Schefter predicts Cam Newton will be No. 1 overall pick

Cam Newton, Warren Moon AP

Late last February, ESPN’s Adam Schefter got the ball rolling nationally when he predicted Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford would be the Rams’ No. 1 pick in the draft.

It took Schefter just over a month longer this year. In a Q&A for ESPN.com Insider, Schefter predicts that Auburn quarterback Cam Newton will be this April’s top overall selection.

“Last week, I sensed Blaine Gabbert,” writes Schefter. “… This week, I’m more on the Cam Newton bandwagon. The more I hear, the more it sounds like Newton is the player to beat for the No. 1 pick.”

In addition to Carolina’s quarterback need, Schefter explains that the Panthers “need to create buzz to sell some tickets.” A controversial prospect but with unquestioned physical tools, Newton gives Jerry Richardson’s organization the best chance to do just that.

The news isn’t shocking. Newton went first in our latest mock draft, and he’ll remain in the top spot when our next one comes out, too.

So despite G.M. Marty Hurney’s defenses, Jimmy Clausen might be on his way out of Carolina.

According to Pro Football Weekly draft analyst Nolan Nawrocki, “there remains interest in the league for (Clausen’s) services,” if the Panthers decided to trade last year’s No. 48 overall pick.

As a Panthers fan I hope god can save us from this!

Last year Schefter reported the Bradford-to-Rams at #1 projection in late February as fact on WXOS radio. Not a feeling or a sense or anything, as locked in place.

This is different, probably in large part because Carolina likely hasn’t made their decision yet on who to take at #1 overall.

  3. hanktheking says: Mar 25, 2011 5:49 PM

They once said Vince Young was gonna sell tickets too. At least he created “buzz”.

  4. favresdong says: Mar 25, 2011 5:49 PM

I dont think anyone can know what position Newton will be selected, until the bank statments are shown revealing who paid the most to Cam’s dad.

What a wild & bold prediction, Schefter. No wonder ESPN hired you.

  6. captainwisdom8888 says: Mar 25, 2011 5:51 PM

Carolina could always trade the pick for Kolb and a 3rd rounder, and the Eagles could roll with Patrick Peterson…

  7. sah0620 says: Mar 25, 2011 5:51 PM

With the 1st Overall pick, the Carolina Panthers select…JaMarcus Russell.

I’m sure Schefter will take all the credit for this if it ends up true.

Even though as Evan pointed out, Schefter is way late to the Newton at #1 party.

  9. lowleadman says: Mar 25, 2011 6:05 PM

The Panthers will take Gabbert. The Bills will take Newton.

Wouldn’t he have to take a pay cut to go to the Panthers ?

  12. 2011to2020lions says: Mar 25, 2011 6:14 PM

Please take him, so we can have a run on qb’s this might just drop a few good players down the board

  13. handlethehandles says: Mar 25, 2011 6:28 PM

Hate to even type this…. but why are we not talking about Ryan Mallette… I mean pro style offense amazing arm… Why do I care about Dante Culpeper / Vince young / J Russel…

Honest football fans know QB’s need to have several attributes… Smart Arm strength throwing accuracy… So which one of those is Cam even average at?

  14. gugurich says: Mar 25, 2011 6:29 PM

I think it makes sense if the Panthers want to take a QB. Newton has his weaknesses but he has franchise-QB talent. Putting him up against Gabbert, they both have a long way to go coming from spread offenses and they’re both big and fast and possess strong arms. But Newton was a far better college player and is more gifted athletically. When it comes down to making a decision, I think a GM would go, “Are we really going to take a junior who wasn’t even all that good in college?”

  15. thefiesty1 says: Mar 25, 2011 6:32 PM

That guy changes his mind more than he changes his underware. Give him a couple of days and it will be someone else, not necessarily a QB.

  16. screamingsheep69 says: Mar 25, 2011 6:33 PM

Need to sell some tickets huh? Thats news to all us PSL owners. Maybe sell some concessions, beer, popcorn, or jerseys. Or maybe they are talking about the handful of tickets per game available in the corner of the upper reaches of the upper level.

  17. sailcharlotte says: Mar 25, 2011 6:34 PM

The panthers may pick cam, but not because they need to sell tickets. They sold out every game last year. If they don’t draft a qb, then Palmer, kolb, mcnabb, or hassleback would be enough to fire people up.

  18. sterilizecromartie says: Mar 25, 2011 6:49 PM

Eh, I’m gonna say Adam is wrong with this prediction. If Carolina goes QB it will probably be Gabbert. But I still think they should go with Green, Peterson, or one of the stud DTs.

  19. wryly1 says: Mar 25, 2011 6:54 PM

If I’m reading this correctly, he’s saying the owners need the players to sell tickets and generate revenue – and that replacement players in a lockout aren’t going to sell diddly-squat. Hellooo!

  20. mystereo says: Mar 25, 2011 6:57 PM

If Rivera goes with Newton, this will be the end of his NFL head coaching career.

The Panthers need to stock up on offensive and defensive linemen first. Then build out from there. This draft doesn’t have a franchise QB like Ryan, Stafford (when healthy) or Bradford.

