Weaver warns Jaguars fans that national media could pick on town

W. Weaver3

After making great strides in ticket sales last year, the Jaguars’ season ticket renewals are going more slowly this year.

That’s no surprise, considering the work stoppage and the still relatively bland roster in Jacksonville. Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver warned fans in a chat on Tuesday (ostensibly held to help sell tickets) that the town could be criticized by outsiders if things don’t change.

“Many see no reason to buy or renew this tickets until the labor is settled and it sends a wrong message if we don’t continue the momentum we built a year ago having the most improved attendance in the NFL,” Weaver said in a chat on Jaguars.com.

“We were number one in most new ticket sales in the NFL and number one in the most affordable ticket in the NFL. If we lose the momentum we built a year ago then the national media begins to pick up that this last year was a one year blip and Jacksonville is not a great NFL market which would we all know is not true,” Weaver said.

(I just told Florio I was writing a post about Weaver saying the national media will pick on them if they don’t sell tickets. His response: “And we will.”)

The Jaguars have extended their deadline to renew season tickets a few times.

No matter what the national media says or doesn’t say about the Jaguars, possible blackouts in 2011 is a growing concern for the team.
