I’m a fan with tickets. Early in his career Jets fans were mystified as to how he could suck so bad…so I made it a point to focus on him at a game. Jets put him in on some kickoffs. I watched only him on a couple of them, and came to the conclusion that he is a complete spaz. He may be able to run fast straight. Outside of that, he has zero athletic ability. No awareness, no court sense (as they call it in hoops), no ability to react and change direction.

He made one play in his career. 09 season. Chris Johnson broke off a run and it looked like he was going to go about 70 yards for a score. Gholston chased him down from behind as Johnson made an inside cut to avoid a DB and it turned out to be a 40 yard run. It was an important play because the Jets won and needed the game, but upon further review he had outside containment on the play and a DT had pushed him off the line in that direction, so I guess he figured he’d keep running in that direction and made the play.

Broken clock being right twice a day scenario. In his case, he even fubar’d that one because it was only right once.

I wouldn’t count Gholston out just yet — while he was a horrible misfit in a 3-4 defense, in a 4-3 he could do just fine. That’s not to say he’ll ever live up to his draft billing, but some players fit much better in a 4-3 vs. a 3-4 (or vice versa).

Try not to sound so biased. Every single top-flight college football program puts out a TON of busts, just like they put out a ton of talent. USC, PSU, UF, FSU, Texas, OU, LSU…all of these schools have had many top picks not live up to their potential. It’s just going to happen when you have that many 1st round guys. The only real exception might be Miami, and they just don’t put out talent at all anymore.

Wow, is that true? then the Jets had better get rid of 3-time Pro Bowler Nick Mangold, who’s been their starting center since they drafted him. Wouldn’t want that ‘absolute fact’ to come back and haunt them.

As far as on the field performance, it is possible that VG actually was a bigger bust than JR.

But when you throw in the amount of money Russell stole from the Raiders compared to what Gholston stole from the Jets, you still have to say he is the bigger bust.

I’ll say this for Jamarcus Russell; he not only made completions, he threw some incredible touchdowns – some lazers, some bombs – and he made some fabulous runs and scored with his feet and at times gave a taste of what he could’ve been if he’d applied himself.

Vernon Gholston, on the otherhand, applied himself and worked hard to become a great NFL player and never did anything to warrant much hope for his NFL career except to have gargantuan biceps.

On the bust scale, I think Gholston fell harder than Russell… then again, I’m a Raider fan, so objectivity on this one is a little challenging.

He may be worth a look as a DE in a 4-3 at the minimum salary though.

Vernon still gets a chance to re-write his story, come over to the GMen, I can see him playing a Kiwanuka type role…
