The Vikings have made the first big decision in an offseason full of questions.
The team announced they will use the franchise tag on linebacker Chad Greenway, quickly confirming reports by Josina Anderson and Adam Schefter.
“Chad’s an important part of our team and his play speaks for itself. He’s productive and has continued to improve each year he has been in the NFL,” said coach Leslie Frazier.
Wide receiver Sidney Rice was believed to be a candidate for the tag, but Greenway was clearly valued more. Jason La Canfora of NFL Network reports the team doesn’t plan to use the transition tag on Rice as of now.
Using the tag on Greenway makes a strong statement about the steady linebacker. The franchise number for linebackers is expected to be close to $10 million, which is a big number considering the Tampa 2 defense helps to inflate stats for linebackers. Greenway hasn’t made a Pro Bowl isn’t a huge factor on passing downs, although he is seen as a team leader.
Minnesota will likely try to lower Greenway’s base salary by reaching a long-term deal after a new CBA is reached.
