We’ve said it before, but this crop of franchise tag players is far better than any group in recent memory.
On Friday, the franchise tag team added an eighth member and another great pass rusher. Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports that the Steelers placed the franchise tag on linebacker Lamarr Woodley.
Pittsburgh traditionally doesn’t use the tag, but clearly they weren’t that close to a long-term deal for Woodley and couldn’t risk him becoming an unrestricted free agent.
He’s arguably the most valuable player on the defense because he’s the biggest game-changer on the defense that will be under 30 years entering next year. While Woodley doesn’t have a Defensive MVP award, he figures to get a deal close to or better than James Harrison’s six-year extension from 2009.

Shocker!! Free agency is definatly not gonna be as exciting this season..
I respect Woodly’s game a bunch, as the Steelers always seem to be great @ getting solid LBs.
In my personal opinion though, the best under 30 in the AFC, totally, but I think Matthews being the runner up of the DPOY, is probably the better choice for game changers on defense.
Good, now hey Rooneys…
Release that death grip you have on the purse strings for once and go get Nnamdi Asomugha.
Thanks for the breaking news. Apparently I haven’t read the other 10 posts where you said this was going to happen.
I’m actually scared for the caliber of PFT posts if/when the league goes on strike.
Welcome back Wood!

He was talking about Woodley being the MVP of the Steelers’ defense, because he is the biggest game changer that is under the age of 30.
fair enough didn’t see, on *the* defense.
Question is when are they going to cut Aaron Smith. He is the Steelers Bob Sanders.
No shock. He’s earned his payday.
