Football is back, arena style

With the NFL six days in to a non-lockout lockout and with no end to the negotiations in sight, football has not completely gone away.

The AFL season begins this weekend, and the league has issued (for the first time, we think) a preseason coaches’ poll.

At No. 1 are the Spokane Shock, the defending champions from 2010.  They received 12 of 16 votes.

The rest of the ten teams who made it are the San Jose SaberCats (two first-place votes), the Orlando Predators (three), the Philadelphia Soul (one), the Jacksonville Sharks, the Arizona Rattlers, the Chicago Rush, the Cleveland Gladiators, the Pittsburgh Power, and the New Orleans VooDoo.

I’ll be taking Florio Jr. to a Power game at the new Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh.  Maybe, if I squint, they’ll look like the Steelers.  Or the Penguins.

Or the Pirates.

  1. Enjoy the game. As an insider, ask someone why they didn’t bring back the old “Pittsburgh Gladiators” name and logo from the late 1980s. I’ll be bringing Fez Jr. to the Arizona Rattlers game this weekend against the hated Jacksonville…uh..(looks it up)…Sharks!

  2. What? Tampa makes it to the Championship (beating the preds) and we’re not in the top ten?

    Jealousy, plain and simple.

Good thing this doesn’t mean anything and we’ll go on to win yet another title like we usually do.

  3. Dad told the kid he had some primo 10th row seats just 25 yards to the right of the midfield stripe. Which means they are in the very far corner of the venue, with cars whizzing by just a few feet from their butts.

  4. People shouldn’t knock Arena Football. It’s a fun game and is totally fan friendly. Then again, it’s also football!
I know how i’m going to keep my mind of the NFL. Watch the only pro league with an 18 game schedule. That’s right. 18 games.

  5. I don’t understand all of the baseball hate on this site. Sure, its crazy boring to watch on TV, but it can be super fun to go to games. Even in DC. And you guys have one of the best stadiums in all of sports in PNC Park.

  6. I watched a game or two, back when the games were broadcast on NBC. It was reasonably entertaining, and there is no question that some of those guys were at least as good as some of the rank-and-file NFL players.

I’d watch again, if the league was able to secure some kind of over-the-air broadcast. For my money, 50-yard football is better viewing than golf, baseball, basketball . . . etc.

  7. Arena-ball rocks! Little R8RSFAN and I will be at the Blaze vs. Storm game next Thursday. Love the pace of the game and how close the fans are to the action, not to mention the numerous souvenirs whenever a ball goes into the stands.

This isn’t baseball hating, its Pirates hating. If I want to look at a nice stadium, I will… go somewhere else with a nice stadium with a winning team. The PNC Park is a really nice stadium only works about the first 10 to 15 losses that you see there. After that, it is just another place to sit outdoors. Those of us in our late 20s are the ones that suffer through this. we are old enough to remember a winning team but get beaten down over and over again. The younger kids probably don’t even care. The old guys forget that they stink year after year.

  9. The Pittsburgh power vs the Philadelphia soul on the NFL network Friday night the 11th of March that’s tommorrow night
