Report: Jets plan to let Antonio Cromartie walk

Appearing on NFL Network’s Total Access program Wednesday night, Mike Lombardi cited multiple sources to report that the Jets are likely to let free agent cornerback Antonio Cromartie walk this offseason.

According to Lombardi, the Jets are more focused on re-signing wide receivers Santonio Holmes and Braylon Edwards, whose contracts both have expired.

Cromartie likely also didn’t endear himself to Jets management by physically threatening Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck on Twitter after calling Patriots quarterback Tom Brady the NFL, and the NFL Players Association “assh-les” at various points this winter.

One thought that sprung to mind when we heard this report was that the Jets could also be gearing up for a run at free agent cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha.

According to SI’s Peter King, Asomugha “wants to play elsewhere” in 2011. Asomugha has previously stated — though seemingly jokingly — that he wanted to team up with Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis.  Raiders owner Al Davis subsequently approached Asomugha about the subject.

UPDATE: Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News is disputing Lombardi’s story.

  1. I figured they would have kept him after he played such a big part in their Super Bowl win. Oh yeah. Never mind.

  2. If the jets let cro go at least us jet fans won’t have to hear the cromartie baby jokes anymore haha. If they get Aso gnite league!!

  3. Kyle Wilson will be ready this year to take Cromarties spot. Plus I’d rather have holmes and Edwards over him anyday.

  4. yep thats it evan…nnamdi is going to go to ice cold ny , to play in the freezing cold…get real…. i would say if your pipe dream was true, it would be fun to watch revis get thrown at 20 times a game.

Once a raider always a raider.

  5. @HEYOOOOH

Yeah thats the reason he’s so outspoken and wants the league and union to get a deal done. All that child support along with living the good life he’ll go broke faster than MC Hammer.

  6. Asomugha to the Steelers.

Please for the love of god let the front office spend some money just this once.

He should take a SB pay cut and come to the team that has a weakness at the position he plays, a weakness that cost them the SB. It’s a match made in heaven.

BTW, before anyone says that’s not what cost the Steelers the SB, Jordy Nelson had 140 yards. Rodgers had 308. That is one player, on one side, that was half of the opposing QB’s output. Shut him down, or limit him to 70 yards instead, and Steelers PROBABLY win that game. Easily.

  7. Not to take away from the Packers win. Just trying to look ahead for my team and cover it’s weaknesses. Who knows, with Aso in there we might have lost by 50 because he smoked an ounce of crack before the game. You never know, any given Sunday, blah blah.

  8. Peter King is an idiot!! He has no idea where Nnamdi wants to play next year. Nnamdi is gonna play with whom ever pays him the most, period.

  9. After all the talk Rex Ryan did about how good Cromartie is?
There’s that business side of football that coaches only talk about when someone loses their job.

  10. I smell a reality show with all his baby mommas living under one roof.San diego knew what they were doing dumping this human sperm bank!

  11. ..he’ll need a boyscout or a G.P.S. to help him find his way…he’s an IDIOT!…a talented idiot – but an idiot nonetheless…

  12. “Raiders owner Al Davis recently approached Asomugha about the subject.”
if by recently you mean a year ago, then you’re right.

  13. Asomugha and Revis on the same team would be unfair.

I’m not a jets fan but I would love to see them together playing for Rex Ryan.

With 2 guys who both shut down half the field, where would teams throw it?

  14. They can talk all they want about “Bevis as a shutdown CB” and how good Cromartie played this year etc. but the Jets know what any real football fan knows……they are both more a result of the Jets pass rush. A real shutdown corner can be found in Oakland or in Denver where the rest of their defense isn’t very good but Asomugha and Bailey still shut down their guys. I would love to see Revis play on an otherwise terrible defensive team, like say….the Texans….where is is no pass rush and db’s are expected to shadow a wr for 10 seconds………In Cromartie’s case, his season went to his head and now he thinks he can talk like a stud DB and his mouth is getting him in trouble….must be related to Randy Moss.

  15. Reporter: Antonio, is it true you have 9 children by 8 different women?

    Cromartie: Yea, that be true.

Reporter: Is it also true you have four, three year olds.

Cromartie: Yea, that be true also.

Reporter: Do you know all their names?

Cromartie: Well, one is named Antonio.

    Reporter: That’s one.

Cromartie: Well, then there’s the daughter.

Reporter: The daughter isn’t a name.

    Cromartie: Go F**k yoself.

  16. Wow – steep price for the Jets….ended up giving the Chargers a 2nd Round pick for a guy who played 1 season.

    Brutal.

The Jet’s don’t have that good of a pass rush, actually. The pass rush is one of the weakest parts of their defense. And to say Revis isn’t a shutdown corner, that makes no sense. It’s been proven time and time again that Revis absolutely blankets his receivers. Just ask Reggie Wayne (1 catch 1 yard), Ochocinco, Moss, or anyone else who Revis has covered. Have you ever watched a Jets game?

  18. They traded a 2nd round pick for cromartie. Now theyre letting him go after 1 year. They really did put all their focus into winning the superbowl this year

  19. Cromartie is a good player despite what you fools on this site have to say. He’s pissed off the league. He’ll be back with the Jets, after the Jets sign all the pieces,
and for a lot less money.

