Bears cut Tommie Harris, Hunter Hillenmeyer, Kevin Shaffer

Tommie Harris

Tommie Harris is headed out of Chicago.

A league source tells PFT that the Bears have cut Harris, a defensive tackle who has been with the team since Chicago selected him out of Oklahoma with the 14th overall pick in the 2004 NFL draft.

Early in his career Harris looked like he was on his way to becoming one of the league’s great defensive linemen; he was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

But Harris is coming off a sub-par 2010 season and was due a $2.5 million roster bonus this offseason. Now he won’t collect that money, and will be free to sign with any team that wants him.

UPDATE: The Bears have announced that they released Harris, linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer and offensive tackle Kevin Shaffer.

No surprise really, Tommy’s been done for awhile…it’s not that he doesn’t want to play, or he’s lazy, it’s just his body is finished due to his injuries, tough break.

I would like to see him in purple filling in for the Williams wall while they serve their suspensions. Maybe he could learn something positive and turn it around.

Good riddance on all three of them.

Tommie Harris is a shell of what he was five years ago.

Kevin Shaffer made too much money to be a backup.

Hunter was also a high priced backup – and the Bears union rep until the Bears IR’d him because of concussions. Read into that however you’d like. Robbie Gould is now their union rep.

Hillenmeyer becomes a Buccaneer. Lock it up.

There were 7 games were Harris didn’t even record a stat. Also there was a game or two where Harris wasn’t even active. So, why are other teams fans wanting this guy?

It’s name brand defensive talent, as an Eagles fan I’ll take any of them.
