Baylor’s Taylor says weight loss has been key to development

Baylor defensive tackle Phil Taylor says he got a lot of questions from NFL teams at the Combine about his tendency to take plays off, especially earlier in his college career.

He said on PFT Live Tuesday that his up-and-down intensity mostly had to do with weight problems.  He’s dropped almost 30 pounds (into the 330′s), and says that helps him maintain his energy.

Taylor may not be a three down player in the NFL right away.  He says his role model on the field is Steelers nose tackle Casey Hampton, and it would make sense for a team to draft Taylor as an early-down run plugger in a 3-4 defense to start his career.

It might even make sense for the Steelers to draft Taylor at No. 31 to learn from Hampton himself.

the Steelers? Taylor was dismissed from Penn State for off-field issues and has a weight problem – Steelers have greater needs along the offensive line and defensive back field
