Chris Johnson wants Titans to draft Cam Newton

Chris Johnson AP

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton isn’t going to make it to the eighth pick in the draft, but that hasn’t stopped Titans running back Chris Johnson from holding out hope.

Johnson wants Newton as his teammate in 2011.

“Just watching college football a little bit this year, I am a big Cam Newton fan,” Johnson told 104.5 The Zone in Nashville. “We don’t have Vince no more so I feel like another guy like Vince could come in and make plays.”

Barring an extremely unlikely April 28 trade up, Johnson won’t get his wish. But he’s got the right idea. Running backs benefit greatly from quarterbacks that also pose run threats, drawing opposing middle linebackers away as a “spy.”

With lumbering, plodding 38-year-old Kerry Collins under center in Tennessee last year, Johnson averaged a career worst 4.32 yards per carry.

So, it’s probably a safe bet that “CJ2K” hopes the Titans don’t draft Ryan Mallett.

Hey Chris, what happened to that 2,500 yard claim? You will NEVER have another good season.

Why you want Cam on board that forever mediocre team you are on? So you two can go shopping together for bling, gold teeth, and low hanging trousers?

Really dude? CJ was still 4th in the league in rushing yards last season, despite playing with Kerry Collins, an ineffective Vince Young, and some guy named Rusty all season. All they need is a marginally good QB like Matt Cassel (overrated) or Kyle Orton (underrated) to turn that offense into something effective.

If Cam Newton were even half as good as Vince Young was supposed to be, CJ would be back on top of the rushing stats.

this article has nothing to do with Ryan Mallet, or at least it shouldn’t….another opportunity to get in a dig though..

under the theory of your latest little Mallett slam, Chris Johnson wouldn’t want Peyton or Tom Bradey either (based upon their times in the 40)

As a Titans season ticket holder I would be thrilled to have the Titans pick Mallett… a pro style QB who was one of the most accurate passing college QB’s in years

But a QB who is a superio passer helps keep the defenders away from the line of scrimmage as well. If the oppo only has to wonder whether it will be Johnson or Newton running the ball, I don’t know that would help Chris a lot.

Does CJ still think he’s better than Adrian Peterson? He shouldn’t.

I see what you did there.

CJ thats pretty selfish, You want your team to draft JaMarcus Jr just so you can get more touches. I see your plan, and im calling you out!

CJ2K is his new nickname? It looks like a license plate.

I remember how many times peeps would HOWL racism when anyone dared to compare future Hall of Famer Cam Newton to Vince Young.

    Double standards are funny.

Id love to see chris johnson, devin hester, and antonio cromartie compete against each other on jeopardy.

Drafting cam Newton would be like stepping on rakes for The Titans. Oh, and a big thanks to the dimwit Britt for keeping that tried and true relationship between The Titans and the flashing blues in the rear view. Dang!

Chris needs to shut his piehole and play football, wait there isn’t going to be any football. Ok then Run your piehole…

    Cam Young
    Vince Newton
Newton Young (call him Newt for short)
    Young Newton
    Either way. Whatever.

Fantastic COLLEGE players that will FLOP in the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE. One has already proven so; the other one will follow as well.

Oh well..maybe they can go dance together in some bar with their shirts off…

I know a lot of people won’t agree with me, but Vince Young could still be a very good QB. His maturity is the concern, but what I saw from him on the field recently is good enough to start for a lot of teams. He needs a coach that will straighten him out, he’s a head case. But he is also a good quarterback and if my team needed a quarterback, he could be a good candidate.

Cam Newton could be good, too. I think it’s kind of unfair to him that so many people are rooting for him to fail, and I think he’s got the ability to be a good QB one day, certainly not immediately. A good fit for him, or actually for all of the QBs in the draft this year, would be to a team that he can sit and learn from a veteran QB for a while and eventually replace him. Seems to have worked will with Aaron Rodgers and Phillip Rivers, perhaps even Kolb. I think that’s the best strategy for a franchise to sustain success. So if Tennessee somehow gets Cam Newton, it might be wise to keep him on the bench for a while

I’d Rather have a box of Fig Newtons instead of Cam Newton!!!

“We don’t have Vince no more so I feel like another guy like Vince could come in and make plays.”

Yea, that makes sense Chris. You should get a guy like the guy you just released and then the team will be fine.

When will teams learn that a QB whose primary skill set is mobility and not throwing the ball will never win a Superbowl? Is that ever going to happen?

    Wow…you are truly an idiot.

Why are you worrying about another man’s shopping habits or style of dress…? CJ2K hasn’t even even been in the league for 5 seasons yet and he’s already had some of the best numbers of all time.

He wants a playmaker so that defenses can stop focusing all their efforts on him. I don’t know if that’s Cam Newton…but it’s better than what they hace currently.
