Shockey anticipates signing a new deal by March 3

The NFL and the players’ union may not ink a new contract by March 3, but free-agent tight end Jeremy Shockey has every intention of doing so.

Per a league source, Shockey plans to sign with a new team before the expiration of the current league year, and in turn the possible commencement of a lockout.

At this point, however, no deal is imminent with the two teams that have shown interest in Shockey:  the Dolphins and the Panthers.  Even though Shockey has said he’d like to play for the Dolphins, we’re told that Shockey prefers the Panthers because of the presence of offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski, who worked at the University of Miami while Shockey played there.

Shockey was recently cut by the Saints.  Before spending three seasons in New Orleans, he spent six with the Giants.

C’mon Miami, sign this guy! It’s a risk, but the upside is too high to pass up. GRAB THE ACORN, IRELAND!

good luck to jeremy. he, like everyone else, has some things to work on, and he may be somewhat injury prone, but the dude is a beast with intensity that few can match. i’ll never forget his time here in new orleans. in 2009 alone, the touchdown on the limping leg against arizona, the go ahead score in the sb, and the beastly run after the catch against miami in one of the best saints comebacks ever. we’ll miss you shockey, thanks for the 110% effort

Shockey is a joke! He sat in suite when his Giant team was beating the Pats in the Super Bowl, always hurt and can be counted on for 10-12 game (if that) and a possesion TE. 5 yard and he goes down…
