Gabe Carimi: Most NFL scouts think I’m the best tackle in the draft

Gabe Carimi

We’ll still have to wait more than six months before we see how Wisconsin offensive tackle Gabe Carimi looks in the NFL. But we know he can talk a good game.

Carimi said at the NFL Scouting Combine that he considers himself the best offensive tackle in this year’s draft. And he said at today’s Wisconsin Pro Day that when he talked to NFL scouts and coaches about those comments, most of them told him they think he’s the best, too.

“They asked me why I thought that,” Carimi said. “They asked me why, and I repeated myself. And most of them said they agreed.”

Carimi is a first-round pick on the PFT mock draft, but he isn’t the first tackle off the board. Today’s workouts were an opportunity for Carimi, who won the Outland Trophy as the best lineman in the NCAA, to show that he’s the best lineman in the draft.

And as for the possibility that he’s done a little too much talking about himself, Carimi doesn’t see that as a problem.

“I wouldn’t see why you wouldn’t want a confident player,” Carimi said.

He followed that up by saying “Modesty is my best attribute.”

I’d be happy if he slipped to the Colts or Bears. He can talk all he wants as long as he BLOCKS SOMEBODY!!!!!!!

Its nice to be confident but he is talking a little too much about himself. If you are the best great, no need to keep talking yourself up.

There’s a difference between confidence and arrogance. I hope he isn’t the first tackle drafted. He could use some humility.

wow just had a look at the winners of the Outland Trophy – must say it is a very impressive list e.g. Bruce Smith, Will Shields, Joe Thomas, Ndamukong Suh, Chris Samuels, Orlando Pace, Jonathan Ogden amongst the recent winners

However there are also guys like Andre Smith, Glenn Dorsey in that list.

Man the draft is such a crapshoot I tell ya…

    who’s better?

More typical BS from the state of Wisconsin.

I’m surprised this guy didn’t take a few cheap and unnecessary shots at the Gophers. Or the entire state of Minnesota for that matter.

At last we’ve found the skinniest kid at fat camp.

not saying much. This is the weakest draft for OT in a long long time. I’m not sure if any of these guys can play the left side in the nfl next year. Not even sure if any of these guys will be drafted in the top 15 picks.

LMAO! What in the world does this story have to do with Minnesota? It can be embarrassing when someone’s inferiority complex exhibits itself in such obvious fashion. Heh.

Sounds like a future 1rst round bust and future Jet.

hey knucklehead: that bike was made like every other harley-davidson: in wisconsin. nice stadium, by the way.

This isn’t Terrel Buckley comparing himself to Jim Thorpe. He said he thinks he is the best lineman in the draft… That’s what he should say. He’s trying to get drafted as high as possible so he makes more money.

there’s no such thing as a “cheap and unnecessary shot” at the state of minnesota….

Clearly, it was a light-hearted jab at the Packer fans that make fun of Viking fans. Was it a bit over your head? Sorry about that.

Really cause ur mock drafts r so great? The drafts suck. He’s good but since u have him in the first round he prlly won’t go there. Seeing as u said we’d get Eric berry……. U guys were off

  17. sterlingrodgers says: Mar 9, 2011 9:08 PM

Knucklehead: if that was the intent, cool. Sorry. It will not be as much fun when we beat the LA Vikings, that’s for sure.

According to Gabe, “If you hold their feet to the fire, all of them will admit that I’m the best tackle in the draft…………

……………although some endured the pain longer than others before coming around.”.

  19. lance19 says: Mar 9, 2011 10:39 PM

    Perfect fit for the Jets!!!

They’ve “won” the last two Super Bowls,
and the next one’s already promised!

If Carimi can follow in the foot steps of former Badger Joe Thomas, he is a steal in the middle to late 1st round.

Gaber Carimi has probably never been to a REAL job interview. NFL scouts will tell you whatever they want but will also be judging what you have to say. Sorry Gabe but I doubt they came away as impressed as you think.

While nowhere near the same bravado, Carimi’s chatter reminds me a bit of another tackle, Tony Mandarich, the talking “Hall of Famer” with “Quickly Forgotten” results.
Mandarich’s “Incredible Bust” reputation is well-known, the second pick in the draft by Green Bay. He talked a great game. During the early stages of that summer’s training camp practice, Tim Harris, a good, but not great, linebacker made a fool of Mandarich in practice.
I hope this doesn’t happen to Carimi. If he lands in the North Division he would have to deal with Julius Peppers and Jared Allen both of whom would shut him up rather quickly unless he is as good as he says he is.

    He could be.
