Louis Murphy arrested on multiple charges in Florida

Oakland Raiders v Jacksonville Jaguars Getty Images

Raiders receiver Louis Murphy, a mid-round pick in 2009 who has dramatically outperformed 2009 first-rounder Darrius Heyward-Bey, has gotten into trouble for having in Murphy’s possession medication relating to an entirely different kind of performance.

The Gainesville Sun (via ShotofGinn.com) reports that Murphy has been arrested in Florida for possession of a drug without a valid prescription, failure to obey a police officer, and resisting arrest without violence.  All charges are misdemeanors.

The drug that he possessed without a prescription was (wait for it . . . literally) Viagra.

After Murphy allegedly resisted arrest, he consented to a search of his Escalade, in which police found an unlabeled bottle containing 11 Viagra pills.  Murphy allegedly couldn’t provide a prescription and he allegedly told the police that he had removed the label “because he did not want his girlfriend to know he had a prescription for it.”

If he truly has a prescription for it, that should be easy to prove with a phone call or two.  And if it’s a crime to carry pills in an unlabeled and without a copy of the prescription, then lock me up and throw away the key, since I’ve been chronically toting Singulair all over the place in identical fashion.

To us, it sound more like the police had a [term that would have double meaning based on the involvement of Viagra omitted] for Murphy, since he allegedly didn’t pull over when directed and allegedly refused to put his hands behind his back when they were arresting him for allegedly not pulling over.

While a student at the University of Florida, Murphy was arrested for possession of marijuana.  He later vowed to turn his life around, after his mother was diagnosed for a second time with cancer in 2007.

We’ve got a feeling that there’s another side to this story, and we won’t be surprised if the charges ultimately are dropped.  We’ve seen too many accounts like this over the years that result in the whole thing going away.

But rarely within four hours.

Louis found out the pills didn’t change his sex life at all. But they did cause him to look older and distinguished, miss appointments, and smile conspiratorially at his girlfriend a lot.

What have I been saying about players today unable and unwilling to show respect, common sense, decency, responsibility, and follow the law.

They were “helped” through grade school, high school, and college and never taught by their teachers, coaches or parents what it means to accept responsibility for their actions and that they are not entitled to act any way they want.

Another example of a player tarnishing the leagues image, but wanting 50% of the income.

This has to be hard-on him ;)

  16. livenbreathefootball says: Apr 3, 2011 6:03 PM

Something definitely is not right here. If the cops were arresting him, they didn’t need his permission to search the car. In which case, they knew the original arrest wouldn’t hold up so they asked his permission. If they knew the original arrest was no good, they should have stopped right there, written him a ticket and let him go on his way.

  20. thejuddstir says: Apr 3, 2011 6:35 PM

  21. tfbuckfutter says: Apr 3, 2011 6:40 PM

Anyone who has ever had to see Al Davis in person should automatically be given a life time prescription for Viagra.

I can’t imagine “it” would ever work again otherwise.

Erik Ainge gets busted numerous times during his self desbribed 10+ year addiction to heroin, meth, massive illegal amonts of prescription drugs..etc..etc and each time Ainge is either driven home or allowed to be taken home by friends. Yet when his story appears here most responses are prayers and good luck to him on his sobriety. I was one of those well wishers. But I was also stunned by his treatment by police ,the administration at UT, AND THE MEFIA. On the other hand Louis Murphy is arrested for having viagra?! Has his name dragged through the mud and and becomes a joke by the public. This issue of who is allowed to escape prosecution and who is prosecuted to the full ectent of the law is something that warrents investigation.

    Willie Wood?

Meanwhile, I always thought that drugs like Viagra were specifically tailored to be performance-enhancing supplements for football players.

Why, Mike Ditka even endorsed one called Levitra. The ad showed an older Gary Hogeboom-type quarterback gaining increasingly sharper accuracy firing footballs through a tire as his smiling daughter looked on. Another player, a defensive lineman, displayed the weirdest 5-point stance that I’ve ever seen. Go figure.

And “Ms. Cheerleader” here has never defended a player causing trouble. I’ve only defended the other 1699 players you always damn along with the guy getting arrested. But in this case, I agree with Mike. Sounds like an overzealous cop. Relative of yours?

    So good morning, good morning,

it doesn’t matter if you give the police consent or not they are gonna search your vehicle anyway… and if there are no cameras or audio from the arrest there’s no way to prove it… it’s your word against theirs… and who do you think the judge will believe??? you guessed it… the police! take it from experience… i was pulled over and never told why they did… asked 15 or 20 times as polite as i could… took about 15 mins to make up a BS excuse that my tailight was out… guess what? IT WAS NEVER OUT! was sober as can be… had 6 cops show up to my vehicle… no probable cause… no smell of alcohol or anything else… asked to step out of the car, asked if they could walk a K-9 around my vehicle… i told them they could if they made it quick cuz i would like to be on my way… then asked if they could search my vehicle… i said not unless you have a good reason, probable cause, or beyond a reasonable doubt that i was doing something illegal… which i wasnt… told me they were gonna search it anyway… told them i’d like to call my lawyer since my rights were being violated and the civil liberties statute states they must let me be on my way if there is nothing to keep me… guess what? they went in anyway… flipped everything in my car upside down and made ME clean it up… found a smidgeon of pot on my floor… and arrested me (and i mean a very small trace amount) who knows if it was even mine? bottom line… the police will do whatever it takes to make a name for themselves or screw someone over… they will do what they want when they want and unless you have multiple witnesses or video footage… your screwed… if they really wanna get into your vehicle, THEY WILL, no amount of lawyers could help me even though they were not in the right… yeah it was my fault for not having my car clean and tidy at the time but i wasn’t in the act of using or anything… without any proof THEY illegally searched and seized… thank you po-po for screwing over someone who once believed in you.. now i don’t trust ANY POLICE, PERIOD! if it’s nighttime and they try and pull me over in a dark area, im gonna keep driving until i find some light… guess what? i’ll be arrested then too for not pulling over right away… any which way you look at it your screwed.. the main purpose for a lighted area was because there are many people posing as police out there and are making victims out of innocent people… as long as im not running… don’t think it should be a problem… but that’s not the way they look at it and they screw innocent people all the time… for any police officers reading this and DON’T take advantage of peoples rights… hats off to you… but to all those who abuse their authority… “FORGET YOUUUUUU!”
