Chris Johnson wants Titans to draft Cam Newton

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton isn’t going to make it to the eighth pick in the draft, but that hasn’t stopped Titans running back Chris Johnson from holding out hope.

Johnson wants Newton as his teammate in 2011.

“Just watching college football a little bit this year, I am a big Cam Newton fan,” Johnson told 104.5 The Zone in Nashville. “We don’t have Vince no more so I feel like another guy like Vince could come in and make plays.”

Barring an extremely unlikely April 28 trade up, Johnson won’t get his wish. But he’s got the right idea. Running backs benefit greatly from quarterbacks that also pose run threats, drawing opposing middle linebackers away as a “spy.”

With lumbering, plodding 38-year-old Kerry Collins under center in Tennessee last year, Johnson averaged a career worst 4.32 yards per carry.

So, it’s probably a safe bet that “CJ2K” hopes the Titans don’t draft Ryan Mallett.
