John Fox says Kyle Orton is Broncos’ starter

Getty Images

In a somewhat surprising statement at the NFL Scouting Combine, Broncos coach John Fox named his starting quarterback: Kyle Orton.

“As far as I’m concerned, he’s under contract and he’s the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos,” Fox said of Orton, according to multiple reporters passing along his comments on Twitter. “Kyle Orton is our starter.”

Fox downplayed the possibility that Orton could be traded.

That comment comes less than a week after Orton said he had barely heard from Fox and had no idea what his future held in Denver. Those comments suggested that Fox wasn’t overly enthusiastic about keeping Orton around.

But this week’s report that Tim Tebow doesn’t have much support in Denver suggests that Orton won’t be losing his job to last year’s first-round draft pick. Fox’s comments today would seem to confirm that.

Of course, it’s entirely possible that Fox will feel differently six or seven months from now (or whenever the NFL season starts) than he does at the moment. But as of right now, Fox is saying that Orton, not Tebow, is his guy.

Bad idea. Orton is NOT the future in Denver. Tebow is going to be at the very least a better QB than Orton – especially if a new labor deal is reached and he has the benefit of a full off season as a starter.

I hope Fox is just trying to up some trade value for Orton.

Atta boy Johnny. Way to remove any competition. Over rated bum of a coach.

  3. heyooooh says: Feb 24, 2011 11:27 AM

WWJFD? Make Kyle Orton his starter.

  4. 305hurricane says: Feb 24, 2011 11:27 AM

Fox is trying to drive up price for Orton/ increase demand. Tebow will start week one mark my words.

  5. sterilizecromartie says: Feb 24, 2011 11:28 AM

Chiefs, Chargers, and Raiders fan should be thrilled at this news. So should fantasy owners as Orton will still throw for his usual 3 4th quarter garbage time TDs after the Broncos fall behind 31-3.

  6. joemontanawasthegreatest says: Feb 24, 2011 11:30 AM

All a smokescreen to make people think they are considering taking Newton, forcing a tradeup.

  7. damnvarmint says: Feb 24, 2011 11:36 AM

All this means is that John Fox is confident there will be a strike this year. So technically, Fox is saying that Orton will be the starter on a team that isn’t even going to play. I wonder what John knows that we don’t!

  8. fin72 says: Feb 24, 2011 11:37 AM

I wouldn’t be surprised if John Fox gets struck by lightning in the next few days.

  9. r8rsfan says: Feb 24, 2011 11:38 AM

Any qualified NFL coach would choose Orten over Teblows. Cue the hate from the donk fans. The only folks you hear clammering for Tebow to start are fans, haven’t heard or read one statement from an NFL head coach – ANY – saying the golden boy should be a starter at QB. The only snap he should be taking is the one from the long snapper on field goals and PAT’s.

  10. broncfanor says: Feb 24, 2011 11:40 AM

If this is true I honestly hope they cancel the 2011 season. As a Bronco fan I CANNOT stomach another season of Ordinary Orton.

  11. philbirds says: Feb 24, 2011 11:43 AM

I know the wins weren’t there but is Orton really that bad? I don’t even remember seeing the Broncos on the Redzone channel this year.

  12. whatever82 says: Feb 24, 2011 11:44 AM

Or we could accept that coaches are kind of like politicians…’cause Fox goes on to say that today Orton is the starter but he can’t predict who is the starter for week 1.

In other words may it go to the best man.

  13. phinheads says: Feb 24, 2011 11:45 AM

orton isnt the starter. He’s eye candy though…the guy makes passes and doesnt lose games. He’s trade bait.

  14. tobyward says: Feb 24, 2011 11:52 AM

Shocker. Anyone who has followed the Panthers the last 9 years knew this was coming. Foxy LOVES vets. Especially at QB. See Peete, Rodney and Delhomme, Jake. I tweeted the day Foxy was announced that he would be the death of Tebow. Stay tuned….

  15. nineleveninsidejob says: Feb 24, 2011 11:54 AM

Orton isn’t special but he’s better than a lot of other QB’s (Including Tebow)

  16. thereisalwaysnextyear says: Feb 24, 2011 11:56 AM

Whenever a coach makes a statement like that there is ALWAYS an understood “for now.” at the end of the sentence. For now.

  17. broncfanor says: Feb 24, 2011 11:57 AM

And were supposed to listen to a Raiders fan on Tebow right?

  18. sdchargers25 says: Feb 24, 2011 12:00 PM

wow john fox is an idiot. …tebow was a beast last year, won me my fantasy championship 🙂

  19. jc1958cool says: Feb 24, 2011 12:04 PM

orton is the starter, cause tebow will get traded and denver will take newton! orton is better than tebow anyway!

