While there won’t be any player transactions for the next week, coaching contract extensions will be allowed.

The Packers announced an extension for coach Mike McCarthy on Friday evening, fresh off his Super Bowl victory. Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee-Journal Sentinel reports it’s believed to be a three-year extension.

That means both McCarthy and G.M. Ted Thompson are signed through 2015. A previous report in the same newspaper said McCarthy was set to make roughly $5 million-per-year on his deal. Silverstein also reports all the Packers assistants signed extensions through 2012.

“We are very pleased to finalize this agreement with Mike,” Thompson said in a statement. “He’s a good football coach, a good leader, and a good man. I look forward to working with Mike into the future.”

It’s been quite a journey for McCarthy, who was a surprise hire after a disastrous season running the 49ers offense before he landed in Green Bay.

Green Bay has a great young nucleus of players in place that have grown together in McCarthy/Thompson’s system. Now the players should be able to stay in that system throughout their primes.
