Sean Payton says he’d “absolutely” be interested in contract extension

Sean Payton indicated Tuesday he would “absolutely” be interested in extending his contract beyond 2012, according to Mike Triplett of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

In most cities, this might not be big news. Every coach would like an extension. But there is a segment of Saints fans who are a little uneasy after Payton decided to move out of the city to Dallas during this offseason.

Payton indicated that the timing for a possible extension would likely come later in the offseason and said it was down the “to-do” list of priorities for the club this offseason.

If nothing else, this story points out Payton’s hold over the organization. In most places, coaches hope they can be kept around.

On the Saints, there’s a sense the team has to show they can keep Payton around.
