They do not need to change the rules because under the league rules it was a catch. This has all been posturing to cover up a bigger problem. The more popular a team and the larger the market for the team, the more favoritism the team will get. That is why Brady gets the benefit of flags whenever a defender gets near him and Pittsburgh get the ball back when they fumble on 4th down into the end zone. (By the way it was great to see what happens to Pittsburgh when the refs are forced to call an even game because the other team is just as popular i.e. Green Bay in the Super Bowl. If GB did not lose so many players at the half, it would have been an embarrassing stomping.)

The NFL rule on POSSESSION:
“A player is in possession when he is in firm grip and control of the ball inbounds. To gain possession of a loose ball that has been caught, intercepted or recovered, a player must have complete control of the ball and have both feet completely on the ground inbounds or any other part of his body, other than his hands, on the ground inbounds.”

Lets see control of the ball. Check. He had so much control he intentionally switched hands to protect it from the defender. Two feet inbounds. Check. Two feet and a butt.

“If the player loses the ball while simultaneously touching both feet or any other part of his body to the ground or if there is any doubt that the acts were simultaneous, there is no possession. This rule applies to the field of play and in the end zone.”

Check. He did not “lose” possession of the ball until two feet down, a fall, a butt touching, rolling over on his side, and then starting to get up. Complete control the whole time. Now touchdowns.

The rules will never be well defined because the the league would be able to rig games if the rules were cut and dry.

The Lions lost 4 games to bad officiating in 2010, twice to the Bears.

It's not an accident that the same teams (PIT NE, CHI, NYG, NYJ, PHI, ect) always get the bad calls in their favor... usually at the expense of the same handful of small market teams. (BUF, DET, CIN, CLE, MIN, HOU, ect.)

The sad part is, most fans are either too dumb to realize it's rigged, or in a lot of cases, they just don't care.

bhindenemylines says: Mar 30, 2011 3:22 PM

This rule makes no sense.

If the play is over when a runner breaks the plane of the goal line and it is a TD then the rules should be the same for a receiver who has established possession of the ball with two feet in bounds.

----------------------------------------------------

I think that statement defines the confusion for those that don't understand the rule. The rule is the same in both cases. But it's the process of catching the ball while going to the ground that defines "establishing possession." Until the the catch is complete, there is no possession, and can be no TD.

No matter how anybody wants to change the rule, there is always going to be confusion and disagreement on whether the process of catching a pass is complete.