  20. 2: defined as the number of years after Cromartie is done playing football that he is broke and/or being pursued for unpaid child support.

  22. Peter King is as good of an insider as anyone in the business. people get so caught up when these guys are wrong that they forget how many more times they are right. for ever Peter King wrong theres 9 rights. if he thinks Aso wants out, its probably true. and im being completely unbiased. no need to get aught up in delusional “loyalty.”

  23. The Jaguars should really try to sign this dud, I mean stud! With the lack of tackles being made by DB’s especially Rashean Mathis, who we should not forget had a lengthy hold out trying to lobby for a new contract then came out playing two hand touch last season. The Jags could really use Cromartie for the simple fact that having 8 or so kids proves that Cromartie is definitely not afraid of body contact!

  24. @thejuddstir

The Jets DON’T have a pass rush. Watch the New England playoff game, Brady had ages to throw, the coverage was that good. If it wasn’t for Revis our defense would be much, much different.
    ———————————————–
Cromartie was serviceable, he’s very athletic but he’s kind of an idiot and his refusal to hit anybody infuriates me, not to mention he seems uncoachable.

  25. I hope my Ram’s go after him. Its a win-win for the team. They shore up the defensive backfield and if his kids come to the home games then it will double the attendance

Well said the pass rush is the weakest part of the jets d. He’s a pats fan so he’s still bitter about the jets whipping his teams as* in the playoffs. Please people if you hate on revis your clueless. Watch some video on him and you will see all you need to know

  27. Don’t believe it at all, mostly because it looks like another 1st round whiff for the Jets with Kyle Wilson.

  28. @nepatriots, how can you say the jets pass rush is one of the weakest parts of that d-fense they love to bring heat on the passer and have done a solid job of it last year & this year, no they arent the best in the nfl but they are pretty darn good at it. and just for the record i hate the jets and would love to say they suck at everything but i can’t say they suck at rushing the passer

  29. @nyjalleffingday

Re: “Cromartie was serviceable, he’s very athletic but he’s kind of an idiot and his refusal to hit anybody infuiates me, not to mention he seems uncoachable.”

This is a flat out lie! AC “hits” almost anything that is on two legs, female, and doesn’t bark.

  30. Cromartie may be an idiot, but he’s an idiot that can cover, they need him back. I hope the story is wrong.

To say Revis is not a shutdown corner is crazy. Look at the guys he consistently takes out of offenses. They do have a pass rush problem though. They don’t get to the QB much without blitzing. Jason Taylor didn’t get to the QB with the frequency they had hoped, so this definitely is an area to improve. If they still had a guy like John Abraham the defense would be scary.

  31. I’m a Jet fan & season ticket holder & I’m with the guys who said the pass rush was bad this year. The d-line is below average, undersized and they had to bring pressure via blitz packages. The defense as a whole was better in 2009 than 2010. Rex worked out some game plans that worked out or they wouldn’t have gotten as far as they did. Cro can go, he holds too often, doesn’t tackle, and has become a distraction. Jets need a nose tackle and dominant end.

  32. Cromartie likely also didn’t endear himself to Jets management by physically threatening Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck on Twitter after calling Patriots quarterback Tom Brady the NFL, and the NFL Players Association “assh-les” at various points this winter.

Please ……. the Jets suddenly developed morals and a conscience?

    Right.

  33. The Jets base package pass rush is nothing great. They get results when they mix in zone blitzes and an unanticipated/unblocked rusher gets through.

Regardless, Revis is an excellent cover corner. He’s always anticipating correctly, he’s instinctive, and has the athletic ability to recover if somebody gets the jump on him. He very rarely gets caught unaware or out of position. He’s a smart ball player and consistently on his game.

He is very good with or without a consistent pass rush.

  34. Cromartie is planning for the lockout in 2028 and he’s gonna have his own 53 man roster… all of His kids.We need to start a pledge drive to sterilize Cromartie in 2011!!! He had that manywhen he was working and now with a lockout, Watchout.

Do you remember Rex’s mouth making a mess in NY talking up Revis? Leading Revis to hold out for top CB pay because HIS coach said he pretty much deserved ownership of the Gold Vault @ Ft. Knox! What do you think will happen if the Jets have Revis and Asomugha? I know Rex has a foot fettish but really, how many feet do you think would fit in one mans mouth?

“Kyle Wilson will be ready this year to take Cromarties spot. Plus I’d rather have holmes and Edwards over him anyday.”

You have got to be sniff’n glue.

On behalf of Pats fans everywhere I hope they play Wilson as well.

  37. @ ny82jy

I HAVE watched Revis play. He clutches, grabs and holds to get an advantage on almost every single play. He gets away with a lot of stuff that should be called. Since he is considered a great player, the networks usually have an iso cam on him. Next time, YOU watch, and you’ll see what I mean. In the playoff game against the Pats, on 2 Branch drops, Revis should have been called for illegal contact on both plays. No flag on either. He gets away with a lot!

That being said. Don’t get your Joe Namath panties in a bunch. I think Revis is good, but he’s pumped up a little more than what he actually is. Nnamdi is better. I think McCourty has a CHANCE to be better.
