Seahawks, Matt Hasselbeck far apart in contract talks

Although the Seattle Seahawks say they want to retain quarterback Matt Hasselbeck, all indications are that Hasselbeck will test free agency, whenever free agency starts.

NFL Network’s Michael Lombardi reported (via USA Today) that Hasselbeck turned down Seattle’s last offer, and the Seahawks are getting concerned about re-signing him. According to Lombardi, the two sides are not close on a contract.

ESPN’s John Clayton also described Hasselbeck and the Seahawks as far apart in contract talks.

Seahawks GM John Schneider, however, described the talks with Hasselbeck as positive.

“It’s going good,” Schneider said. “We’re having great dialogue. Matt is Mr. Seattle, and he has done a ton of great things for the city, on and off the field. We’ve had good dialogue.”

Just not good enough to get close to a contract getting signed.

  1. Let Hass test FA. Not sure anyone outside Seattle still thinks he’s a viable starting QB in this league.

  2. Looks to me like he may become Mr. Vikings. Another over-the-hill former Packer in purple.

  3. The only way they could possibly be “far apart” is if Matt said “I want a contract” and the Seahawks said “We’d prefer not.”

Seriously, aside from 1 good playoff run the guy has been mediocre for 3 years now. I like him, but seriously.

The only other realistic option I see for the guy is Cleveland.

  4. Let him walk. Once he realizes his options are Arizona and Minnesota, he will come crawling back. No one wants this bum.

  5. Seattle takes Carson Palmer for a 1st or (more likely) 2nd round pick in next years draft. Bengals sign a much cheaper Matt Hasselbeck to guide us to another 4 win season and maybe a shot at drafting Andrew Luck.

“1 good playoff run”? Are you talking about 05?
Aren’t you a Pats fan like I am? He sure had a better playoff performance this year than the QB of the team we cheer for. 7 tds & 1 int over 2 games. Hell put it next to Brady’s last TWO playoff games…Hass actually beats him even more handily . Guess it’s time to retire ole #12 then? NOT.

Do I think he’s an elite starter anymore? Heck no. But I could see him in TN, AZ or several other places. I think he can still help a team win.

  7. Matt was involved in 6 wins last yr!!! 6 wins!!!! why wasn’t he cut after week 17, TIME TO MOVE ON Mrs .Seattle

  8. Sign him. That he didnt look good last few years is because of the protection. Draft a G or sign one and he’ll prosper like Kurt Warner did.
