Panthers continue to keep their plans under wraps

Blaine Gabbert AP

Last week, Tom Sorensen of the Charlotte Observer seemed to be convinced that the Panthers had settled on Cam Newton as the player who’ll be taken with the top pick in the draft.

Now, Steve Reed of CarolinaGrowl.com writes that support for Newton has diminished, with the “current odds-on favorites” being quarterback Blaine Gabbert and defensive tackle Marcel Dareus.

So what does any of it mean?  It means that the Panthers are wisely keeping their options wide open, possibly in the hopes of being able to trade down a few spots and draft the best player who falls to them and then claim that he’s the guy they would have taken at No. 1.

And it would make sense for the Panthers to trade down.  They’ve got plenty of needs, and if they can rack up more picks they can fill more holes.

Who might they trade with? And what would they get for their pick

    Obligatory Jerry Richardson insult comment.
Wise =/= Anything to do with JR.

well yes.. except for the fact that no team is dumb enough to give up many picks to move to #1 when the top 5 picks are all interchangeable.

then again.. may be Al Davis is interested

This means they want Cam Newton but they think they know another top 5 pick that likes the other 2.

OR maybe the want the other pick to think they want Cam Newton to force them to trade up to number one to get him.

My money says the Panthers and the Bills make a trade involving the Panthers 1st round and the Bills 1st and 3rd/4th round picks. Bills take Newton, Denver takes Dareus, and Panthers take Gabbert at 3rd.

    Yeah, you heard me.

Does anyone know if an agent and the team can negotiate a contract for drafted players before a CBA is formed? Even if they do not sign it until the CBA is agreed upon. I am not thinking that would happen because of the possible rookie salary cap. Unless they pushed that into 2012. Reason I am asking is every year we have hold outs, and if this season doesn’t begin until mid to late August (for example) at the earliest, then we can probably expect very little contribution overall from this year’s rookies as they won’t even know the playbook, spend time with the coaches, or had time to get comfortable with the teammates they would join. So it might not matter who is drafted this year as that player may not have an opportunity to make much of an impact until 2012 season.

The Panthers should trade down for someone else’s 1st and 2nd rounders, but they won’t get as much as they would most other years when there is a more clear cut “stand-out” talent.

Trading Down!! How often does that happen?? Good luck finding a trade partner. There are NO repeat NO “Franchise” qb’s in this years draft, NONE!!! Patrick Peterson SHOULD be Carolina’s pick!!!

Trading down from the #1 pick hasn’t happened in awhile. Is there really a chance for it happen this year?

  10. thefiesty1 says: Mar 24, 2011 9:14 PM

Because the don’t have a clue. If they had a clue they wouldn’t have the number one pick.

Trading down probably wont happen for the panthers. A.J. Green would make a lot of sense for them if they move down a few spots. However, the popular opinion seems to be it was more of lack of a quarterback than wide receivers in Carolina. I think Dareus is the pick here if they stay at no.1

Everyone underestimate Gabbert. He is the alpha dog.

    that sounds incredibly stupid..

why would the bills trade up to #1 to draft newton? If the panthers were serious about newton, then they wouldn’t trade out out of the spot.

Conversely, if Buffalo really wanted Cam – more than likely he’ll still be there at #3.Hell i bet they could trade down to #10 even and I’d bet he’d still be there.

Buffalo needs to go defense anyway – don’t fix what ain’t broke…and that bottom of the league defense is no where near close to be on the same level as their offense

I remain convinced that the Panthers will not take Cam Newton with the 1 pick. And if they trade down even one spot, there would have to be a 2nd round pick involved.

Trade down, Marty Hurney. And take Peterson.

  15. armchairgm9 says: Mar 25, 2011 8:55 AM

Trading down happens as much as trading up happens…Think about it.

And trading down out of the #1 pick is tough. Teams will only do that if they believe there is a franchise player that they HAVE to have. I just don’t see there being a player projected like that right now (there’s always a few actual franchise players in every draft). And based on the trade value chart that teams go by, unless Carolina lowers their standards, they’ll be stuck with that 1st pick.

  16. finsbooyah says: Mar 25, 2011 10:09 AM

The only team I can see the Panthers trading with is New England. Think about it… 2 of the top players in the draft are at positions of need for the Patriots, A.J. Green (WR) and Patrick Peterson (CB), and the Pats have a ton of picks this year.

If they fall in love with one of those 2 guys, I can see them sending both of their 1st round picks along with one of their 3rd round choices to the Panthers. And if Carolina isn’t sold on anyone at #1, they’d probably love to collect those extra picks.
