in re: the Browns.
This fish rots from the head. From Randy Lerner who likes to rub elbows with English aristocracy while bally-hooing his Aston Villa soccer team we learn that absentee ownership doesn't work; he can hire any coach or president or GM he wants, but his empty throne in Cleveland leaves the Browns, well...empty. And then to bring in BigMike who is fattening his retirement on the blue collar fans is criminal. Through his own megalomania, he allowed Mangini to screw up one whole year instead of making the decisions he was hired and paid handsomely to do. He has invested heavily in cronyism in order to have a scapegoat when the time of his failure comes.

I have no love for this new regime. Fishes rot from the head; but this fat man who crawled up on the throne of Lerner and proclaimed himself emperor
really has no clothes.

gooboy6 says: Nothing like good old buddy-buddy trades between Chiefs-Patriots, Seventh round pick for Page 2 years later!!! Page was a starter ! As a Chiefs fan I’m appalled until you realize we STOLE Cassell and Vrabel for 2nd round pick. Pioli was paying Belicheck back for that one with Page deal

You may be right - of course at the time of the Cassel/Vrabel trade Cassel was still a bit of a question mark. Although some thought a 1st round pick was in order we've seen trades before and subsequently that suggest that the 2nd round pick was fair.

As far as including Vrabel, the Pats weren't going to pay him $4.5 million - he wasn't worth it and they needed the cap space. Cut him and he goes to the Jets. Trade him, he gets his full $4.5 million and is out of the AFC East - and Cassel has a friend in the locker room as well.

Although the Pats could have kept Cassel, Belichick helps himself when players see he won't hold them hostage and pay them peanuts. Letting it be known that playing for the Pats is a good way to jump start your career will bring the Pats more good players at cheaper "show me" contract prices.

Overall all the trades can be considered a "win/win" for both organizations. That's the hallmark of a good trade.

"An argument that ownership is to blame for the state of affairs for the Browns."

Holmgren's not perfect but he's bound to make better decisions than Lerner.

Look at Lerner's last move as defacto GM to hire Mangini...

"Hmmmm - let's see, I need a really good coach to turn my team around. Let's see who's out there. Hey look! A guy who was just fired by his team, who's bound to embarrass me later by revealing organizational secrets to his next employer, who no other team even wants to interview.

Better lock this guy up with a multi-year multi-million dollar deal QUICK!
