Seahawks assistant loses UCLA gig, possibly over Facebook comments

Seahawks secondary assistant coach Rocky Seto accepted a verbal offer to become UCLA’s next defensive coordinator last week.  He was so excited, he had to tell his friends and family.

And those friends and family started posting congratulations to his Facebook account.

“My intentions were not to get the news out.  Maybe I shouldn’t have told as many friends and family,” Seto told ESPNLosAngeles.com. “I was just so excited. And we were scheduled for a press conference on Wednesday.”

The press conference never happened.  UCLA coach Rick Neuheisel called the day after offering the job and rescinded the offer.  So what happened?

Scott Wolf of the LA Daily News reports that the Facebook messages “infuriated UCLA and incited a fan backlash.”   Seto was a former Pete Carroll assistant at USC.

Neuheisel wouldn’t confirm the news leaking out cost Seto the job, but he didn’t deny it either.  He needed approval from the “UCLA board of regents” and said he considered a number of factors before changing his mind.

It’s a lesson for everyone, especially in this technological age: Try to stay quiet about a new gig until a contract is signed.

  1. wow because he coached a differnt college team!
a rival, teams steal coaches all the time! ucla sucks anyway, maybe they should have tried to get harbaugh!! OMG

  2. Neuheisal is a nitwit. If Seto was the most qualified for the job, that’s who he should have hired. He shouldn’t have offered the job that day if he didn’t want the news out that day. Bartpkelly sums it up for me, what an absurd reason to rescind the offer. As the job market gets better, people are going to start realizing that if you are losing a job because of social media postings, it may not have been a great situation for you anyway. Right now, because of the economy, we let all these HR wonks tell us what awful people we are for posting on social media, and that of course we deserved to lose our jobs, because they have nothing better to do than look at social profiles to ” weed out” candidates. What they don’t realize is that they ‘weed out’ talent as well; just because you are an ideal employee from an HR standpoint, doesn’t mean you’re the best guy for the job. I hope the Bruins give up 40 points a game next year with their “HR approved , prudent, never posting on social media” new guy.

  3. Does he get to keep his ‘hawks gig? Really? Thought that once you quit your job, that’s it, he stays quit.

  4. “The strange tale of Rocky Seto took a humorous turn late Tuesday night.

Seto, the front-runner for the UCLA defensive coordinator job, was hired by the Bruins, according to a Daily Trojan story posted online Tuesday night. The story included a text attributed to Seto, “[I] accepted the position tonight to coordinate at UCLA. Praise the Lord!”

Shortly after a text message was sent Seto by the Los Angeles Times, the quote in the Daily Trojan story mysteriously vanished. The story still reported Seto was hired, just without attribution.

A UCLA official said that no one has been hired as defensive coordinator.”

Crooked SC guy cant be trusted.

  5. That’s a hard lesson to learn.. and it’s someone with any common sense in reference to a job search should know.

“You don’t have a job unless there is a written contract in place” period

  6. its amazing how dumb people are with facebook twitter etc….. do not put anything in any electronic format ever unless you want the entire world to see and critique it…. and dont complain when you are fired, suspended, jailed, divorced due to such stupidity