  20. broncostebow15 says: Feb 24, 2011 12:07 PM

Orton sucks and he definitely isn’t working as hard as Tebow day in and day out. Tebow is gaining on him everyday. By August, Tebow will be way better than Orton hears a boo.

  21. broncostebow15 says: Feb 24, 2011 12:10 PM

Even Champ Baliey in an interview said he would like to see Tebow start. I think Orton started whining, which caused Fox to say this to keep his trade value up. If Orton kept whining and said that he wanted out of Denver, he’d barely be worth a 7th round pick with all of that money McDaniels signed him to next season.

Scratch out “kinda”. In the offseason, especially this offseason coaches are politicians.
Tebow sells jerseys. Energizes his fan base, along with his teammates and oh yeah…HE WINS FOOTBALL GAMES.
I urge all Tebow haters to listen to Tebow Mic’d up on soundfx against the Texans. I don’t hear that passion from Jason Campbell ( raiders fans).Oh by the way he WON the game after being down 17 points. Don’t see a lot of that coming out of Mr. Campbell either.

  23. gatorfan1 says: Feb 24, 2011 12:16 PM

NOW that was funny….can you just imagine how many people WOULD be in church the Sunday after if this really happened…lol…

  24. awdlmd says: Feb 24, 2011 12:19 PM

There are a ton of so called Broncos fans who are really just Tebow fans. They expose themselves when they say they will quit supporting the team if The Chosen One doesn’t start.

  25. fastrichie says: Feb 24, 2011 12:19 PM

Kyle Orton is the “new Steve DeBerg” …

Not a bad QB, but not quite good enough to keep the team from looking for a better QB.

  26. 7pints says: Feb 24, 2011 12:29 PM

ummm, John. Not a great way to endear yourself to Bronco fans. For your sake I really hope you are smokescreening.

  27. whatsitlikehere says: Feb 24, 2011 12:33 PM

He’ll be a Viking next year for a 5th round pick

  28. brutus9448 says: Feb 24, 2011 12:34 PM

fox is a smart man. Everyone can see the tebow is not an NFL QB right now and may never be

  29. broncfanor says: Feb 24, 2011 12:35 PM

You can be a Broncos fan and NOT support Orton. As a matter of fact I find you even more of a fan for realizing Orton SUCKS and will NEVER take Denver anywhere.

  30. biggerballz says: Feb 24, 2011 12:36 PM

ortons not the problem in denver, it’s the defense! trade tebow!

  31. mnnightowl says: Feb 24, 2011 12:39 PM

I don’t know why people would think he’s blowing smoke. Fox has a strong track record of favoring vets over young talent, to his demise in Carolina I’d argue.

  32. r8rsfan says: Feb 24, 2011 12:43 PM

Tebow energizes a desperate fan base and sells jerseys to religious radicals. You won’t hear any Raiders fans calling Jason Campbell the savior or buying any of his gear so your comparison doesn’t wash. Unless you want to compare when the two played against each other last season and Campbell won. So maybe the statement that all he does is win games needs an asterisk that reads “except against the Raiders”. BTW – glad to see you resigned Bailey because we have owned that guy ever since Jerry Porter burned him for 3 TD’s in a snowstorm. Jerry freaking Porter!

  33. tucknrolle says: Feb 24, 2011 12:47 PM

I don’t think there is anything wrong with keeping a veteran who plays at an average level while you groom the QB of the future. You know Tebow has been busting his tail to become a better passer and won’t make a big stink about developing on the sidelines. They are not going to be very good next year so why let Tim take a beating.

  34. getweird4u says: Feb 24, 2011 12:54 PM

Thats too bad would love to have him in cincy palmer for orton str8 up

  35. patmcrotch says: Feb 24, 2011 1:01 PM

Denver, welcome to John Fox football. We had to sit through too many years of Jake Delhomme. Now it looks like he has taken his decision making abilities with him to Denver.

Get ready for years of frustration at a coach who is loyal to a bad QB.

For all of you who thinks he is doing this to generate trade value, forget it. This is just the way he is. He NEVER had competition at QB in Carolina. He will sit on an average or below average QB his entire career.

  36. 305hurricane says: Feb 24, 2011 1:02 PM

Im a phin fan, but I can promos you this, Tebow will destroy the raiders for years to come. Even when you move into your fancy new L.A. stadium.

P.s. Desperate fanbase…..Ill check Forbes again but Im pretty sure denver is in the top ten in every category year-in-year-out. Oakland was 23rd it think. ( Referring to overall profit which is predicated on fanbase )
Oakland sucks. Denver is cool. Bottom line.

