Bonamego back in the league with Saints

J. Bonamego

Five months after one disastrous night of special teams play cost John Bonamego his job, the longtime NFL coach is back in the league.

Bonamego, a 24-year NFL veteran, was the Saints’ special teams coordinator in 2006 and 2007. He’s back as an assistant special teams coach. (The team’s blocked punt in their return to the Superdome is right there with Sean Payton’s onside kick and Tom Dempsey’s field goal as the most memorable special teams plays in team history.)

Bonamego was booted from his gig in Miami after the Dolphins’ special teams memorably imploded on Monday Night Football in October.

The Saints also promoted Tony Oden to secondary from assistant secondary coach and moved Mike Mallory from assistant special teams coach to assistant secondary coach.

Mike Triplette of the New Orleans Times-Picayune reports John Carney could be added to the staff later this offseason.
