Vikings’ Ray Edwards says he’ll try boxing during the lockout

As NFL players prepare for the likelihood that the owners will lock them out next month, some are considering other means of making a living.

One such player is Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards, who says he’s going to be a professional boxer if he can’t be a professional football player. Edwards tells the Pioneer Press that he’s serious about boxing, and he’ll promote his own fights this spring if there’s not a labor deal in place.

“Then I’ll probably fight the beginning of April,” Edwards said. “I’ll start my own promotional company.”

This isn’t an idea that just occurred to Edwards; he’s been talking it up since the start of the 2010 season. The question, however, is whether it’s worth it to him, as a soon-to-be free agent, to risk an injury in the boxing ring when he’s so close to a big payday in the NFL.

Of course, if Edwards thinks we’re in for a long lockout, that payday would be a long way off.
