One vote for Chad Greenway as franchise player

The Vikings have a lot of difficult decisions to make this offseason. The first one: Do they use the franchise tag on linebacker Chad Greenway or wide receiver Sidney Rice?

(They could choose to not use the tag, but that seems unlikely at this point.)

Sid Hartman of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune says to expect the Vikings to tag Greenway. It’s unclear if Hartman is reporting this will happen, thinks it might happen, or thinks it should happen. Knowing Hartman’s history a little, we suspect it’s a combination of all three.

We’re starting to wonder if the Vikings could try to use multiple tags, like the Eagles. They could use the transition tag on Rice, and the franchise tag on Greenway.

Since we don’t really know the rules to the post-CBA world, it makes some sense for teams to use every tool available right now to retain a player’s rights.

The Vikings should still be able to rescind the tag if they chose to after an agreement, as long as their players didn’t sign their one-year tender in the meantime.
