Perhaps the most talented group of franchise players in league history continues to get better.

The Chiefs designated defensive end Tamba Hali as their franchise player on Wednesday. The move was widely expected.

“Tamba is a key contributor to our football team, and we have a tremendous amount of respect for him both personally and professionally,” G.M. Scott Pioli said. “We want Tamba to remain a member of the Chiefs, and we will continue to work together with the hope of reaching a long-term agreement.”

We’d rank Hali among the five most valuable defensive ends in football. While the Chiefs dealt Jared Allen in his prime under former G.M. Carl Peterson, we fully expect Hali to get his huge contract in Kansas City.
