Giants still waiting for doctor’s clearance on Mathias Kiwanuka

M. Kiwanuka

Giants defensive end/linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka was enjoying a strong start to his contract year in 2010 before a herniated disc in his neck ended his season early, potentially jeopardizing his career.

If healthy, Kiwanuka would be one of the most intriguing names available on the market whenever free agency hits. But Giants G.M. Jerry Reese made it clear speaking to reporters Saturday that Kiwanuka has to clear some medical hurdles first and is not “out of the woods” yet.

“The first bridge we have to cross: Is he available to play? . . . I’m waiting for the doctor’s report. And hen he’s got to make the decision: ‘Do I want to play?’ He’s got to make the decision himself,” Reese said. “There’s some risk involved . . . when you have a neck injury, you have to be careful.”

Kiwanuka has been in the Giants building recently with the team’s trainers, but it’s clear he wouldn’t be ready to sign a contract if free agency was actually starting on time.

Reese was also asked about tackle Shawn Andrews, who battled back problems during his comeback 2010 season. Reese said Andrews would always probably have to battle his back injuries, bu wouldn’t comment on whether the team would bring him back next season.

UPDATE: The Giants released a statement later Saturday saying Kiwanuka has been fully cleared to play. All right then.
