Police confirm Meriweather was at shooting; relative says he broke up fight

Details continue to slowly come out regarding Brandon Meriweather’s involvement in a shooting that occurred in Orlando nearly two weeks ago, leaving two men injured.

The Orange County Sheriff’s office confirmed to the Boston Herald that Meriweather was indeed present at the time of the shooting.

“We will continue to provide information that is available for release when proper to do so, and in a timely manner,” the office said in a statement released Thursday afternoon, noting the investigation was open.

One of Meriweather’s relatives, who stayed anonymous for fear of retribution, told Bob Hohler of the Boston Globe that Meriweather was trying to break up a fight when the shots were fired.

The story painted by Hohler is one of multiple fights throughout a night of partying, culminating in a gunfight and accidental shooting.  Meriweather’s cousins were involved and the anonymous witness even named who he believes was the gunman — Anton Massey.

The entire account is worth checking out, although it’s worth noting that Meriweather’s relative has a potential bias when trying to clear his family member’s name.

    EXACTLY!

Let’s withold judgment, either way, till we know what investigators are able to establish as far as what REALLY happened.

  2. I’m a Pats fan… but let me be the first to say – LOL. There’s a 95% chance he started the flight, there’s a 60% chance he fired a gun, and there’s a negative -100.2% chance that he tried to break up the fight.

  3. “The story painted by Hohler is one of multiple fights throughout a night of partying, culminating in a gunfight and accidental shooting.”

    I’m not a very smart man but……… Multiple fights…….culminating in a gunfight……….. ACCIDENTAL SHOOTING???????????

I have no idea whether Meriweather shot anyone or not, and I am not going to jump to any conclusions.

But for goodness sake, read the above description of the party he attended.

Why would an NFL player with such a promising future be anywhere near this type of party?

When will these guys learn not to expose themselves to this type of garbage?

They are going to be non-stop targets to people who see nothing but a dollar sign when they see a pro athlete.

My guess is these guys have no idea who shot them, and are simply accusing the guy they know has the biggest wallet.

There are plenty of clubs with good security that know how to take of celebrities. Maybe he should try that next time.

  5. Does the report cause anyone else to wonder:

If BM was the peacemaker trying to break up the fight, then why does his relative saying that need, ‘anonymity for fear of retribution’ ?

Adds up like 1+1 = 3 to me.

There is another possibility: Meriweather might have been lawfully firing his weapon.

    —————

I don’t know why you got 8 thumbs down, but that’s a legitimate possibility. The last (only other) time he was involved in a shooting incident, he was legitimately defending someone… his friend got shot and was fired at first.

His hand gun is registered, unlike what some people estimate as 1/5 of all guns in the United States.

  7. I find it hard to believe that the angle he aimed at was even remotely close enough to actually hit someone.

If this is true, maybe next year he’ll be All-Pro instead of just a Pro Bowler.

I’m no genius, but I am guessing he fears retribution from the victims. If the victims are trying to get money out of Merriweather, and their attempts to “get paid” are thwarted by someone, they may take out their anger on the individual that thwarted their effort….that was my take on the situation. As they say, snitches get stitches….

  9. “….multiple fights throughout a night of partying, culminating in a gunfight and accidental shooting.”

What scenario is there where a gunfight can logically result in an ACCIDENTAL shooting. Was everyone in this “gunfight” aiming to miss?

  10. OK???…If, he IS guilty..then why the lawyer going after him …in what appears to be a civil case?

If any of you got shot, don’t you think you’d report this to police right away??? Never mind it comes out after they hire an attorney…who specializes in sleaze money grabs…and over 2 weeks after incident?

Do not have any opinion on BM…but this one is AZZ backwards.

Because bless his heart..he isn’t the brightest crayon in the box. Think about when he cracked heap in the head and he starts making all those comments about not changing how he played. Then as soon as Rodney Harrison got ahold of him, he shut his mouth and toed the party line. He is a follower and not a leader. He’s kind of like the Laurence Maroney of the defense. and Laurence don’t live there anymore.
