Mike Mayock could join NFL Network booth

NFL Network has one of the best analysts in the business on its roster in Mike Mayock, so it only makes sense that the network might move him into its most prominent position, working in the booth during live broadcasts of regular-season games.

Peter King writes in today’s Monday Morning Quarterback column that there’s likely to be a change in the Thursday night announcer lineup for NFL Network games this fall, and that change could mean Mayock in the booth.

What’s not clear is what that would mean for last season’s analysts, Joe Theismann and Matt Millen. Maybe that means Theismann and Millen are both out, maybe they’d move to the sideline, maybe one of them would stay and work as a co-analyst with Mayock in a three-man booth. But it appears that a change is coming.

And a change should come. Frankly, Theismann and Millen just weren’t a very good pair of analysts on the NFL Network broadcast team. They didn’t have much chemistry together and didn’t offer the kind of Xs and Os insight that Mayock delivers so brilliantly.

Also, while this isn’t completely fair to Theismann and Millen, their pasts may be coming back to haunt them. Theismann got pushed out of the Monday Night Football booth in favor of Ron Jaworski, and Jaworski is so clearly superior in the same role that it makes it hard to think of Theismann as anything other than second-rate. And Millen, as president of the Detroit Lions, was nothing short of the worst front-office decision-maker in NFL history. Millen was always fine as a broadcaster before taking the job in Detroit, but knowing that he wrecked the Lions makes it difficult to respect his opinions.

Mayock has no such baggage, and he has earned a high-profile role. The best move NFL Network could make would be to go back to a two-man booth, teaming play-by-play man Bob Papa with Mayock.

Millen and Theisman are to football as to Buck and MacCarver (sp) are to baseball. It is almost a requirement to hit mute when they are on.

  2. FinFan68 says: Apr 11, 2011 11:20 AM

Mayock is outstanding, both as an analyst and as part of a broadcast team. He is not right 100% of the time but he is a hell of a lot closer than any of the other guys on any network.

  3. RedHeadedBastard says: Apr 11, 2011 11:22 AM

Just please be better than Joe T and Matt Millen, that is all that I ask of you Mayock.

  4. nyjalleffingday says: Apr 11, 2011 11:23 AM

Theismann is absolute GARBAGE. This is almost universally agreed on, he’s awful. Millen is another story as well.

  5. dgforreal says: Apr 11, 2011 11:24 AM

    Sweet. I like Mayock.

  6. ttommytom says: Apr 11, 2011 11:25 AM

Mayock and Davis both spend endless hours watching college players and thus they know the history of each NFL player. Way more than any present commentator.

Mayock knows how to break away from the history of the player and it is something Davis is learning to do. Mayock deserves it and Davis might earn it one day too.

    A welcome change because…

ANYTHING IS BETTER THAN THEEEEESMAN and the bad GM.

  7. waitingguilty says: Apr 11, 2011 11:25 AM

I had to mute the sound on the NFLN broadcasts because listening to Millen and Joey T. was unbearable to me.

I really hope they are both gone, and yes, Mayock and Papa would be great.

  8. pftard says: Apr 11, 2011 11:26 AM

NHL Playoffs are about to begin…, not missing the NFL at all. Some of the best action, chasing the most revered and coveted trophy in all sports.

    Just sayin’

  9. flyinhighwithvick says: Apr 11, 2011 11:37 AM

Mayock knows what he’s talking about. His lisp gets a little annoying. Anyone is better than the crap they’ve had on Thursday nights over the last few years. Gumbel, Theisman and Millen, MUTE!

White people love Wayne Brady, because he makes Bryant Gumbel look like Malcom X. – Chappelle Show.

  10. jameswestphal says: Apr 11, 2011 11:37 AM

    Can’t get any worse

  11. MichaelEdits says: Apr 11, 2011 11:39 AM

What makes you think Millen doesn’t have another GM gig lined up?

  12. upperdecker19 says: Apr 11, 2011 11:39 AM

Bring back Bryant Gumble, too. To tell us all about Dallas Cowboys’ QB “Rick Romo”.

  13. canadaramsfan says: Apr 11, 2011 11:42 AM

thank god they were awful, atleast mayock isnt a idiot

    Lets hope so.

If Mayock starts announcing games then I won’t have to mute the sound for all of them.

