why, in that picture, is the front point of the ball pointing behind him? strong arm or not, nfl ready or not, that’s bad mechanics? i’m no expert, just think drew brees, or aaron rodgers would never do that..

------------------------

I think you need to google some pictures of drew brees and aaron rodgers throwing before you say they would never do that, because that IS good mechanics, and they ALL do it.

You try throwing a football keeping the nose pointed forward for the entire motion and tell me how that goes for you.

Please know what you're talking about before you bash someone who is one million times better than you at something.

Why do people keep comparing this kid to Tom Brady? The patriots have a great system, and they made Matt Cassell look like Drew Brees in a couple of his games.. The combine measures one thing, athleticism.. And I don't know guys, I'm sure you have to be pretty athletic to play qb, isn't football a sport. It's funny how Mallet has somewhat crappy proday but he's still the best, but last year tim tebow had an awesome proday and did everything in college but was considered a project qb.. Mayock, get a new job already..

Look at the two QBs in the Super Bowl...they are two of the best in the business and making plays outside the pocket when everything else breaks down. So many games are decided by the smallest of margins, being able to keep a play alive and deliver an accurate throw on the move is of paramount importance.

vicksprman has it exactly right..Mallet cannot escape the defense, is a horrible decision maker in pressure situations and has questionable makeup.

Do not want.

Clausen was the most pro ready by system and mechanics. However it is an unfair comparison since Notre Dame constantly got their tails kicked with Jimmy. At least Mallet has shown the ability to win games. With the right coach he should be a pretty solid QB. I would take him over Kolb or any other options at the moment just not at the 7th pick. I doubt he will fall as far as Clausen did though so it looks like we'll end up with Dalton, Ponder, or Kapernick in the 2nd or 3rd round

He has the fight in him to fend off would-be tacklers, a lot like Drew Bledsoe did. Mobility isn't the biggest deal, especially when a guy has as much potential as a pure passer as Mallett does.

I think his floor is Jeff George, but that's only if he really fizzles in the leadership department.

If I were a team in desperate need of a QB, I'd pass on all these chumps, sign Derek Anderson, ensuring an 0-and-16 season, and draft Andrew Luck next year. None of these guys can hold a candle to Luck. Of Mallett, Newton, Locker & Gabbert, 2-3 of them will be total busts. MARK IT!

Elite, rare arm strength.
Great at going through progressions
Great at reading blitzes
Great at looking off safeties and linebackers
Great at reading coverages
Good accuracy
Good film study habits

Questionable intangibles and leadership
Below average athlete

I hope Mallet does well he was a great college QB, but so were the likes of Lienart, Harrington and Smith. I am just not sold yet.

For the POSSIBLE character issues I was refering to please feel free to use the search option by typing *ryan mallet* on the pft site. I am not going to link half a dozen articles.

Why even discuss it? Drafting QBs is as much of a crapshoot as every other position. There are only 5 teams (with at least 20 years draft history) that haven't wasted a 1st on a QB that was unsuccessful. Dallas, Miami, Minnesota, New England, and New Orleans are the only ones that haven't. There are too many variables to predict.... QBs character and work ethic, coaching staff, stability of organization, supporting cast, veteran leadership, they all go into forming that most important quality for a QB to have. Confidence. So draft one and take your chances. Just don't be the Rams and use 3 consecutive 1sts on QBs.....

The best QB’s in the NFL make it a point to never run. Running gets you hurt. So his speed (or lack thereof) is no concern.

How fast is Peyton Manning? Brees? Brady?

Wouldn't be surprised if Mallett was drafted by Minnesota, and wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't due to their other needs, he does have a hell of an arm though and isn't as im-mobile as people say. I've seen him move around pretty well in some highlight reels.

Either way, if Minnesota does pass on Mallett and hope Locker/Ponder will slide to their pick in round 2 there's no way Mallett slides past Pete Carroll and the Seahawks.

He could turn into a very good NFL QB with Musgrave and some good acqusitions on the offensive line, he can play and would be a great pick at #12. And the Vikings need a quarterback right now with a chip on his shoulder to come in and light a fire under 'em.

Mallett, Rodgers, Cutler, Stafford could make the NFC North the best QB division in the NFL.

Elite, rare arm strength.
Great at going through progressions
Great at reading blitzes
Great at looking off safeties and linebackers
Great at reading coverages
Good accuracy
Good film study habits

Questionable intangibles and leadership
Below average athlete

Yeah, he's going to be a bust! Besides the fact that he is more pro ready than Gabbert and Newton combined. If Mallet checks out good in the interviews to silence questions about his maturity and leadership he's a top 10 pick.

why, in that picture, is the front point of the ball pointing behind him? strong arm or not, nfl ready or not, that’s bad mechanics? i’m no expert, just think drew brees, or aaron rodgers would never do that..

That's because his throwing style consists of snapping his fingers. He holds the ball like that and by snapping his fingers he creates an antigravitational vortex which fires the out with tremendous velocity and accuracy.

i am not one to normally make absurd comparisons and by no means am i saying that ryan mallett is the next tom brady, but i also think that a QBs 40 time and vertical jump are about the last things that i would care about. what these things tell me is that you need to protect your QB and give them time to throw. i challenge anyone to deny that Brady is ineffective if he is getting continuously harassed and although he has gotten better moving around pressure in the pocket, he is still not very mobile. i like ryan mallet and think that if he plays behind a solid offensive line and works hard to improve he may be a very, very good QB in the NFL. also really like this colin kaepernick kid!
