Although NFL offseason activity is about to come to a screeching halt, at the moment free agents are free to sign with any team. And the New England Patriots just picked up one such free agent.

Former Bills and Jaguars defensive tackle Marcus Stroud reached an agreement on a two-year deal with the Patriots, Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting.

Stroud played 15 games for the Bills last season, starting 14 and recording three sacks. The Bills cut him two weeks ago.

A three-time Pro Bowler, Stroud will turn 33 in June.

Oh Bill… trying to satisfy the Pats fans desire for help on the font line by purchasing a name.

I’m sure they are paying him peanuts, and with all the draft picks these b@st@rds always have coming in they can afford to gamble on older vets. Nice pickup because they don’t have to count on him.

It’s good to see teams are already forming their team rosters for the 2012 season…shows great forethought!

Anytime the Buffalo Bills cut players, the Patriots pick them up for a time to learn how to beat actually beat Buffalo.

nice pickup for DL depth. They were decimated on the DL last season due to injuries. With Stroud and Ty Warren coming back from injury maybe I wont have to watch guys like Kyle Love playing all game.

    hmmm….interesting pickup.

    Stroud as a 3-4 DE?

    or a 2nd DT on Nickel/Dime sets?

I never question Bill’s signings…..they always seem to pan out.

Stroud Wilfork and Warren up front sounds pretty sexy. Wouldn’t mind seeing them pickup JJ Watt in the draft too.

Nice pickup. How do they afford it?

I thought the other 3 teams in the AFCE were supposed to pick up the Patriots left overs? Doesn’t make sense, Stroud is not a 3-4 DL.

phinhead…honey, I am a Dolphin fan somewhat….BUT…how in god’s name, after the MESS Ross has created…can anyone from Dolphins be critical of a franchise thats owned them for 10 years?

I like Sparano…but think Ireland is an inbecile…must be an offspring of Ross…You should be WONDERING…why the Dolphins aren’t doing ….something….to improve…What in the name of Pat White are they thinking????

I guess some have the attitude of “we aren’t playing until they tell us we can” and others have one of “we are playing until they tell us we aren’t”.

BB and Kraft are of the latter.

And I fully expect that there will games this year, but we won’t be told until it gets a lot warmer outside.

Stroud doesn’t have much more left in him…
The few years he was in Buffalo shows a slight decline each year. He was a part of the NFL’s worst run defense of 2010. Was once a giant impact player, is now just a body.

    Waste of time.

Great. The Pats always manage to sign these “used up” players and make them look like players again. Fitzy will be regretting this move… with Stroud sitting on his head after a sack.

Stroud can’t play DE in a 3/4, he is just veteran depth and is also there for Nickel and Dime fronts.

Good pickup, and I am sure the terms were pennies on the dollar. Never question the Patriot way. (Though my team is world champs and would never pick up a guy like Stroud….)

Are you for real??? Burgess, Jordan…..now that was two great examples of players coming back and making a difference…

  20. goombar2 says: Mar 1, 2011 3:23 PM

Yeah, this move doesn’t make a lot of sense… Pats have a ton of draft picks and there should be a couple DE in their 17th slot to choose from.. Obviously the money must have been right, maybe one of those things where Stroud is going for a ring and the price was too good?

At best he’s a back up and doubtful on the nickle pack… Just doesn’t have that burst. But maybe latter in the season and if injuries mount?

BB likes to have veterans around to teach the young players and to be around to fill in at times. A promising young player can learn a great deal faster with an experienced man around. Teams who trade draft picks for old men are the bastards to their fans.

Camp body (if there even is a camp). Best case he plays himself into a reserve role. And speaking of camp, remember, this year there might not even be a camp due to lockout so that makes vets slightly more valuable this year over previous.