Panthers need to be smart here and don’t fall for the popular pick. Everyone hated the Texans for drafting Mario Williams instead of Reggie Bush and Vince Young. That pick ended up being the turning point when the Texans started building a decent team.

  21. whywerule says: Mar 25, 2011 7:04 PM

That will be a shame for Panthers fans if that happens, because that will bury them for years.

The great thing about drafting Cam- I- Am Newton is you also draft his father along with his entire posse. This guy has more red flags than the chinese embassy……… even still some team is going to gamble big time …… then in 2-3 years wonder wa hapen.

So Cam is this year ‘Tim Tebow” to the second power. Good to know the media has intentionally turned this kid’s image into a controvertsial image for their selish gain. I guess it doesn’t take anything at all to be smeared by our media.

Good luck to u Cam…Hope u find a home that really needs and wants u and isn’t just using u like the sports media seem to suggest.

FYI, I trust nothing coming out of ESPN or the NFL. network.

I don’t agree with ur Cam Newton observation but I do like Mallett, so I share ur feel. I really feel he was did extremely wrong by the media and simply didn’t didn’t handle it well.

I wish him all the Best. He, Cam, Jake, and Ponder, I feel should be vying for that top spot. Don’t know where Blaine came from. I guess getting the inside agent does work wonders for u rising up the Draft board.

Yeah that’s it – the Texans build a pretty good team by not drafting Bush or VY. They are a pretty good 8-8 team and maybe they will actual go 9-7 one of these years. How many playoff games has Mario gotten them. Bush helped his team to the SB and Vince has a winning record and been all pro (more than once).

The Panthers need a QB, but they have MANY other needs.

“Panthers need to be smart here and don’t fall for the popular pick. Everyone hated the Texans for drafting Mario Williams instead of Reggie Bush and Vince Young. That pick ended up being the turning point when the Texans started building a decent team.”

This comment is hilarious. The Texans selected Mario Williams and still have the worst defense in the league. The Texans drafted Mario Williams as the number one pick and didn’t build a defense to compliment him. Now that is a waste of pick.

Believe it or not, Cam Newton and Mallet makes sense for the Panthers. Carolina passing on Newton would be like the Trail Blazers passing on Michael Jordan.

The Panthers are not a lousy organization, if they draft Newton, then they’ll pick up a veteran QB like Palmer or McNabb. They will not make the same mistake the Titans and Raiders did by letting the rookies start right away.

  30. stixzidinia says: Mar 25, 2011 9:05 PM

And, thus, the cycle will continue of the dregs of the league remaining dregs. JaMarcus Newton without the lard.

Hmmm. First you say the “Mario hasn’t gotten them any playoff wins”……and then out of the other side of your mouth you say Bush HELPED his team to a SB. So it’s up to Williams to do it all himself but Bush only has to be a team player. Nice. Not Williams’ fault his organization couldn’t put anybody around him on defense. Meanwhile, Bush has one of the best QB’s in the league and impressive firepower all around him AND a solid Defense. As for Vince, nobody is knocking on that “all pro’s” door these days. Dude doesn’t have a team and doesn’t look like he’ll be a starter anywhere next year either.

“Believe it or not, Cam Newton and Mallet makes sense for the Panthers. Carolina passing on Newton would be like the Trail Blazers passing on Michael Jordan”.

What a stupid comparison, especially in 2 different sports. Mallet stock is constantly falling week by week. He isn’t worth the #1 overall pick. But if they could somehow regain a 2nd rounder, then it would be good to draft him there.

Cam N is at best a 2-3yr project, you don’t draft project in the top 5. You draft in the top 10 for day 1 starters/upgrade a need on your team. When was the last time a player selected in the top 5 sat and learn?

“The Panthers are not a lousy organization, if they draft Newton, then they’ll pick up a veteran QB like Palmer or McNabb. They will not make the same mistake the Titans and Raiders did by letting the rookies start right away.”

Mike Brown isn’t going to trade Palmer, so he’s out the picture. Palmer is probably ready to file for retirement. Would McNabb go to a rebuilding team or a team that can “win now”? Clearly a team who can “win now” such as the Vikings, Cardinals etc etc.

If Newton or Gabbert are selecting #1 overall, they will play rightaway. If not what a waisted pick who needs to sit and learn, when they could have drafted a player who can start day 1. I take my chances in 2012 with Luck, Barkley, and Jones potentially declaring for the draft who will be way better than Newton and Gabbert.

  33. CKL says: Mar 25, 2011 9:42 PM

I would be very very surprised if they would draft a guy @ #1 with all the character concerns Newton has. VERY surprised. They’ve never done that under Hurney. You’re talking about a team that all on their own benched their most productive offensive player to that date for 2 games to start 08. If they do that, I would say Rivera has a lot of pull that Fox didn’t or different standards than Fox did.

  34. paul82461 says: Mar 25, 2011 9:46 PM

Seriously, do you think Newton is worth all the hype? He is a future Diva, I think he’d rather be in the movies.