  16. egls7 says: Apr 11, 2011 11:48 AM

Thank you! He was great when commentating on the seahawk-saint game

  17. njdevil7 says: Apr 11, 2011 11:49 AM

Smartest thing NFL Network has done since, well, hiring Mike Mayock.

  18. DonRSD says: Apr 11, 2011 11:50 AM

PAPA & MAYOCK WOULD BE A GREAT COMBO.

NOW THE MAIN PART………………WHY DOESNT NFL NETWORK OFFER GAMES IN DOLBY DIGITAL????
STEREO SOUND FOR AN HD BROADCAST IS UNACCEPTABLE

  19. cmich2006 says: Apr 11, 2011 11:57 AM

Theismann blows but Millen isn’t that bad. Mayock is the best int he business right now.

  20. Jay says: Apr 11, 2011 11:57 AM

I swear they could put a kumquat and watermelon up in the booth and it would be a step up from anyone the NFLN has trotted out so far.

Having said that Mayock has been one of the best on the network. He doesn’t aggrandize or yuk it up like the rest there.

He’s WYSIWYG. Which is refreshing for a network of “hey remember me when I actually was worth your attention” type guys.

  21. chatham10 says: Apr 11, 2011 12:00 PM

I hope it is just Mayock as they do not need three in the booth.

  22. tombradyswig says: Apr 11, 2011 12:05 PM

    DING DING DING DING DING

Matt Millen, please fall off the face of the earth!!!!!

  23. thehighhat says: Apr 11, 2011 12:06 PM

After what Millen did to the Lions and the City of Detriot, there should be a lifetime ban on him talking about NFL football. I feel this way and I’m not even a Lions fan!

  24. cmstrick says: Apr 11, 2011 12:09 PM

Mayock would be an AWESOME addition in the booth. Millen, actually, isn’t as bad as I would have thought. Theismann needs to go. One of the worst in the business and has been for a long, long time.

  25. sportsmediacritic says: Apr 11, 2011 12:10 PM

Mayock is a horrible draft analyst in my opinion, HOWEVER, he is one of best booth guys. His call of the Marshawn Lynch epic run was one of the best calls I’ve heard in the past 10 years. His “Get Off Me!!!” call was classic and will never be forgotten here in Seattle.

Mayock you join a booth and stay there. He really knows how to analyze a game.

  26. jw731 says: Apr 11, 2011 12:12 PM

I would rather listen to Pee Wee h\Herman announce an NFL game than Theismann……Without a doubt…..The Worst EVER……

  27. brewcityitalian says: Apr 11, 2011 12:14 PM

    Mayock would be awesome !

Millen needs to get fired, and should not even have a broadcasting job.

The guy is a fool !

Maybe ABC/ ESPN will take note that putting Millen on Big 10 games involving Michigan or Michigan State is not a good idea and pisses off viewers. Then again , the head of ABc/ Sports college football area Shelby ( forgot his last name ) is an idiot !

Millen and Pam Ward are the worst announcer and analysts when it comes to football ! I’d rather listen to nails on a chalkboard !

As for Theismann, just put him on Notre Dame games.

  28. tatum064 says: Apr 11, 2011 12:17 PM

Mayock is good, but they still need a better play-by-play announcer. Bob Papa isnt cutting it…maybe they can dig up Mike Patrick….but I digress. …anyone was better than Bryant Gumbel !(the original play-by-play in NFL Network’s inception)

  29. mizzousooner says: Apr 11, 2011 12:28 PM

Have any of you guys actually listened to Mayock do a game?

After he says “and bam” about 200 freaking times you may not be so enthused about him being in the booth. He’s as annoying after awhile as Maden was.

    Ugh!

  30. smarterthantheaveragebearfan says: Apr 11, 2011 12:33 PM

A permanent ban from ANY sportscast with the exception of pub darts and the Westminister Kennel Show?

  31. whatswiththehate says: Apr 11, 2011 12:36 PM

I really don’t know what Mayock is like in the both but I darn sure hope it’s not as bias and onesided as his rah-rah BIAS for Blaine Gabbert after finding out that he sign with his friend Tom Condon turned me off.

Here’s hoping he won’t show such bias favortism to certain NFL athletes while underminding and weakening the hard work and talents of others.

