted in the owner's favor.

That's why the "G" on their helmet stands for "Greatness".

As a side note... did you know that Pete Rozelle had it written into the NFL's by-laws in 1960 that no other NFL team shall be permitted to structure itself after the Green Bay Packers??

I honestly think 16 regular season games is too much. I'd be fine with 14.