  35. gopanthers12 says: Mar 25, 2011 9:51 PM

package the #1 and steve smith. get a lower 1st round pick to get a good d linemen and get christian ponder in the 2nd or third round……smitty is done in carolina….he moved back to calif. and isn’t coming back. ponder is smart, mobile and had jimbo fisher as a qb coach.

  36. joshsmith199065 says: Mar 25, 2011 10:24 PM

“package the #1 and steve smith. get a lower 1st round pick to get a good d linemen”

For one you can’t trade players for picks without no CBA. Secondly if they are going to trade down, how about stay in the top 5? Would be a smart instead of trading for a lower 1st round.

Rumors has it Ponder has raise his draft to potentially be a late 1st rounder. If he does make it in the 2nd round, he will be taken early. So he won’t be there in the 3rd round, but anything can happend come draft day though.

  37. denverhighrize says: Mar 25, 2011 11:35 PM

Cam is by far the best athlete QB in the draft. Better to go wrong with than Blaine Gabbert. Cam, I think, is much better than Vince Young and he has a Michael Vick like arm. If you are going to roll some dice then go with this guy. To Jimmy Clausen…you may be good one day but you sat there with this smug I’m so good look and you know what, the NFL is hard. Basically it isn’t the Panther front office that isn’t sold on him, it’s the Panther players and that filtered upward.

  38. thefiesty1 says: Mar 25, 2011 11:49 PM

I guess some of you people think that a perennial 8-8 team is good. Some teams (Texans) will continue to be mediocre at 8-8 or on a good year 9-7 and never make the playoffs. The owner, coaches and draft picks (past and future) will insure that.

  39. mystereo says: Mar 26, 2011 12:39 AM

This comment is incredibly moronic. Sure, go ahead and draft Cam and watch him run for his life while throwing INTs all over the field while his father makes an ass of himself. Go ahead and draft pothead Mallett (AKA Ryan Leaf 2.0) and deal with all of his personality issues.

Mario has become a Pro-Bowler and a top DE in the NFL. The Texans have hired Wade Phillips who will definitely improve the D overall.

Where’s VY? Oh yeah, he’s unemployed since Bud Adams has already said he won’t be with the team any longer. Where’s Reggie Bush? He still hasn’t rushed for more than 600 yards, his rush total has dropped 4 straight seasons and he finished 2010 with a measly 150 yards on the ground.

The Panthers picking up Palmer? LOL. Good one, loser. Mike Brown isn’t even entertaining offers.

McNabb? I guess you missed the part where McNabb was replaced by Rex Grossman!

You are one dumb piece of crap. Thanks for the laugh though. All of your points have been thoroughly trashed.

“This comment is hilarious. The Texans selected Mario Williams and still have the worst defense in the league. The Texans drafted Mario Williams as the number one pick and didn’t build a defense to compliment him. Now that is a waste of pick.

I predict that Adam Schefter will be dead wrong…

If I were a Carolina Panther fan, I’d be rooting for Patrick Peterson or Marcell Dareus- A great player to build a defense around, but will keep the offense poor enough to position you for Andrew Luck in 2012…

  41. thespeaker08 says: Mar 26, 2011 2:13 AM

Schefter also works for ESPN so I feel inclined to think oppositely.

  42. joecoz17 says: Mar 26, 2011 10:31 AM

we will have a better chance of succeeding in buffalo. Better situation for him.

  43. ilduce24 says: Mar 26, 2011 11:10 AM

Yeah, since he predicted the number one pick last year (which was pretty obvious to me at least), now everyone thinks he is some all knowing psychic on number one picks. I like Schefter just as much as the next guy but last week he says, they will definitely take a quarterback number one (again not unheard my mock draft and other people’s mocks have had them going QB long before he said that), and that he had a feeling it was going to be Gabbert (which at the time more people were thinking Newton over Gabbert to the Panthers), and now this week since everyone is thinking Gabbert, he says now he’s feeling Newton (and next week he’ll be feeling Gabbert again). Really should be taken with a grain of salt, basically has a 50-50 chance so it’s not that altruistic. Plus, I don’t know why people even mock non-quarterbacks number one anymore, 10 out of the past 13 years a quarterback has gone number one with the only exceptions being 2000 (Cleveland Browns draft Courtney Brown since that had taken Tim Couch number one the year before), 2006 (Texans drafted Mario Williams, still had faith in David Carr), 2008 (Dolphins drafted Jake Long (total Parcells move) and are paying for it with Chad Henne instead of Matt Ryan). So, yes they will go QB number one, will it be Newton or Gabbert…who knows? Arguments for both make sense, but Cam Newton was the original idea of the QB who would go first not Gabbert, so this is nothing new.

  44. feldman9000 says: Mar 27, 2011 3:09 PM

This is ESPN’s doing to create hype. Peterson plz, kthx.

  45. chazatlas says: Mar 28, 2011 7:23 PM

Attention all idiots- Carolina is not going to have the #1 pick in 2012 so stop already with the nonsense of drafting Andrew Luck. And for all you Cam Newton haters out there, Cam will be a better NFL QB than Luck will. Luck doesn’t have the passion for the NFL that you think.