  32. eyefeeler says: Apr 11, 2011 12:37 PM

Mayock is the color commentator for Vikings preseason games. He uses too many cliches…”elephants on parade” for pulling guards and he falls in love with every player making a play…still will take him any day over Millen.

  33. bamasucks says: Apr 11, 2011 1:25 PM

Mike Mayock sucks. but then again, so does Theisman and Millen. i guess i’m the only person that couldn’t care less about this move.

  34. kowboydmac says: Apr 11, 2011 2:02 PM

Everyone sucks. No one can call a game. No one is satisfied.

It is pretty pathetic what some people comment on here.

Mayock is hands down the best player analysis right now.

You can claim favoritism, but that’s part of the business. People promote people.

I’d love to hear him call games.

The one person I can’t stand is Joe Buck. He just irritates me with his attitude that “Everything I say is above the standard”

  35. massappeal12345 says: Apr 11, 2011 2:19 PM

Mayock is the best. As long as he can do it along with his Notre Dame responsibilities.

Mayock knows what he’s talking about. His lisp gets a little annoying.

    ____________________________________
I’ve never heard a lisp… he simply has a MD accent. I am kinda used to the sound of that accent though because I worked w/ a lot of people from that area. I know someone who has both an MD accent AND a lisp…so I can tell.

I like Mayock as an analyst but I LOVE Charles Davis whether it’s game analysis or studio analysis. No one talks about Davis much but he’s really, really good. Davis is engaging, has a nice sense of humor that’s understated, isn’t repetitive or prone to cliches and he’s VERY knowledgeable in both the technical aspects of the game and the history. He works in his own anecdotes pretty seamlessly also. Another thing I love about Davis which is lacking in a lot of other network guys is that he can critique AND praise without going overboard into either nastiness or hagiography.

  38. osnap305 says: Apr 11, 2011 2:45 PM

Please let this happen. Millen and Theismann are so god awful.

  39. kristakay1 says: Apr 11, 2011 2:53 PM

OMG!! Please get rid of MATT MILLEN!!!! I am SO sick of that man! It’s bad enough he ran the Lions into the ground…he does some Big 10 games on Saturday’s also. Do you think anyone in Michigan wants to listen to him? Never did like him…

  40. thefiesty1 says: Apr 11, 2011 3:21 PM

Knew there was a reason I don’t get the NFL Network on Time Warner. I haven’t missed Thiesmann or Millen. This guy may be alright so get with it and come to some agreement with TW so I have more games to yell at.

  41. schmitty2 says: Apr 11, 2011 3:31 PM

Hard to find good announcers and analysts anymore. Gus Johnson makes a 3 yard run sound like a game winning td in the Super Bowl

  42. bonecity7 says: Apr 11, 2011 3:37 PM

Bring in Gus Johnson!! He can make the dullest game sound exciting!!!

  43. loytomaki says: Apr 11, 2011 3:56 PM

It is funny that Millen would have probably been the successor to Madden had he never taken the front office gig.

He has an “everyman” approach that plays well to the audience. He can be self deprecating and hsi insights are usually good. His complete failure in Detroit is going to keep his opinions from ever being taken seriously tho, and for a commentator that is a death sentence.

  44. wetpaperbag2 says: Apr 11, 2011 4:04 PM

Mike Mayock…gotta love the guy. My favorite quote from last season, “…GET OFF ME!!!” during the Seahawks/Saints playoff game.

    *********

I kinda agree with this. He does do those John Madden type things over and over. Tho, anything is better than Theismann and Millen.

  46. red513 says: Apr 11, 2011 4:57 PM

During a game last year, Papa was talking about the first down being a length of the football short, Millen says how long is that, Papa says about 11 inches. And Millen says – get this brilliant analysis – well, shouldn’t it be 12 inches long – they call it a FOOTball, right? I hit mute right after that. Bring on Mayock!

  47. rajbais says: Apr 11, 2011 5:17 PM

If this is true … yessssssssssssssssssss!!!!!!!

  48. rajbais says: Apr 11, 2011 8:19 PM

If Mayock gets put in the booth … we’ll be free from stupidity (listening to Millen & Theismann) at last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  49. umd42 says: Nov 24, 2011 8:42 PM

CKL, Mayock is from Philly not MD. No one from MD sounds like that. If there are accents like that it’s people in Baltimore who are from Philly. Watching the game now and man his accent is annoying.
