PETA asks EA Sports to remove Vick from Madden cover contest

Michael Vick is one of 16 NFL players who advanced to the second round of the “tournament” that EA Sports is holding to determine who will be on the cover of this year’s Madden video game. The folks at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals are not happy about that.

EA Sports President Peter Moore says PETA has urged his company to take Vick out of the March Madness-style bracket, in which 32 NFL players are matched up, with fans voting online to decide who advances to the next round. Vick won his first-round matchup and is now paired with Andre Johnson in the second round.

“I can tell you we’ve already received the letters from our good friends at PETA urging us to take him out of the bracket,” Moore said at the World Congress of Sports, via CNBC. “I’m not here to comment on what he did. I personally believe, and this is personal commentary right now, that Michael served his time. He’s had a tremendous season.”

Moore says EA isn’t making value judgments. It just tried to pick 32 good players and let the fans take it from there.

“We believe that Michael Vick, as the runner-up in MVP for the league and the comeback player of the year, deserved his slot,” Moore said.

So if PETA doesn’t want Vick on the cover of the Madden game, a letter-writing campaign to EA Sports isn’t going to get the job done. Instead, PETA should urge its members to vote for Andre Johnson.

Peta loves to flex it’s muscles.

  2. skins359 says: Mar 30, 2011 5:56 PM

    Ummm, good luck with that?

  3. skins359 says: Mar 30, 2011 5:57 PM

Actually if PETA really hated Vick they would root for him to win the contest.

  4. twindaddy says: Mar 30, 2011 6:00 PM

When is PETA gonna get over this? It’s been 4 freakin years now.

  5. mharenza says: Mar 30, 2011 6:01 PM

Doesn’t PETA have any chicken farms to infiltrate or something?

  6. itsmebobd says: Mar 30, 2011 6:01 PM

Good old peta, bunch of extremist idiots. They are against animal testing too, but the president of PETA takes medication that was tested on animals. When asked about this, they said it was “ok because they need me here to help save the animals” …. Double Standard anyone?

  7. vicktator says: Mar 30, 2011 6:02 PM

As an Eagles fan, I also ask them to remove him.

  8. drgreenstreak says: Mar 30, 2011 6:02 PM

I used not like PETA. Then, Vick was born.

  9. kspl1 says: Mar 30, 2011 6:03 PM

PETA should focus on helping animals that are being hurt today. Not dwelling in the past being attention whores every time vicks name is mentioned. Get over it, it’s very old news

  10. selgaeinla says: Mar 30, 2011 6:03 PM

PETA is upset that Vick is now going to prisons to help men better their lives and not attending their “free the egg laying hens” rallies.

  11. freedomispopular says: Mar 30, 2011 6:04 PM

That’s toobad the 12th man got eliminated. I was hoping we could stick it to the greedy rich folks.

    PETA……child please.

  13. benh999 says: Mar 30, 2011 6:07 PM

Although I personally like him more for it, it is kind of funny how no one is complaining about Johnson being in the running, despite smacking the s— out of Cortland Finnegan on the field.

  14. prnandhomeless says: Mar 30, 2011 6:10 PM

Or Peta should make a big stink about it, giving Vick even more publicity.

That’s a great idea. Also this, from Wikipedia about how awesome Peta is:

“PETA opposes the no kill movement. The group takes in feral cat colonies with diseases such as feline AIDS and leukemia, stray dogs, litters of parvo-infected puppies, and backyard dogs, and says that it would be unrealistic to follow a no-kill policy in such instances.[71] They offer free euthanasia services to counties that kill unwanted animals via gassing or shooting—they recommend the use of an intravenous injection of sodium pentobarbital if administered by a trained professional, and for severely ill or dying pets when euthanasia at a veterinarian is unaffordable.[72] They recommend euthanasia for certain breeds, such as pit bull terriers, and in certain situations for animals in shelters: for example, for those living for long periods in cramped cages.[73]
Two PETA employees were acquitted in 2007 of animal cruelty after at least 80 euthanized animals were left in dumpsters in a shopping center in Ashoskie over the course of a month in 2005; the two employees were seen leaving behind 18 dead animals, and 13 more were found inside their van. The animals had been euthanized after being removed from shelters in Northampton and Bertie counties.[74][75] The group said it began euthanizing animals in some rural North Carolina shelters after it found the shelters killing animals in ways PETA considered inhumane.[76]”

  16. terrellblowens says: Mar 30, 2011 6:16 PM

I’d rather have Vick lose the voting so he doesn’t fall victim to the cover curse but PETA is just annoying. They eat dog meat in some countries around the world. That’s probably a more worthwhile cause to protest for them than a damn video game cover

  17. giveseanpaytonhisjuicyfruit says: Mar 30, 2011 6:18 PM

  18. nagaswan says: Mar 30, 2011 6:21 PM

Michael Vick is def a piece of sheit. And his fans are A-holes. Deal with it. P.S. PETA is worthless, but animals are cool.

