If Carolina takes Cam Newton with the first pick, then they are dumm (yes, no ‘b’)! Newton will be lucky if he’s in the top 15. He should be better than JaMarcus, but he could only be slightly better than Vince Young. That’s not a good gamble at # 1 overall. Plus, Newton did himself no favors with his megalomaniac behavior. Who would want to deal with this guy after adding more fuel to the fire by making him the # 1 overall pick?

Carolina should move down if possible and grab AJ Green or Julio Jones. I’m no Carolina fan, but Steve Smith is done and they have no other threat. With Stewart and Williams (for now) in the backfield, they need help outside. If they don’t go that route, then Peterson would be an upgrade at CB.

i really hope the seahawks don’t pick kaepernick IF this plays out and both pouncey and carimi are still on the board at #25. kaepernick could be a solid pickup in the mid-later rounds but def not in the 1st.

I’ve been searching for a clip too and cannot find one, but the comments you refer to easily came a couple of years after the remarks I’m mentioning.

I bet somebody on the PFT staff could dig it up, if they were so inclined. I did not make this up or twist it though.

The point about second-round quarterbacks is that, if 32 teams pass on the chance to draft them in the first round, they’re probably not working out.

Specifically, they’re working out 10-20 percent of the time, depending on your standards for a second-round quarterback.

So if the scouting done by 32 teams deems Jake Locker unworthy of being drafted in round one — but he goes in round two — that indicates teams know in the backs of their minds that Locker won’t work out.

My guess is that the scouting done by at least one team will deem Locker worthy of a top-32 selection.

I have no idea if he deserves it.

Not necessarily true. Just because a team deems a QB unworthy of being a 1st round pick doesn’t mean they think he won’t work out – why even bother making the pick then? Even with potential and upside a team doesn’t waste a 2nd round pick on someone they don’t think will make it. It just means they don’t think he’s as sure of a thing, which is a huge difference than thinking he won’t work out.

Over a 20 year span from 1989 to 2008 (too early to tell on QBs from the last 2 drafts) there were 21 QBs taken in the 2nd round. 3 were very good to great, 5 had some modicum of success, and 12 were busts or journeyman back-ups at best. The 3 that were very good to great were all given some consideration as first round picks, but for one reason or another slid into the 2nd round. The remaining 17 were never considered possible 1st rounders. Many were athletic QBs taken too high but worth taking a chance on. Others were overdrafted by teams needing a QB who missed out on taking one in the 1st round.

My point is, QBs who slide out of round one and into round 2 (maybe Locker, Mallett & Ponder this year) have a better chance of making it in the NFL than someone who simply didn’t have 1st round talent in the first place.

Your logic on teams passing up on QBs could also be used for just about any player passed on the first round – teams think there is less of a chance for success. The fact that a ton of QBs are selected in the 1st round and approximately only one per year in the 2nd, indicates, if anything, teams over value QBs in the draft and select them too early. Perhaps that’s why there are so many 1st round QB busts as well.

Regarding your statement of Dallas’ preference for offensive performers in the first round, the total number of offensive players taken by the Jones administration in the first round is 6. And that’s after starting out with Aikman and Smith in his first two drafts.

The strength of this year’s crop is in the DL and CB. That’s probably why the first OT went almost half way in this mock. Rick Gosselin is predicting the possibility of as many as 13 Defensive linemen in the first round.

And there’s plenty of people laid off now that are settling for what in normal times would be considered a teenager job just to make ends meet.

Tebow is more experienced, but he also has a mechanical issue with his throwing motion that Newton doesn’t have. Despite intensive efforts to correct his windup, he still reverts to it under pressure. It’s questionable whether he will ever be able to correct this problem. Newton, on the other hand, is better prepared to make downfield throws in the face of an oncoming pass rush. That’s why I said he’s not less prepared than Tebow to start in a pro-style offense.

Experience v. mechanics–it’s a close call either way. But Cam’s issues arebe easily corrected.

I googled that quote and couldn’t find it anywhere. McNabb complained once that black QBs take more criticism than white QBs, so maybe the quote is taken out of context. There is no way McNabb predicted before the Super Bowl that he was going to get slaughtered.
