Blaine Gabbert completes 44-of-49 passes at Pro Day

Insight Bowl - Missouri v Iowa Getty Images

Dave Matter of the Columbia Daily Tribune reports that the unofficial completion count from Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert’s Thursday Pro Day was 44-for-49.

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton’s total was 50-of-60, while TCU’s Andy Dalton went 49-for-52 earlier this week.

Unlike Newton’s, Gabbert’s Pro Day was not fully televised. So until NFL Network’s Mike Mayock speaks later today, we have to rely on beat writers like Matter for observations. Matter covers the Missouri Tiger football team for the Daily Tribune.

Matter attributed “at least three” of Gabbert’s misses to drops on catchable balls. Drops were not unexpected, as Gabbert was throwing to small-school receivers because former Missouri players were ineligible due to the NFL’s lockout.

ESPN did televise the first 18-20 throws of Gabbert’s routine. To the untrained eye, Gabbert’s ball appears to fly smoothly and powerfully off his hand. He spins a tight spiral, demonstrated impressive touch on downfield throws, and was able to power the ball to any spot on the field he wanted. We don’t question Gabbert’s arm strength.

At least seven high-ranking NFL types were confirmed to be on hand: Rex Ryan, John Harbaugh, Marvin Lewis, John Elway, Dirk Koetter, Jim Harbaugh, and Jack Del Rio.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera and G.M. Marty Hurney were not seen.

We’ll have another review of the Missouri Pro Day when Mayock speaks on NFL Network’s Path to the Draft at 6 p.m. eastern.

Arm strength and a deep ball can be worked on and improved. Any Packer fan who watched Rodgers develop can attest to this – he has improved light years in those categories.

You think there will ever be a day when these guys are doing their pro-days and the combine in full pads?

  3. tblitz25 says: Mar 17, 2011 3:02 PM

Very telling. No Rivera and No Whisenhunt. At the end of the day if the Panthers thought it would be even remotely possible they would take Gabbert then the coach and GM whose jobs would be on the line should he not pan out would most certainly be at every workout he held.

Gabbert has a great arm. Not sure where this “weak arm” crap is coming from. Oh, yeah, Darin Gantt. At least Gantt is working for the extra money the Panthers are paying him.

    @savocabol1…

I’ve always said if I was a prospect I’d go through the entire combine…weigh in, drills, 40, interview, bench etc. wearing a helmet.

There is NO WAY that would not improve your draft stock.

Why is Rex Ryan on hand? He better only be there for the buffet. Jets are all set at QB.

  7. thefiesty1 says: Mar 17, 2011 3:26 PM

That’s great, but what is his completion percentage with a 300 pound defensive end in his face?

  8. knucklebucket says: Mar 17, 2011 3:27 PM

Rex Ryan was there? I thought he already had his quaterback for the future…..

  9. hobartbaker says: Mar 17, 2011 3:30 PM

Rivera was there along with the Bidwell family who own the Cardinals. There are 10 or so other players working out for the scouts, including another first rounder in Aldon Smith. Ryan didn’t have to be looking QB.

Did Darin G actually say he has a weak arm or he was saying how inaccurate Gabbert was throwing over 15 yards? Clearly I thought it was deep ball accuracy. If so, my fault.

to everyone who is confused on why rex ryan was there…

this was missouri’s PRO DAY, gabbert wasn’t the only prospect working out.

the player he was probably there for (much like mayhew from the lions) is aldon smith the OLB/DE

Why do you assume that because a player is from a ‘small school’ he will be more likely to drop a pass? I guess those other 44 completions were just dumb luck?

Besides, most of the ‘pundits’ say that Gabbert has a lower completion percentage BECAUSE he has ‘below average’ receivers – he should be glad he doesn’t have to throw to his teammates.

    @btowngetsdown and knucklebucket

You do realize that Missouri has other players besides Gabbert, right?

Jets set at QB? LOL!!! Have u ever watched a Jets game. The football version of the Yankees carry him on every down.

Dirk Koetter AND Jack Del Rio? That’s the Jaguars’ offensive coordinator and their head coach. Both of them were there?

Teams all want to buy Gabbert dinner for not making them hang around all day waiting, while he played diva for the cameras.

    Just as I suspected..

Excuses, excuses, excuses are already made for Blaine by the media on his throwing and “others” simply not cathing the ball. Well, if that’s the case maybe Blaine show have thrown at the Combine since out of the top QBs he was most hidden. Blaine is Brett Farve #2. and I don’t mean his talent. I mean the sports media’ s constant defense of him.

If I’m not mistaking, I believe this was the site that criticized Cam on his 60-50 number and barely made any excuses for him when four of those balls were catchable balls.

Even more funny, was never mentioning that he took throwing offers from the coaches and GMs who may have wanted to see him do a few throws off the cuff. So he actually threw 65. But why should I expect those who flock together in the elite club of sports reporting to have some integrity when it comes to this kid.

And, I guess Mayock’s, one of Blaine’s agent’s friend, words are the end all to be all.

WHAT!?!?!? But he has Tim Tebow, the best thing since sliced bread.

  26. omniscient48 says: Mar 17, 2011 6:49 PM

The most impressive statistic is that he threw no interceptions.

  27. jackbassett says: Mar 17, 2011 7:37 PM

In unrelated news, I went to the bowling alley today and bowled a 280 with bumper guards and starting half way down the lane. Impressive, huh?

  28. burntorangehorn says: Mar 17, 2011 9:57 PM

I’m a little unsure of where the comparisons originate. When I see Gabbert, I think his floor is Tim Couch, while his ceiling is actually really high. The physical similarities between Couch and Gabbert are there, and they come from similar non-pro-style offensive backgrounds (run-and-shoot and Air Raid for Couch, and spread for Gabbert). Gabbert shares the probably unfounded questions about his arm strength, ability to transition to a more fundamental pro offense, and quite a bit more. The difference is that Gabbert could go to a much better team than the expansion Browns.