  19. bluefan204 says: Mar 30, 2011 6:22 PM

Put him on there. The curse will take care of everything.

  20. Tim says: Mar 30, 2011 6:22 PM

  21. tinytim4115 says: Mar 30, 2011 6:22 PM

    i voted for Johnson anyway….

  22. johnnyb216 says: Mar 30, 2011 6:25 PM

I admire PETAS cause, but I lost most of my respect for them when they tried to convince Ben & Jerrys to use breast milk in their ice cream. No joke. When I first read that, I thought it was an article out of the onion. These people are nuts.

  24. touchdownroddywhite says: Mar 30, 2011 6:29 PM

Considering Vick has to contend with Brees and Rivers/Peterson.(Brees will easily beat Sanchez), I doubt he’ll even make it to the final to be squashed by Rodgers/Ryan.

Besides, being on the Madden cover has literally never done anything for any player other than guarantee a lack of success the following year.

On that note, here’s to Rodgers or Brees winning!

  25. touchdownroddywhite says: Mar 30, 2011 6:32 PM

I take that back. Vick would slaughter Ryan in a voting contest.

Temporary lapse of judgement, since I’m a Falcon’s fan, but truth be told, Vick is way more popular, even post-scandal.

  26. emperor83 says: Mar 30, 2011 6:39 PM

As much as I dislike Vick, I hate PETA more. So I guess the enemy of my enemy is my friend. I won’t be going against Michael Vick for the rest of the contest.

  27. j0esixpack says: Mar 30, 2011 6:43 PM

Vick served his time as judged by a court of law

Whether he served enough time in the court of public opinion is another question.

I suppose this vote/contest will illustrate how people feel about that…

And PETA members are welcome to vote on this as well!

  28. airraid77 says: Mar 30, 2011 6:46 PM

PETA needs to be re spelled pita…..cause that is all they really are……ITS AN ANIMAL……..not a human being……but then again look who we are talking about.

  29. terrellochouno says: Mar 30, 2011 6:48 PM

Screw that, let him lose the contest fair & square.

  30. packa7x says: Mar 30, 2011 6:52 PM

When PETA stops murdering scientists, then we’ll talk.

  31. bucks12965 says: Mar 30, 2011 6:54 PM

Hey PETA…just show us some mostly naked hot chicks & pedal your stupid “I’d rather be naked than…” slogans.

You don’t actually influence anyone to do anything.

  32. moosewolsey says: Mar 30, 2011 6:57 PM

  34. garyman1 says: Mar 30, 2011 7:00 PM

I guess they might have a problem if it’s ever a Green Bay Packer since the entire team is named after meat packers. Doesn’t bother me…I’ll just enjoy my juicy, flavorful hamburger while playing

  35. 3octaveFart says: Mar 30, 2011 7:03 PM

    PETA is becoming a PITA.

  36. pkrjones says: Mar 30, 2011 7:04 PM

This is the same PETA that’s offering the winner of a contest a free vasectomy, in an attempt to limit HUMAN population because humans are the scourge of the earth and making life difficult for animals.

Sure PETA, we’re with WHATEVER you wish.

  37. choice1329 says: Mar 30, 2011 7:05 PM

Jeffrey Nalley was just recently charged with mutilating and skinning over 29 dogs, right there in VA not far from the PETA headquarters. Why aren’t they their protesting him, or attending to his court appearances. This just happened a few week ago and they are still worried about what Vick did five yrs ago. That just tells me what the real deal is about PETA and the other animal rights groups, they are full of it.

  38. barnes28 says: Mar 30, 2011 7:07 PM

I’m voting for Vick just to piss off PETA

  39. airraid77 says: Mar 30, 2011 7:12 PM

    that is hillarious….
how is it that a board that is sponsored by the most liberal news network on the planet, has so many conservative minds? OH wait, football is an AMERICAN THING….not euro or euroasian thing…. more importantly a capitalist thing.

  40. airraid77 says: Mar 30, 2011 7:14 PM

who says americans are racist? I guarantee the majority here are caucasion……and 99 pct of the post to one degree or another support vick.

