Does anyone know if they review only if the play is signalled a score on the field or if the play is reviewed if it might have been a score even though it was ruled not a score. Example like a goal line stand where the ref ruled down before crossing the plane.

––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
I wondered this myself. Trent Green said last night on the NFL channel that it is in fact only for plays that were CALLED a TD...not attempts that were unsuccessful. Those will still have to be challenged by the HC.

Ok, just give the ref 30 seconds to look under the hood. It doesn't take 5-6 minutes to review a play and move on. What is the competition committee trying to do? Sounds like they are trying to drag out the game like boring baseball. Less action will continue to make me lose interest.

There must be a few soccer fans in the meetings, since this was the Big Idea being talked about endlessly at the last World Cup. It makes sense there (and it'll never happen), and it makes sense in The League, as well as with turnovers, so long as the ref's not going under the hood and it's being done in the booth.

I have to agree that this just does not make sense. The comments about more commercials is probably the real reason for having more review. I mean I think that the review offical sometimes gets it wrong watching it in slow motion. A detailed review in slow motion can skew the interputation of the play sometimes as much as a real-time call. If the NFL really wanted to get it right....put a transponder in the ball and wire the field.....then we would know where the ball was all the time....no delay for first downs and no incorrect spots. But is that really football......I am sure the technology exits to determine when a ball is fumbled or if it was a complete pass. But that would be real time and not a commercial break.

"It’s a good start, but we think the league needs to ultimately expand the rule to provide automatic review of all turnover plays and all plays involving a potential first down."

then why even have coaches challenges? there would only be challenges if a player was down but didn't get a first down or TD on the play. or if there was a complete play...but wouldnt get a first down or TD on the play.

and it wouldn't lengthen the game if they just did like they do in college were the replay booth official (sitting in his nice comfy chair looking at his nice big HD tv and not having to deal with screaming fans) made the calls on all replays.

I'm ok with reviewing all scoring plays as long as the reviews of obviously valid scores don't interrupt the flow of the game.

I disagree with this. There are occasional problems with the current challenge system of reviews, but not so many to warrant automatic reviews of turnovers and first downs.

Where does it stop? Do we need reviews to tell us where a punt went out of bounds? Or to look for uncalled holding penalties on every play? Let 'em play.

Booth review or no review. Booth review checks every play without requiring red hankies or sideline hoods ... or slowing down the game. Or with no review, you keep going and live with the human errors. Either way, you eliminate these interminable stops and starts, which too often fail to resolve the errors anyway.
furious76 says: Mar 22, 2011 2:12 PM

The more I think about this, the better sensors in the ball sound. It would take at least 8 small sensors, 1 in each tip, and 6 or so around the largest part of the ball. You could accurately track exactly where the ball was.
-------------------------------------------

Obviously you don't understand the concepts of being down by contact. If a player hits down on the field then bounces into the EZ, your little sensors don't mean diddly. Same if he steps out, has a knee hit first, etc. Sensors are 100% USELESS!

What this means is, instead of celebrating when your team scores on a big play, you can now sit and patiently wait for 2 or 3 minutes while some zebra sticks his head in a booth. After that he will uphold or reverse the call, and by this time you will no longer be interested in cheering. Your nerves will be shot for waiting for the call.

Stuff like this ruins how fans watch the games.

The more I think about this, the better sensors in the ball sound. It would take at least 8 small sensors, 1 in each tip, and 6 or so around the largest part of the ball. You could accurately track exactly where the ball was.

Add to that sensors throughout the field that know exactly when the ball is out of bounds, or the player with sensors in the shoes, when the ball is over the first down marker, and when the plane is crossed for a goal.

I think a sensor based ball location change would improve the game vastly. How many teams have been cheated out of a win due to human error on ball location??

Am I the only one who thinks that permanent goal-line and side-line cameras should be used to determine if the ball crossed the plane and whether or not a player stepped out of bounds? This seems like too logical of a thing not to do. The NFL should install permanent cameras not only looking down the length of the goal/side lines, but they should also have a series of cameras above those lines peering downwards -- which would give the best possible angle(s) to see whether or not the ball/foot crossed the line.

This would eliminate a large number of time-consuming coach's challenges, and potentially speed up the game.

This is completely ridiculous and for those of you who think this is too take out human error you have been fooled. This is for more commercial breaks.

If the NFL wanted to really get serious about taking out the human error of the game they would go to the college system which if far superior. Every play in college is reviewed but not by an official on the field but one up in a booth. This allows for plays to be reviewed without the stopping of action. Why doesn't the NFL go this? Because it doesn't cause long commercial breaks.

I may be in the minority but I like the way that they review all plays in CFB. Heck, the games aren't that much longer than before and frankly, the extra commercials that they've been squeezing in have added more time than replay.

Great. All scoring plays should have been reviewed long ago...as long as there is a ref in the booth that makes the call instead of telling the on-field ref to spend another 90 seconds of commercial time. Make this automatic instead of time consuming. Give the booth access to all angles and let him/her buzz the field to stop play ONLY when necessary. The first down suggestion is too far. As for the turnovers, keep those to a coach's challenge...if they waste them early, too bad.

It’s a good start, but we think the league needs to ultimately expand the rule to provide automatic review of all turnover plays and all plays involving a potential first down.

++++++

The turnover bit, yes... but every first down? No way. Maybe every change of possession play like on 4th downs as well, but reviewing 1st downs would make the games last forever.

Reviewing after every turnover, close play or first down is absolutely garbage. The human error factor is what makes sports, sports.

Last year with the support for the overtime rule and now this garbage? Come on Flo.

"So if a team takes three cracks to try to punch it in from the one yard line, and we could get a booth review after every one?"

Just because a play is "reviewed" doesn't mean play is haulted or suspended. They look at it between plays. I college, every play is reviewed and they stop play and take a closer look when there's a chance something might need a closer look for a possible reversal.