  37. 305hurricane says: Feb 24, 2011 1:04 PM

OH yeah. Champ Bailey owns your garbage receivers. Denvers pass rush sucks and often leaves Bailey out in the desert.

doggz109 says:”Tebow is going to be at the very least a better QB than Orton”

How so? I dont know if anyone noticed but the Broncos problems werent at QB last year. The only reason Tebow played at all was because the season was in the drain, Orton had a very good season for the most part.

  39. titsburgfeelers says: Feb 24, 2011 1:24 PM

I know its weird for Raider Fans to here a head coach make a decision on who the Qb will be on a football team and not some Owner that can’t even Decide who the coach is Going to be every year. I would think You Raider IbomiNation FanS would be the woNs calling For that second pick to take CaM newton. I saw your Black Hole fans sweating when first time starter Ran that 40 yard Td. Give the Boy time and he will Be fine and the raiders will still be looking for another head coach!

  40. davedascenzo says: Feb 24, 2011 1:27 PM

Hey Bronco Fan !!! Good Luck with that !!! Tebow better run out of town if he wants any chance being a winner at the pro level. Fox can coach up a defense and suck the life out of an offense.

This is the guy that struck lighting with Jake Delhomme for 2 magical seasons. When the offensive underachieved it was all blamed on Dan Henning for “conservative play calling”. The reality is it was Fox calling the plays and riding Jake way too long. Remember the Cardinal playoff game? The the same act in the Eagle game. By the way, Henning went on to implement the “Wildcat” in Miami, it was not him making those conservative play calls in Carolina.

  41. dkms2k says: Feb 24, 2011 1:31 PM

Never fear Bronco’s fans! Tebow will be your starter because with a quarterback who can run like that Fox can now fully implement his wishbone offense and never have to throw a forward pass again.

I can feel the excitement from here!

  42. granadosm says: Feb 24, 2011 1:33 PM

Of course fox is going to say that. if he said tebow is the starter than ortons stock declines. this is the typical off-season smoke screens all clubs and coaches say.

  43. nanananaboobo says: Feb 24, 2011 1:34 PM

Having watched every Bronocos game Orton has Started the two things that stick out are his inability to make ANYTHING happen under pressure(inescapability) and his propensity to choke when the game is on the line. He had numerous chances in the 4th quarter this year and really didn’t make much of them…He’s pretty good when he can stand back in the pocket and let loose…

Watching Tebow make things happen when things break down is something that reminds me of Jake or Elway..the last to QB’s to win Playoff games for the Broncos…and Maybe Tebow isn’t the future but I know it’s not ORTON

  44. mpw33 says: Feb 24, 2011 1:48 PM

What a shocking statement. The other two QBs on the roster may well be the two worst in NFL history.

  45. brooklynniner19 says: Feb 24, 2011 2:05 PM

Kyle orton is better than Tebow at the moment. So im not shocked about him taking the starting spot back.

  46. donramis says: Feb 24, 2011 2:12 PM

Elway does not think that Tebow is the answer and they will use this first round pick on a QB to develop while Orton continues to start. Mark my words: Tebow will be traded to the Dolphins for their first round pick……

  47. broncfanor says: Feb 24, 2011 2:21 PM

Anyone who thinks Orton had a good season needs to stop looking at stats and start looking at what he did for the team which is NOTHING.

He chokes in the red zone, he panics in the pocket, he folds under pressure and he can’t win from behind.

Orton is a glorified back up.

  48. dawgpound2010 says: Feb 24, 2011 2:42 PM

Maybe Miami or Jacksonville would be dumb enough to take Tebow off your hands Denver like Mcdaniels was dumb enough to give us Peyton Hillis for Brady Quinn.?!?

Signed: Mike “Colt McCoy is the guy !” Holmgren

  49. r8rsfan says: Feb 24, 2011 2:46 PM

Yup – Tebow had a nice run up the middle for a 40 yard score. First game of his career, no tape to watch, no game plan. That worked one time but not in any game after. If he keeps running like that he’ll end on IR. Look, I have nothing against Tebow. I appreciate his passion for the game. I just can’t believe how much the donk fans are sold on him, and most of it seems to be because he’s religious and comes across as this guy who’s pre-ordained by the Lord to win championships. I’ll just take a step back, watch you folks work yourselves into a frenzy and get drunk on Tebow kool-aid and wait for the inevitable crash.

As a Dolphins fans I can say with 100% certainty that you’re wrong.

    A. Henning did not implement the Wildcat in Miami. It was David Lee & Tony Sparano

    B. Henning IS a conservative play caller. Miami’s offense was VERY conservative and Henning was calling the plays. His offense dates back to the 50’s & admitted as such in a late season interview with the ‘phins before he was allowed to walk away.

Would you like to try again?

    Talk football.

  53. danglybanging says: Feb 24, 2011 7:31 PM

Easy kids! It is a fox in sheeps clothing the man is driving up the trade value for Orton.