  41. mick730 says: Mar 30, 2011 7:16 PM

I hate what Vick did to all those dogs and cats as well, but there is nothing I can do about it, and it is between the Eagles and Vick, not me, about whether or not he plays football. I don’t have to like Vick, and I don’t, but he doesn’t need my permission to play football, or do anything else that is legal.

As for Peta, my only experience with them was one day coming out of the grocery store. A woman approached me with a petition to stop animal cruelty. I told her that I would sign her petition but not if she was with PETA. She assured me she was not. I got to the car and I remembered I had forgot to buy one thing that was on the list. As I was walking back in the store, I heard the same woman tell another customer that she was with PETA. I asked the manager if he knew who she was with, since she was approaching his customers. He told me that she could do that without his permission, but that she was with PETA. So, she lied to me to get my signature.

Anyway, I think they might have some people who really care about animals, but I think they also have a bunch of fruit loops with no more connection to reality than the NFLPA.

  42. qj1984 says: Mar 30, 2011 7:27 PM

I dont doubt that there is a need for an organization like PETA. But its becoming harder and harder to respect them and take them seriously when all they do is ride the coattails of high profile cases. They are like the Al Sharpton for animals. There are animals that get abused by their owners everyday and PETA is nowhere to be found. Let that owner be Michael Vick or some other high profile person and they are all over it. Did PETA give a damn when a lesser known Jonathan Babineaux was accused of beating his pit bull to death? In the last year, in the Greensboro area, we’ve had several dogs burned and alive and none of the culprits have been brought to justice. Not a word about that from PETA. No help trying to bring the culprits to justice or pushing North Carolina’s new animal cruelty law.

  43. blackuhuru4u says: Mar 30, 2011 7:37 PM

  44. usmutts says: Mar 30, 2011 7:38 PM

Hey, airraid, so you think pro football is a “capitalist thing”? Wow. Is it the way players are drafted by one team and not allowed to sell their services on the open market that convinces you? Or is the way the team owners share revenues ( the wealth ) that convinces you?

  45. whooligun says: Mar 30, 2011 7:40 PM

Typical brainless comments. If you knew or cared about how your daily meat consumption was derived, then you’d probably end up a vegetarian. If it wasn’t for groups like PETA, then we’d probably be eating ground up old people. The “evil corporations” who control most of what we eat, watch, and know about “reality” are so successful in their smear campaigns, and all these moronic comments are just proof. If you have, or have ever owned a pet, how can you not understand what PETA is trying to accomplish? Vick is a douche bag, and that should NEVER be forgotten.

  46. usmutts says: Mar 30, 2011 7:44 PM

Or, airraid, is it the way state and local governments build stadiums with govenment money ( you know, taxpayer’s dollars ) and oftentimes spend more government money ( more taxpayer dollars ) paying the owners to play their games there so that the owners can made zillions directly and indirectly off the government money?

  47. goldnd says: Mar 30, 2011 7:53 PM

It’s a joke people actually think Vick has changed. It’s also a joke people are rewarding him and calling him a “Hero” and role model. Doesn’t everyone that goes to prison and gets out and returns to work get awards and get to be called a Hero? What a joke.

  57. whatswiththehate says: Mar 30, 2011 9:15 PM

PETA is as fake as heck. It’s funny that they feel it’s their job to tell others what to do. If they truly gave a damn about animals be will be out resuing them instead of attacking celebrities and athletes. Talk about using a serious cause to push your own selfish agenda.

  58. thefiesty1 says: Mar 30, 2011 9:34 PM

Whether PETA or you guys want to admit it or not. Every animal (dogs included) were put on this earth for food for us (no I don’t think I would like the taste of dog but it also means I cant comment as I have never tried and also never will…) If PETA is trying to run a no meat eating campaign then it goes against everything that’s even in the bible.

What Vick did was wrong. But I also think we are too close to dogs as well. Have respect for the animal but actually controlling them and owning them and being their master like we have any right. Having pets to me is wrong (yes I’m guilty too like most everyone but I still think its morally wrong). Heck a dog cant even roam the earth without being picked up and caged and tooken to an animal shelter. Yeah we really care about animals alright!!!

  73. stp479 says: Mar 31, 2011 11:20 PM

Has anyone here seen the vids where Mike Vick puts a noose around the dog and strings him up and strangles him, or better yet sticks a 110 volt live wire onto him until he dies of electrocution? Just saying maybe he’s not the guy for our kids to be looking to as an example. What he did is not the sort of thing you can just wash away with a little jail time… the stink and the stain is permanent.
